22. Teach elements of your methodologies

As I mentioned yesterday in Tip#21, as someone who is looking to build your thought leadership - be mindful of the tactics you follow as you continue to build your reputation as a trusted authority.  It matters.Rather than following the same ol ‘hack this’ and ‘hack that’ visibility tactics - focus on the insights, hindsight, and foresight that only YOU can bring to the conversation through your years of experience and knowledge. Because it’s the wisdom and knowledge YOU bring through longevity in your industry that matters!Showcase THAT as you build your thought leadership collateral.Another way to do that is to: Teach elements of your methodologies  The steps you have come up with and now take your clients through to get them from where they are stuck to where they are achieving their goals? Take elements of your methodologies –and teach them.  If you’re following me on Linkedin, check out some of my featured posts where you will see documents and infographics where I teach elements of my methodologies. From the tactic I accidently stumbled across and now teach all of my clients on how they need to set up their podcast so they can begin to nurture listeners into leads, enquiries and ultimately paying clients from their very first episode.  My tips on how to create a unique and uncopyable podcast Listener Experience to build an engaged audience and how to check you have everything in the place to do that – right through to Podcasting Principles and Personal Branding Principles for Coaches and Consultants. I’ve also shared this information on my podcasts and in articles. 21. Do the Opposite

As I mentioned yesterday in Tip#20, as someone who is looking to build your thought leadership - be mindful of the tactics you follow as you continue to build your reputation as a trusted authority.  It matters. Rather than following the same ol ‘hack this’ and ‘hack that’ visibility tactics - focus on the insights, hindsight, and foresight that only YOU can bring to the conversation through your years of experience and knowledge. Because it’s the wisdom and knowledge YOU bring through longevity in your industry that matters! Showcase THAT as you build your thought leadership collateral. Another way to do that is to: Do the opposite. I’m sure you’ve heard the saying “When everyone zigs – zag.” As a Change Maker, you probably already know that you don’t follow trends – you lead trends. Or, you look out for certain patterns in order to identify unique and different ways of doing things. Because being “one of the pack” – just isn’t your style.  So, when it comes to your industry – what moves have you made that were different from what everyone else has done, and how has it improved your results and now of course the results of your clients?Or, what CAN you do in order to zig when everyone else is zagging? The other day I made a comment about a specific platform and how I had decided NOT to incorporate that platform into my strategy. Someone responded, “All of your competitors are on that platform – so you should be too?” To which I responded, that’s one of the reasons why I don’t and I won’t. I know who my ideal client is and she is probably not hanging out on that platform, because she’s on a mission to change the world, and that particular platform is a distraction. Another example of zigging when everyone else is zagging came about when one of my colleagues who is a printer mentioned how printed marketing and relationship-building collateral is not as prolific as it was years ago. Everyone is online. So, imagine if you incorporated a strategy that did involve something unique and uncopyable that was sent to someone’s physical mailing address. That would certainly stand out considering printed matter has dropped off substantially. It would certainly stand out and is just another example of how to do the opposite of what everyone else in your industry is doing. Now it’s your turn. What have you done that was the opposite of what everyone else in your industry was doing? 20. Challenge The Status Quo

As I mentioned yesterday in Tip#19, as someone who is looking to build your thought leadership - be mindful of the tactics you follow as you continue to build your reputation as a trusted authority.  It matters.Rather than following the same old ‘hack this’ and ‘hack that’ visibility tactics - focus on the insights, hindsight, and foresight that only YOU can bring to the conversation through your years of experience and knowledge. Because it’s the wisdom and knowledge YOU bring through longevity in your industry that matters!Showcase THAT as you build your thought leadership collateral.Another way to do that is to: Challenge the status quo Status quo really just means the current state of affairs. How many businesses or even industries are happy doing what they’ve been doing for many years. That old saying ‘If it’s not broke – then why fix it.’ However, something may not be broken, however, could certainly do with a tweak or improvement. Perhaps you’ve been able to come up with a new approach that is challenging the status quo of your industry – share it with your ideal clients and tell them why this new (or changed) approach is so important. For instance, for me, an example of challenging the status quo – when I was in the career industry – quite a number of my colleagues and the industry in fact here in Australia were saying how important it was to have face-to-face meetings with clients. You couldn’t have coaching sessions over the phone or via email? [Skype wasn’t even invented back then] However, I couldn’t see why that wasn’t possible. I had colleagues in the US who were. So, I hired a coach in the USA and the rest is history as they say. I began working with clients not only across Australia via phone and email, but also across the USA and other countries too.  I started using audio recordings as part of my work with clients in 2005 and eventually began my first co-hosted podcast in 2008 – when people for years would say ‘what’s a podcast?” “Why bother – no one really listens to podcasts?” I wonder what they’d say now. Now it’s your turn. What status quo have you challenged when it comes to your industry? 19. Expose the elephant in the room

As I mentioned yesterday in Tip#18, as someone who is looking to build your thought leadership - be mindful of the tactics you follow as you continue to build your reputation as a trusted authority.  It matters.Rather than following the same ol ‘hack this’ and ‘hack that’ visibility tactics - focus on the insights, hindsight, and foresight that only YOU can bring to the conversation through your years of experience and knowledge. Because it’s the wisdom and knowledge YOU bring through longevity in your industry that matters! Showcase THAT as you build your thought leadership collateral.Another way to do that is to: Expose the elephant in the room. What is a mistruth or a mistake that your ideal client is not aware of and perhaps is something other providers in your industry are still teaching? Address it and share what your ideal clients should be doing instead.  One of the elephants in the room for me when it comes to helping businesses start their podcast – is the fixation on the number of downloads their podcast is getting. I’m sure you’ve heard the term Vanity Numbers – where people get caught up in the number of likes and shares and comments, and when it comes to podcasting the number of downloads.  So, instead of focusing on Vanity Numbers – I encourage people to focus on and build Reputation Equity – because Reputation Equity is bankable, whereas Vanity numbers are not. What do I mean when I say Reputation Equity is bankable – well this entire 30DaysToDistinction Challenge covers important insights and tips on how to build your reputation as that trusted authority. And, when you’ve got a reputation for bringing valuable insights and a reputation of delivering results – people hire you. It was building Reputation Equity with my podcast – Ambitious Entrepreneur Show that saw several people message me and ask if I would consider selling my podcast after I announced I was stopping production. That’s the Reputation I had built over the years for that podcast and compelled people to reach out and enquire. 18. Address the BS

Firstly, as someone who is looking to build your thought leadership - be mindful of the tactics you follow as you continue to build your reputation as a trusted authority.  It matters.Rather than following the same ol ‘hack this’ and ‘hack that’ visibility tactics - focus on the insights, hindsight, and foresight that only YOU can bring to the conversation through your years of experience and knowledge.Because it’s the wisdom and knowledge YOU bring through longevity in your industry that matters!Showcase THAT as you build your thought leadership collateral.One way to do that is to Address the BS in your industry.  To get your creative juices flowing:  What’s no longer true, or completely irrelevant for your ideal client, yet other providers in your industry are saying how important it is?  Yet, you know it’s only going to confuse and keep people stuck if they follow that ill advice? Address it and share what they should be doing instead. YOUR NEXT STEP:  Are you a coach or consultant who is struggling to stand out online?
