#151: Elliot Page, COVID resets, Wedgie shorts
It’s a big week for trans awareness, with actor Elliot Page coming out and highlighting the realities of many others in the trans community. A great piece in the Washington Post on how COVID has changed arts criticism has us thinking more broadly about the ways we’re shifting for good, including in live gig accessibility. It’s quite a time for butts in fashion too, and of course we have many thoughts. Cher has rescued an elephant, and another monolith has popped up; Myf has the breaking news on both. And we’re banging on about a brilliant new podcast, and an award winning Australian novel.Show notes:Elliot Page comes out: https://www.instagram.com/p/CIQ1QFBhNFg/Arts Criticism may never be the same: https://www.washingtonpost.com/entertainment/museums/museums-art-criticism-covid-transformed/2020/11/25/a5623b9e-290d-11eb-8fa2-06e7cbb145c0_story.htmlLive music more accessible: https://www.abc.net.au/triplej/programs/hack/live-music-more-accessible-for-people-with-disabilities/12944018Wedgie shorts: https://au.sports.yahoo.com/wedgie-trend-butt-crack-cleavage-fashion-nova-000054293.htmlButt masks: https://aceology.co/products/cheeky-butt-mask-trioCher saved an elephant: https://edition.cnn.com/videos/travel/2020/11/29/cher-elephant-rescue-kaavan-pakistan-travel-orig-ch.cnnMonolith watch: https://www.ladbible.com/news/news-mysterious-monolith-similar-to-one-found-in-utah-appears-in-romania-20201130Stuff The British Stole: https://www.abc.net.au/radionational/programs/stuff-the-british-stole/The Yield: https://www.penguin.com.au/books/yield-the-9780143785750Email us to Bang Back: bangon.podcast@abc.net.auBang On is produced by Double J and is recorded on the lands of the Wurundjeri people of the Kulin nation. #150: Music Awards, Meghan Markle, Toast
It’s been a big week for music statues, with the ARIA Awards going down, and the Grammy nominations going up. Diversity on both fronts is on the rise, but The Weeknd ain’t happy. A great read on a new generation’s viewing of Diana’s “princess story” has us also reflecting on the shifting stories around cultural institutions, while an op-ed penned by The Duchess of Sussex shows she continues to do things her way. It’s our 150th episode too, so a good chance to introduce a new segment: Things We Don’t Understand. And Myf is pumped about a new US spin off series of Toast of London, while Zan is shoulder dancing in her seat to the new concert film American Utopia.Show notes:Sampa the Great performs at the ARIAs: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y4buIYNL01U&feature=youtu.be&ab_channel=ARIAGrammy nominations: https://variety.com/2020/music/news/grammys-women-country-rock-categories-genres-1234839286/The Weeknd accuses the Grammys of being corrupt: https://edition.cnn.com/2020/11/25/entertainment/the-weeknd-grammys-trnd/index.htmlYoung Women Are Watching Diana’s Story in the Crown with Horror: https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2020/nov/24/young-women-the-crown-dianaThe Losses We Share: https://www.nytimes.com/2020/11/25/opinion/meghan-markle-miscarriage.htmlPeriod Poverty: https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-scotland-scotland-politics-51629880Mystery Monolith: https://www.abc.net.au/news/2020-11-25/mysterious-shiny-monolith-found-in-otherworldly-utah-desert/12917946Johnny Rotten: https://junkee.com/johnny-rotten-flea-penis/279668American Utopia: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lg4hcgtjDPc&ab_channel=HBOToast to America: https://www.vulture.com/2020/11/matt-berry-steven-toast-new-season-america.htmlEmail us to Bang Back: bangon.podcast@abc.net.auBang On is produced by Double J. #149: Dolly's Vaccine, The Crown, Pete Evans
Dolly Parton cured Coronavirus! ABC Fact Check: not quite, but how wonderful that her $1 million donation towards the development of a vaccine is reaping dividends; we celebrate the Queen. Speaking of monarchies, the new season of The Crown has dropped and everyone is googling whether or not Diana dressed as a tree. But has artistic licence been taken too far? The success of double screen friendly shows like Emily in Paris has us looking into the concept of “ambient tv”, while we’re grateful that Channel 10 has decided to keep Pete Evans OFF the box. And we’re celebrating big boned parrots, and banging on about pools. Yep, it’s November.Show notes:Dolly Parton's vaccine donation: https://www.sbs.com.au/news/dolly-parton-donated-1-million-to-support-the-development-of-moderna-s-coronavirus-vaccineThe Crown’s fake history: https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2020/nov/16/the-crown-fake-history-news-tv-series-royal-family-artistic-licenceEmily in Paris and the rise of ambient tv: https://www.newyorker.com/culture/cultural-comment/emily-in-paris-and-the-rise-of-ambient-tvPete Evans: https://tvblackbox.com.au/page/2020/11/17/exclusive-pete-evans-fired-from-im-a-celebrity-get-me-out-of-here/All hail the Kakapo: https://www.theguardian.com/world/2020/nov/16/kakapo-the-worlds-fattest-parrot-named-new-zealands-bird-of-the-year-for-2020Where the Crawdads Sing: https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/36809135-where-the-crawdads-singEmail us: bangon.podcast@abc.net.auBang On is recorded on the lands of the Wurundjeri people of the Kulin nation. #148: Manterrupting, Indigenous place names, Four Seasons
