Edition No163 | 19-06-2025 - Iran and Israel launch more attacks, and sources suggest Trump is weighing the final decision about US involvement. Earlier, Trump said "I may do it, I may not do it." Classic ambiguity and chaotic political theater from Trump, but he has a real dilemma here, and advisors within MAGA are split on the approach. Go the slogan of ‘no more wars’ or pursue an aggressive Middle East foreign policy. According to various sources, Trump approved plans to attack Iran but has not made a final decision on whether to launch strikes. That decision may not rest on the strategic implications or morality of the question, but simply what the chance of success is. Trump may not want to be associated with a failure, or a fiasco. The decision could simply rest on tactical outcomes. The Iranians will not "grovel at the gates of the White House," but are thought to be keen to deescalate without losing face and are also keen for the US to stay out of the action. So far, the US has not asked to use UK bases in Cyprus or Diego Garcia for possible strikes, and Trump may also have been informed that the US need more military assets in the region to prepare for the consequences of strikes. That could take several days to move platforms and assets into the region, giving Trump yet more space for ambiguous hints and to delay taking a decision. Edition No162 | 18-06-2025 - Russia is not just a malignant adversary of the West, an aggressive actor on the world stage, full of animosity and venom. We are not just dealing with a state that has delusions of imperial and even superpower grandeur. We are dealing with a country that collectively acts in a stupid manner, frequently against its own national interests. Russia has been described as a failed state, and there is a compelling case to make that there has been significant and steep decline in the quality of governance from Tsarist times to the USSR to the present. But I’d go further, Russia is in a state in a state of precipitous civilisational decline, as well as imperial collapse, but the challenge is, that as this speeds up, Russia is more prone to project aggression on its neighbours and the world, and more insistent on projecting its pale imitation of civilisation on others. As if somehow inflicting their political and social culture on others can bring it back from the bring of extinction. But as a result, everything the regime touches is either destroyed, or turned into an inauthentic and inorganic zombie version of itself. Nowhere is this clearer than in the Forum of the Future conference that has just been held in Moscow. Economically, Russia is a weakling compared to its geographic and population size. With a combined GDP of approximately $17.18 trillion, the EU far outstrips Russia's $1.78 trillion. The bloc also races ahead of Russia in the high-tech components of its economy. But where it makes up for this weakness and disproportion in relation to its adversaries, is how loud it is prepared to shout, how aggressive it is prepared to be, and how brazenly it is prepared to lie. In that sense, the Russian Forum of the Future was the Olympic Games of vacuous self-promotion, lies and distortions. Edition No161 | 17-06-2025 - Trump has fled the G7, where it seems like his only significant contribution was to whine about how unfair it was that his fiend Vald has been kicked out of the club. He then repeated a total fantasy story, about how it was Justin Trudeau’s fault Russia was kicked out and that Putin would never have gone to war if 1) he had been president and 2) Trudeau and pals had not been so mean to Putin. The reality of course, is that Russia was ejected from the G8 precisely because it started a war in Crimea and then Donbas in 2014, and Justin Trudeau would not become premier of Canada until 2015. The most shocking thing perhaps, was not that Trump would lies and spin fantasies so readily, but that no leader was prepared to confront those falsehoods and blatant lies publicly. Nothing must spoil the photo ops. So, the endless photo opportunities the event created for world leaders, look like it’ll amount to little more than that. No decisions were reached. No joint communiques were issued. No press releases agreed upon or published. And Trump departs the day before he was supposed to meet Zelenskyy – an encounter and conversation that likely will not happen. If it was Trump’s intention to turn the G7 into a hollow facade, a kind of zombie institution, then there is little more he could have done to achieve this. If we are conspiratorially minded, degrading and eliminating another fixture of international cooperation was top of Putin’s wish list. Perhaps trying to force the pace of events, Israel continues its aerial attacks on the Islamic Republic. In an indication of who may suffer most if the regime falls, the regime enforcer is apparently in negotiations with Kremlin officials over securing asylum in Russia.Israel sees Iran's nuclear capabilities as an existential threat to its existence – this much is clear from the attacks that began last Friday. But why now, and why such a comprehensive series of attacks, not merely symbolic, but at scale and designed to severely degrade Tehran’s ability to wage war in all its forms.
