The Fire Itself: Sean of Phinehas & the Gamer Generation

It used to be that you could tell the reaction to an album by things like first week sales or reviews in major publications, but in 2021 it's a lot different. You can still feel the energy around an important release like this one, but the buzz comes from places like “reaction videos” from prominent YouTubers and other new media. It's a little bit of a different landscape, but there is still just an air about some records that indicates something special, some type of credibility, and The Fire Itself definitely seems to be one of those records. Sean from Phinehas has a sharp and unique mind that comes from what could be called the gamer generation or a millennial, but he shares qualities with emerging and younger generations in a way that is relevant to his approach to art, creativity, and engineering. Sean & I talk about his background and how he was and still is a gamer and how that has helped him with networking & forming relationships. We also talk about how music has evolved and how people consume it evolved, especially around the time of MySpace and digital music. Of course, we extensively discuss The Fire Itself album that is getting a tremendous amount of attention, the song-writing process and how Sean’s list-writing becomes songs. Josh Kemble - The Dogwood Way

Josh Kemble is someone who instantly strikes me as having two of my favorite qualities, mindfulness and authenticity. Combined, they give the experience of being present in a conversation while able to tie in multiple layers of meaning. It's almost as if Josh is aware of the experience he is creating in others, and that's key in crafting music or art that is going to connect with people. From the stories I've heard over the year and the way they are discussed, and from a few conversations I've had with Josh, it's obvious that Dogwood was a very self- aware and principled band whose micro-culture navigated the emergence of the San Diego pop punk scene of the late 90’s, and then was able to become part of the canon of important artists in our scene. Matt Pryor of The Get Up Kids: Pioneer in a Parallel Universe

In 1995, The Get Up Kids began exploring their surroundings and expanding their horizons in much the way that early Tooth & Nail and Solid State artists did. In the midwest emo scene, they were sharing the stages with bands of seemingly all genres, while making friends in many other states. They didn’t ask permission for what they did, and no one stopped them from blazing new pathways that would connect the regional underground scenes together and really open up the all-ages movement.  Matt Pryor, TGUK frontman, currently hosts a Vagrant Records podcast series celebrating 25 years of Vagrant releases. This conversation with Matt gives us a great opportunity to look at the Christian piece of the all-ages scene through the eyes of a personality similar to many on this show, but also with an outsider’s perspective. Uncle Mark

Mark Salomon is a legend and forefather of the Tooth & Nail scene. He was pioneering new artistic and cultural territory while being iconic, professional and a showman  all at the same time.  He has been massively influential from The Crucified and Stavesacre to Neon Horse and his podcast, Never Was, and his reputation for having solid personal relationships across decades with so many other legends. What a rock singer, a podcaster, and great relationships all have in common is the ability to connect & communicate ideas from your mind though your voice.  Everyone loves Mark's voice regardless of what he is doing. If it is his voice expressing his mind, it just works. Steve Kleisath- Bizzaro

Welcome back to labeled, the stories rumors and legends of tooth and nail records, I’m your host Matt carter and today’s episode features the not only legendary but iconic drummer Steve Kleisath from Strong arm, Shai Halud, further seeems forever, and the darling fire.   He is a legend because he had tremendous  influence on records that were tremendously influential and his style inspired many.  He is iconic because he comes in a package that’s different than you might expect.  He  plays left handed on a reverse setup drum kit and plays quirky parts that seem to come from another dimension.  This on top of the fact that Steve has become an a expert at many things including poker and holding world record video game scores.  He clearly has a special mind that accesses information and makes decisions in a uniqe way that has had a big impact.  I’ve never spoken to Steve and was very happy to have the opportunity to explore his mind a bit and I think you will enjoy that too.  Strong-arm - council of perfection,  slick shoes - rusty,  stretch arm strong - all we’ve lost,  Velour 100 - Your Sky Labeled Fest https://bit.ly/2UIHYbW Emo Night https://bit.ly/3BBNiym

