The Theology & Influence of John Calvin Podcast
This week on Theology on the Go, our host, Dr. Jonathan Master is once again joined by Dr. Bruce Gordon. Dr. Gordon taught at the University of St. Andrews in Scotland, where he was professor of modern history and deputy director of the St. Andrews Reformation Studies Institute, before joining the faculty of Yale Divinity School in 2008. Dr. Gordon’s research and teaching focus on European religious cultures of the late-medieval and early modern periods, with a particular interest in the Reformation and its reception. His most recent book is John Calvin’s Institutes of the Christian Religion (Princeton 2016), which looks at the reception from the sixteenth century to the age of YouTube of one of the defining works of the Reformation. He is the author of Calvin (Yale, 2009), a biography of the Genevan reformer, and the Swiss Reformation (Manchester, 2002), a Choice Magazine “Outstanding Publication” (2003). Dr. Gordon teaches and supervises graduate students in a broad range of medieval and early modern subjects and their resonances in contemporary historiography and society. In 2012 he received an honorary doctorate from the University of Zurich. Today Dr. Master will continue his discussion with Dr. Gordon in the second of a two part series on John Calvin. Dr. Cara is the Hugh and Sallie Reaves Professor of New Testament at Reformed Theological Seminary-Charlotte and Provost and Chief Academic Officer for the Reformed Theological Seminary institution. He has been a professor at RTS since 1993. Dr. Cara was an engineer for seven years before the Lord re-directed him toward seminary. This week on Theology on the Go, our host, Dr. Jonathan Master is joined by Dr. James Dolezal. Dr. Dolezal is Assistant Professor in the School of Divinity at Cairn University. He is a California native and is a graduate of The Master’s College, The Master’s Seminary, and Westminster Theological Seminary. Prior to undertaking PhD studies at Westminster Dr. Dolezal was the pastor of a Reformed Baptist church in Alberta, Canada. He is the author of, God without Parts: Divine Simplicity and the Metaphysics of God’s Absoluteness (Pickwick, 2011), All That is in God (Reformation Heritage Books, 2017) as well as numerous articles and reviews. This week on Theology on the Go, our host, Dr. Jonathan Master is joined by Dr. William VanDoodewaard. Dr. VanDoodewaard is Professor of Church History at Puritan Reformed Theological Seminary. He has held appointments as Visiting Research Fellow in the School of History and Anthropology at Queen’s University Belfast and Visiting Scholar at Princeton Theological Seminary for his ongoing work in the history of biblical interpretation. Prior to coming to PRTS, Dr. VanDoodewaard taught at Patrick Henry College, near Washington, D.C., and at Huntington University in Indiana. He has written for Books & Culture, The Journal of British Studies, Themelios, Puritan Reformed Journal, Westminster Theological Journal, and online at The Gospel Coalition and Reformation21. He is also a contributor to a number of books, and the author of two: The Quest for the Historical Adam and The Marrow Controversy and Seceder Tradition. Dr. VanDoodewaard is an ordained minister who has served as a church planter; he worships with his family at Harvest Orthodox Presbyterian Church. The Theology of Martin Luther
This week on Theology on the Go, our host, Dr. Jonathan Master continues his conversation with Dr. Robert Kolb. Dr. Kolb was born and raised in Fort Dodge, Iowa, and attended Concordia College, St. Paul, Minn. (1959-1961); Concordia Senior College, Fort Wayne, Ind. (1961-1963); and Concordia Seminary, St. Louis, Mo. (1963-1968, M.Div., S.T.M.). After completing his doctorate in history at the University of Wisconsin, Madison (1973), he served as director of the Center for Reformation Research in St. Louis (1973-1977). Concordia College, St. Paul, called him in 1977 to teaching positions in the departments of religion and history; he also served as acting president (1989-1990). In 1993 Concordia Seminary, St. Louis, called him to be Missions Professor of systematic theology and director of the Institute for Mission Studies. From 1994 through 2010 he taught abroad, chiefly in post-Soviet Europe, for three months of the year. Dr. Kolb served as associate editor (1973-1994) and co-editor (1995-1997) of The Sixteenth Century Journal and is still co-editor, with A.R. Victor Raj, of Missio Apostolica (since 1996). He was a member of the Commission on Theology and Church Relations of The Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod (1984-1992) and its chair (1990-1992). He served as president of the Sixteenth Century Studies Conference (1981-1982) and the Society for Reformation Research (1994-1996). Since 1993 he has been a member of the Continuation Committee of the International Congress for Luther Research. Kolb has lectured at more than 40 educational institutions on five continents and at many ecclesiastical gatherings. Since 1996 he has been Gastdozent at the Lutherische Theologische Hochschule in Oberursel, Germany. Valparaiso University (2000), Concordia University Saint Paul (2005), and Concordia University Irvine (2008) have awarded him the Doctor of Letters honorary degree. Dr. Kolb has published extensively and he is an expert in the life and theology of Martin Luther. This week will focus on the theology of Martin Luther. The Ruling Elder Podcast
This week on Theology on the Go, our host, Dr. Jonathan Master is joined by Dr. Calvin L. Troup. Dr. Troup is the president of Geneva College (Beaver Falls, PA). Before becoming Geneva's twentieth President since 1848 Dr. Troup was Associate Professor and Director of the Rhetoric Ph.D. Program in the Department of Communication & Rhetorical Studies at Duquesne University, Pittsburgh, PA. He earned his B.A. from Geneva College (1983) and the M.A. (1991) and Ph.D. (1994) degrees from The Pennsylvania State University. His communication research agenda focuses on the rhetoric and philosophy of St. Augustine and Rhetoric of Technology from media ecology perspectives informed by the work of Jacques Ellul and Walter J. Ong. His published work includes Augustine for the Philosophers: The Rhetor of Hippo, the Confessions, and the Continentals (2014), Temporality, Eternity, and Wisdom: The Rhetoric of Augustine's Confessions (1999), scholarly book chapters and articles in journals such as Communication Quarterly, Explorations in Media Ecology, Rhetoric Society Quarterly, The Journal of Communication and Religion, and The Journal of Business Ethics. Dr. Troup has edited the Journal of Communication and Religion and is the editor-elect of Explorations in Media Ecology the international journal of the Media Ecology Association. Dr.Troup entered the academy after serving as a press aide in the U.S. House of Representatives and working as an association executive for a national non-profit organization in Washington, D.C. Today Dr. Master is going to talk with Dr. Troup about the office of the ruling elder. Dr. Troup is well suited to discuss this topic since he has served as a ruling elder in three different Presbyterian congregations.
