017: Drew Wallace aka The Ranger Cowboy
Talk Back to MeAfter a series of deployments and time spent in Ranger Battalion, Drew Wallace started down the path of a style of shooting many of us are familiar with from movies, myths, and legends, one combining the skills of horsemanship and marksmanship into a fast-paced heritage and sport. Described as a Western Speed Equestrian Sport, Drew Wallace Competes in Cowboy Man and Shooting, and we cover the history of the style, how it translates to the type of shooting familiar to Ranger Battalion, and how he got started. While we are actively seeing modern Gun Culture expand into activities like overlanding, the style of shooting that Drew Wallace participates paints the Marksman as something built into the history of Americana. A window into how what was once old is new again, the concept of an Armed Populace may have gone through a season of shadow, but is hopefully returning to the norm. 016: Alex Aubrey of Flux Defense and Tumi Tactics
Talk Back to MeWhen the Flux Defense Raider first caught our collective attention, it looked like the fusion of two worlds: the allure of a secretive mission combined with that kind of practicality which harkens to the everyman. In this episode we cover what it was like bringing the concept to life, social media shenanigans, community building, and where gaming meets gun culture. 015: An Moral Argument for an Armed Society
Talk Back to MeThe American Debate on Gun Control regularly breaks apart when a utilitarian argument meets a rights-based one. The problem with how we think about violence, is that we too often resort to using it as a method of enforcement, instead of an action that is judged based on the context. The idea that an armed society is a polite society may have allure, but ultimately falls short of establishing a moral requirement, and instead opens the grounds for an ends-justify-the-means conclusion. So we engage with an argument which attempts to show that in order for a society to be moral at all, it must not have a government infringing on that right, and the exercise of the right to bear arms is part of agency being a necessary option to begin with. 014: Isaac Botkin of T.Rex Arms on Foundations of 2A and the Enlightenment
Talk Back to MeIt's not enough to use the Second Amendment as merely a legal defense against tyranny. Just as the paper itself does not establish a Human Right, neither does the institution that honors it. But these concepts did not arrive out of the void. Rather the ideas that culminated in the Second Amendment took centuries to crystalize into a codification intending to restrict governments from infringing on the rights of the people. Politicians, movements, and ideologies can all be guilty of simplifying history into a specific narrative: the Enlightenment was a battle between science and religion, the American war for Independence was between good Colonials and bad Red Coats, and history is only written by the victor. While these generalizations can feel helpful at times, if we are to learn from history, we must first understand it, and in order to do so, we must consider how we gather information on the subject. In addition to producing gear for the culture, T.Rex arms also dedicates time to participate in culture building. Isaac Botkin joins the show to discuss what had to come to pass before we were able to produce a document with the express purpose of defending the right to bear arms. 013: Alex Vallorosi aka Mojave Repeater on Modern Radios and How to Use Them
Talk Back to MeCommunications may get a bad rapport in Universities, but when it comes to communities and conflict, it bears the same weight as logistics. Gun Culture has long held a symbiotic interest with Radios, radio tech, and the legalities surrounding them. Mojave Repeater knows more than a thing or two about both radios and communicating through them, and helps guide us through the murky environment that is what they are capable of, as well as what to look out for to stay on the good side of the law.You could say that Mojave Repeater runs a commo shop, which means one thing to military and veterans, and a whole different concept to those engaged in the public market. His experience and expertise covers both the equipment, and how to use it, and more importantly, how to make it work for you instead of you spending your time trying to justify the capability. 012: Philosophy of Violence Foundations
Talk Back to MeThe subject of violence is inherently bound to both metaphysical presumptions and ethical evaluations. Due to the immense moral consequence of acts of violence, how we evaluate an action to be violence and how that action is evaluated carry heavy weight. So, how we think about it must be considered with grave seriousness. In this episode, we start dissecting the concept of violence into its parts: metaphysics, ethics, and epistemology, as well as consider how logic plays a role. 011: Dustin Sanchez from Action Gunner, REAL AVID, and more
Talk Back to MeFor years we've seen the similarities between the culture around firearms to those around photography, cars, and more. If you've ever seen a reel or watched a modern video of someone shooting competition, you've likely seen something influenced by his work. And there's more to competition shooting than simply the stage plan. Rather, a whole ecosystem around the sport and its various disciplines. We dig into how competition builds more than skillsets, where we've seen good changes come about in the culture, and where we think things are going. 010: Peter Johnson of Archway Defense on [CABIN IN THE WOODS] and Privacy.
Talk Back to MeCo-Conspirator in the making of [CABIN IN THE WOODS], Peter Johnson of Archway Defense joins the REDACTED Culture Cast to discuss privacy, digital and physical, as well as illuminate how we apply the responsibilities attached to rights to our daily lives. One trouble with cyber security presents is how difficult it can be to set goals. The ideal of being a digital ghost may sound like an ideal to strive for, but much more often we're looking for vulnerabilities and fixing them. While Archway Defense specializes in training tailored to the customer's needs, Peter's concern about digital, and now social security adds context to an already murky subject. 009: Friday Solo // 3 Types of Training
Talk Back to MeThis week comes in response to a series of questions regarding maintaining training in a busy schedule, and for those who may not have access to nearby instructors. As the Overton Window continues to shift towards a proliferation of training, and although we may not see a golden age of training, the responsibility ultimately falls on the shoulders of the individual to be proficient, and ask "what for" with humility and courage. Three categories of skill development to focus on: Habitual, Guided, and Exploratory help us think about not only what we are training for, but how we train at all. 008: Beau Doboszenski of Defensive Mindset Training on Surviving 9/11 and Training Better
Talk Back to MeOver ten years of training and curriculum development has allowed Beau to cover both sides of the Is-Ought Divide when it comes to self defense. One part Neurology, another part Philosophy, the story started over 20 years ago. On the ground at the Pentagon on September 11th, 2001 can sound like the start of an origin story, so we discuss not only what happened and what was learned, but why so many are in search of some single event to define themselves, instead of the larger picture. Defensive Mindset Training teaches in-person courses, as well as it's web-based instruction and daily guided practice to supplement one's skillset development. Take advantage of in-person instruction with a cleaner skillset.