Terminal: A False Start

Terminal can be described in many ways. One and Done, One Hit Wonder, Casualty of the industry, a career that seemed over before it began. Similar to Beloved in many ways, with a single album destined for an explosive followup the bands had seemingly failed before their future fanbase could materialize. The bands were able to achieve great things quickly, but weren’t equipped to handle being a touring band. Had they made it just a little further, big things were likely to happen. But instead the band stopped, the members grew up, grew as people, and learned how to be friends. A tragedy and celebration brought the band back and they've become an active again. So its very cool to be experiencing new beginning for Terminal. Travis Bryant is an exceptional vocalist and front man who brings real vulnerability to his music and to this conversation, I hope you will get as much from it as I did.     Promo Code: LABELED https://www.seetickets.us/event/Emeryland-presents-Labeled-Fest/437983   Emery: The Question Live Event http://bit.ly/3yGQtmO   Song List: Terminal - Wisher Embodyment - The Narrow Scope of Things Julianna Theory - Into the Dark Luti Kriss - The 'Anni Hilat' Ion Beloved - Failure on my Lips Underoath - When The Sun Sleeps (Live - 2003 - Pre-spencerpost-dallas) Terminal - How the Lonely keep the Lovely Terminal - Dark

Hopesfall: A Should've been Solid State Band

Hopesfall is a very influential post hardcore/spirit filled hardcore band. They emerged in the North Carolina scene and the greater Southeast with bands like Beloved, Stretch Armstrong, he is legend, Underoath and Luti-Kriss around 2000. they were a Furnacefest band and a Cornerstone band.   They were signed to Takehold Records who was acquired by Tooth and Nail in 2003 but due to some changes in the bands lineup and other factors, Hopesfall rejected the opportunity to be on Solidstate at that time and was allowed to instead sign to Trustkill records.    This conversation begins with me and Brandon Ebel talking about how he wanted Hopesfall, but it wasn't meant to be.     LABELED FEST: https://bit.ly/2WbN29h Use promo code: LABELED for 20% off   Music in this episode... Joe Musten of Beloved and Advent: The Purist

Joe Musten is the heartbeat of Beloved. He is known for doing all the lead screaming while being an absolutely brutal drummer. I think of Joe as an uncompromising and incorruptible purist and someone who sees the whole picture. He is driven to authentically express his passion in every situation, from live performance, to the studio recordings, to fan interaction, to band member, friend or podcast guest.   SPONSOR: Grandpa Loves Rhinos Song- Gimmie Gimme  https://open.spotify.com/artist/0tUI0co94MZfQ539byIwyw?si=wxBnh0SgRmi31LlXaAt-7A&dl_branch=1   Music in this episode... Chad Johnson- The Schemer

Chad Johnson is a significant figure in this movement who was identifying next level talent that was yet to reach its potential and creating opportunities for them. He was quite successful in aggregating and attracting further talent primarily in the southeast region. Further Seems Forever, Underoath, twothirtyeight, hopesfall, and more. He created Furnace Fest which became in addition to Cornerstone, a Mecca and pilgrimage to legendary experience. His record label, Takehold Records, was acquired by Tooth & Nail in the early 2000's where Chad was A&R for many of the largest bands on the label. He left Tooth & Nail to start Come and Live! in 2009 and now has revived Furnace Fest in 2021.   https://labeledpodcast.com/ Support Labeled on Patreon Join Labeled on Facebook www.furnacefest.us SONGS YOU HEARD ON THIS EPISODE: twothirtyeight- Coin Laundry Loser Underoath - A Boy Brushed Red Live mewithoutyou- January 1979 Showbread- Mouth Like a Magazine Underoath- Never Meant to Break Your Heart   MORE FROM TOOTH & NAIL: * Labeled: Music From The Podcast: smarturl.it/labeledplaylist * DISCOVER IT: New Tracks from T&N Records: smarturl.it/TNNDiscover * This Is Solid State: New Tracks from Solid State Records: https://spoti.fi/2CUCsaH * Tooth & Nail Store (LABELED Patreon members get 20% off everything): tnn.lnk.to/store