It’s been a week for finding, and figuring out women’s place in power in 2020. An ABC 4 Corners expose on the power imbalance between men and women in Canberra has been seamlessly followed by a political press conference confirming the point. Meanwhile a statue erected to pay tribute to a feminist hero has many confused and outraged about the gaze it was sculpted in. Australia Post has backed a campaign to include Indigenous place names on letters and packages, which has us reflecting on the every day inclusion of traditional country names in all walks of life. And the Four Seasons Total Landscaping story is too good to ignore. Yes, we’ve ordered the commemorative tee. #146: Kim’s Birthday, Fashion at 40, Seduced
After 2 weeks of multiple health screens and asking everyone to quarantine, I surprised my closest inner circle with a trip to a private island where we could pretend things were normal just for a brief moment in time. Joking! We just emerged from months of lockdown to record Bang On face to face, IRL! And it’s like one million private island birthdays rolled into one. We talk about the tone deaf socials post from KKW that has the world’s meme machine ticking over. Bowie's iconic song Fashion turns 40 and the sale of iconic venue Festival Hall has us reminiscing about the live music memories that shaped who we would become, and what the future holds for those gigs (under God’s eye). Myf makes Zan’s day by banging on about a new TV series on cults, while Zan’s been watching the Borat sequel.Show notes:The Bunnings Guy: https://junkee.com/bunnings-theme-gruen/276084Kim’s private island birthday: https://www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/2020/oct/28/kim-kardashian-west-tweets-birthday-party-private-islandFestival Hall sold: https://www.abc.net.au/triplej/news/musicnews/hillsong-has-bought-melbournes-iconic-festival-hall/12813314David Bowie’s Fashion at 40: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JUMvk_AScjk&ab_channel=LowiePerezFyre Festival’s Billy McFarland put in solitary for a podcast: https://www.vulture.com/2020/10/fyre-festivals-billy-mcfarland-put-in-solitary-over-podcast.htmlSeduced: Inside the NXIVM Cult: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0K-dAFACofI&ab_channel=StanAustraliaBorat Subsequent Moviefilm: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0Rsa4U8mqkwEmail us: bangon.podcast@abc.net.auBang On is recorded on the lands of the Wurundjeri people of the Kulin nation. #145: Giuliani & Borat, Friendship, Honeybee
It’s been a week for blokes with their hands down their pants! Rudy Giuliani has been caught in some compromising shots in the new Borat film, while US journalist Jeremy Toobin has dissolved the boundaries of working from home, in a Zoom meeting. Why are so many men coming to his defence? A beautiful long read on how we value our friendships has us reflecting on our own lifelong bonds, and NASA has landed on an asteroid this week. Cue: Aerosmith. Meanwhile Zan has just finished Craig Silvey’s new book Honeybee, while Myf is shock watching Norwegian drama series Exit on SBS.Show notes:Rudy Giuliani and Borat: https://www.theguardian.com/film/2020/oct/21/rudy-giuliani-faces-questions-after-compromising-scene-in-new-borat-filmJeffrey Toobin: https://www.rollingstone.com/culture/culture-features/jeffrey-toobin-zoom-dick-incident-defense-1078166/What if Friendship, Not Marriage, Was at the Center of Life: https://www.theatlantic.com/family/archive/2020/10/people-who-prioritize-friendship-over-romance/616779/How Will We Tackle the Pandemic of Loneliness After Covid: https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2020/oct/16/how-will-we-tackle-the-pandemic-of-loneliness-after-covidNASA: https://www.nasa.gov/press-release/nasa-s-osiris-rex-spacecraft-successfully-touches-asteroidHoneybee: https://www.theguardian.com/books/2020/sep/25/honeybee-by-craig-silvey-review-a-tender-but-uncomfortable-coming-of-age-storyExit: https://www.sbs.com.au/ondemand/program/exitEmail us: bangon.podcast@abc.net.auBang On is recorded on the lands of the Wurundjeri people of the Kulin nation. #144: The Crown, Rihanna, Billie Eilish and Zadie Smith
The trailer for season 4 of The Crown is out and we are absolutely frothing for it. A new Crocs x Bieber collab has the internet ablaze again, and while younger folks have been behind the plastic clog for a while now, it feels as though the multi-generational tipping point is here. Meanwhile Rihanna has drawn attention to male body image with her brilliant inclusion of 2XL model Steven G in her latest undies campaign, while Billie Eilish’s appearance is being dissected once again (she’s having none of it). Scat talk makes a welcome appearance (for Zan) with news of an updated toilet for women in space, only 50 odd years since space flight began. And Stevie Nicks has jumped on board the TikTok meme train, but at what price? Meanwhile Myf has been digging into a Zadie Smith audiobook very much for the times, while Zan is banging on about the 4 Corners & Hack investigation into Tinder. #143: Claudia Conway, Fleetwood Mac, David Attenborough
It’s been a big week in American politics and frankly, we gotta dive in. Love overtakes #ProudBoys, while a fifteen year old on TikTok becomes the voice of honesty out of the White House. An Idaho fella with a penchant for cranberry juice wins everyone over, including Mick Fleetwood. And Myf is binge watching Issa Rae's TV show Insecure, and hate-watching Emily in Paris. Meanwhile Zan discovers Myf has never seen an Attenborough nature doco, when she bangs on about his latest, "A Life On Our Planet". #142: Helen Reddy, Lizzo, Michaela & Donald
The death of a feminist icon has us reflecting on the power of song, and the impact her anthem had on the highest office in the land. Lizzo has made history on the cover of Vogue, and there’s a lot of feedback. We're also in awe of an incredible conversation between Michaela Coel and Donald Glover. In between we talk about puppet haute couture and a famous wood nymph celebrates her birthday in an eye opening way.
