April's gonna April, with a couple of forgettable action flicks we're mixed on as we wait for the summer blockbusters to arrive. We begin with "The Accountant 2," which is the sequel to "The Accountant," and if you forgot that 2016 movie even existed, you're not alone. Ben Affleck is back as a math whiz with a particular set of skills. Jon Bernthal co-stars. In theaters. Then, we catch up with "Drop," which several people asked us to review. It's another twisty, high-concept thriller from "Happy Death Day" director Christopher Landon. Meghann Fahy ("The White Lotus" S2) goes on a first date and starts getting menacing messages on her phone. In theaters. Bowen Yang, Lily Gladstone and Kelly Marie Tran are among the cast in this romantic comedy about queer couples juggling love and cultural traditions. In theaters. And then, we wanted to include the audio from our "Secret Mall Apartment" review from a couple weeks back. This thoroughly entertaining documentary follows a group of artists who found a hidden spot in the middle of the Providence Place Mall and called it home for several years in the early 2000s. We couldn't have imagined a more random episode to leave you with before spring break, but hopefully there's a little something for everyone here at Breakfast All Day. We begin with "The Friend," a warm and wise drama about grief, healing, and a 150-pound Great Dane. We don't totally agree on how well this movie works, but the dog is amazing. Starring Naomi Watts, Bill Murray, Carla Gugino and Ann Dowd. In theaters. Next up is the four-part anthology "Freaky Tales," from "Captain Marvel" filmmakers Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck, returning to their indie roots. Pedro Pascal, Ben Mendelsohn, Jay Ellis, Dominique Thorne and Too $hort are among the stars of this intertwined homage to 1987 Oakland. In theaters. Finally, we catch up with "Holland," but you're welcome to avoid it. Nicole Kidman, Matthew Macfadyen and Gael García Bernal star in this overly familiar dark comedy about secrets lurking beneath the pristine veneer of small-town America. Streaming on Prime Video. Totally by coincidence, both of our movies this week are about characters who are stuck inside. But we hope you're getting out and about and enjoying the springtime, and that you'll take us with you here at Breakfast All Day. We begin with a review of "The Woman in the Yard," which Universal didn't screen for critics before opening day. The latest Blumhouse horror movie stars the always great Danielle Deadwyler as a widow and mother of two, dealing with a mysterious and menacing ... woman in the yard. In theaters. We also catch up with "Locked," which came out last weekend. Bill Skarsgård finds himself trapped in a fancy SUV when he picks the wrong car to steal from a Vancouver parking lot. Anthony Hopkins is the voice of the car owner who torments him remotely. Also in theaters. And we finally did Movie News LIVE! for the first time in about three weeks. Things have been a little crazy around here. Among the topics we talked about were "No Other Land" director Hamdan Ballal, Sundance leaving Park City, Rachel Zegler, "Avengers: Doomsday" and more. A little birdie told us you were looking for a new episode of our Breakfast All Day podcast, so we whipped one up for you (and whistled a happy tune while we did it). We have a full slate of reviews for you this time. "Snow White" is the big movie of the week: the latest live-action reimagining of a Disney animation classic. Rachel Zegler stars as the O.G. princess, with Gal Gadot playing the Evil Queen. Lots of people are mad at this movie for a variety of ridiculous reasons. If you decide to see it for yourself, let us know what you think. It's in theaters. Also opening this week, finally, is "Magazine Dreams." This is the film that was supposed to cement Jonathan Majors' status as a major talent of our time -- then he was arrested and convicted of assault and harassment. He gives an incredible performance in a film filled with craft, if you can separate the art from the artist, and we don't blame you if you can't. It's tough. In theaters. We also catch up with the indie baseball movie "Eephus," which is a delightfully shaggy hang. Carson Lund fills the screen with eccentric characters and a rich sense of place, inspired by his baseball-obsessed youth in Nashua, NH. We both loved this movie. Director Barry Levinson goes through the motions in trotting out mob tropes. It's also in theaters, but you can miss this one. It's a Pi Day miracle: We recorded these reviews in the same place at the same time for the first time in a long time. Five years, to be exact. And it was so nice to be together again at Alonso's apartment on this rainy day in LA. We begin with "The Electric State," an empty, ugly, $320 million action extravaganza from longtime MCU directors Anthony and Joe Russo. It's a retro-futuristic, post-apocalyptic story set in the '90s, after humans and robots have gone to war. The ridiculous cast includes Millie Bobby Brown, Chris Pratt, Stanley Tucci, Anthony Mackie, Brian Cox, Jenny Slate, Ke Huy Quan and Woody Harrelson as Mr. Peanut. Yes, you read that right. Streaming now on Netflix. We were also disappointed with "Opus," about a legendary pop star who invites a group of journalists to his remote retreat to listen to his first album in three decades. It's an A24 horror movie, and it feels awfully familiar. It also features an impressive cast including Ayo Edebiri, John Malkovich, Murray Bartlett, Juliette Lewis and Amber Midthunder. This Friday is so jam-packed with new movies that we wanted to review a couple of them early for you here at Breakfast All Day. We begin with the action comedy "Novocaine," starring Jack Quaid as a mild-mannered bank manager who feels no pain. When robbers kidnap the woman he adores (Amber Midthunder), he finds his affliction is actually an asset. One of us liked this movie better than the other. But we both loved "Black Bag," starring Michael Fassbender and Cate Blanchett as British spies who love each other but don't totally trust each other. This is the second film this year from director Steven Soderbergh and writer David Koepp, following "Presence" in January. It's sleek, sexy and stylish. This is a spoiler-free review. If you thought one Robert Pattinson was good, wait 'til you see two of them in "Mickey 17." We couldn't wait to review the latest sci-fi/satire extravaganza from the great South Korean auteur Bong Joon Ho, his first film since the historic Oscar wins of his 2019 masterpiece, "Parasite." But while we both enjoyed Pattinson's dual performances, we're split on how effective "Mickey 17" is as a whole. Co-starring Steven Yeun, Naomi Ackie, Mark Ruffalo and Toni Collette. In theaters now. Oscar Night was so much fun that we couldn't wait to wake up and talk about everything that happened. "Anora" was the big winner of the night with five Academy Awards, and Sean Baker made history for winning four of them for the same film: best picture, director, screenplay and editing. Plus Mikey Madison was (sort of) the surprise winner in the best actress category for her star-making turn in the title role. A quick, mixed bag, and it's coming at you on a Thursday for a change, in our latest episode of Breakfast All Day. We begin with a tribute to Gene Hackman, the legendary actor who was discovered dead in his Santa Fe, N.M., home this week. The two-time Oscar winner was 95 years old. His wife and one of his dogs had died, as well, and authorities are investigating. But we wanted to remember his long and varied career, and we'll honor Hackman further with our March Off the Menu poll, so keep an eye out for that. Also, we catch up with "Grand Theft Hamlet," a totally original documentary about a couple of actors who staged a production of "Hamlet" entirely within the video game Grand Theft Auto Online.
