The Soundtrack to Confidence
Could you imagine watching your favorite epic film without the music? Would Jaws be nearly as scary if the open water scenes were not accompanied by the infamous John Williams two note alternating pattern dun nun, dun nun. For more than 45 years that sound has been our collective cultural shorthand to signal danger. Would the shower scene in Psycho be nearly as memorable without the accompanying eek eek eek. What about watching Star Wars without the theme music - not nearly as powerful. Composers have long understood the ability of music to affect a listener's state of mind. And now the science and the research is catching up with what composers have known all along, music affects us in profound ways. As the kick off to the Confidence Series I wanted to start off with the ability of music to boost not only our mood, but our self esteem and our confidence. The following episodes in the series will tackle other confidence blocks including mindset shifts, silencing your inner critic, and body positivity. All of those confidence enhancers work over time. But music, music works in the moment. The Journal of Positive Psychology published two studies in 2012 which found that listening to music can boost a person’s mood. Self belief has been directly connected to self-esteem and music has a direct effect on our self esteem. There is research to back up the fact that music can make you more confident during interviews. And today's doctors tell us that music can enhance the function of neural networks, slow the heart rate, lower blood pressure, reduce levels of stress hormones and inflammatory cytokines, and provide some relief to patients undergoing surgery, as well as heart attack and stroke victims. And let’s not ignore the healing power it will have when there will inevitably come a time in your life when you just need to blast some tunes and let your piece of shit ex boyfriend know that you don’t need his sorry ass anymore. Songs like this gives us the confidence to get through our bad days, and you know what - you have made it through 100% of your bad days and come out on the other side even stronger. You have the power to take control of all of the parts of your life - even the ones that feel out of control sometimes. The truth is music can change the way we perceive the world and ourselves. Musical patterns affect our auditory cortex which is the neural reward system as well as other areas involved in memory and emotion. Listening to certain songs can change our emotions or make us emotional. The truth is building self confidence and self love is not something that happens overnight. We will all have demons both internal and external that will affect how we see ourselves, and the following episodes in this series and others to come will certainly help provide the tools to face them, but now that you know that music can help you along the way - I have created a Spotify playlist for you which includes all the bad ass, confidence building songs that you shared with me on my LinkedIn and Instagram polls. This playlist is for all of us, so feel free to add your favorite songs to the list to inspire others to be more confident. This week's drink of the week is a cocktail called Brave Bull, which is just 1.5 oz of reposado tequila, 1 oz of kahlua and a lemon twist. That’s it. That’s it takes to be strong and brave like a bull. A special shout out to Sherri Snow, Executive Director at North End Music & Performing Arts Center and her students Hannah and Harper for providing the music for today’s podcast. 4 Silver Bullets to Finding Happiness with Pam Garramone
As Americans we are taught that we all have certain unalienable rights. Written right there in the pages of our Declaration of Independence is that we have the right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. Something about that line has always gotten me thinking. And it’s the word pursuit. You know why?Because I think of that word as having movement. The word pursuit, which means an effort to secure or attain, appears to me to be an ongoing effort, something which may slip through our fingers if we don’t keep working on it. So if happiness or the pursuit thereof, is one of our unalienable rights, how are we doing with it, after some 200 years after the writing of that line?Well, research suggests that we aren't doing so great. A new NORC poll drawing on trends from the long running General Social Survey finds Americans are less likely to call themselves very happy than at any point since that survey began back in 1972. If you think it’s because of the global pandemic you're both wrong and right: Research suggests that we've been unhappy for a while now. In March 2019, a full year before there was even a hint of an upcoming pandemic, The World Happiness Report, which is released to coincide with the United Nations International happiness day, stated that Americans are as unhappy as they've been in years. For the third straight year in a row, the US has dropped in the happiness rankings. So, how do we right this ship? How do we Bobby McFerrin our lives and ‘Don’t worry, be happy’?Lucky for you, our guest today knows all about finding happiness. Tune in to the episode as I’m joined by Pam Garramone, a Certified Positive Psychology Speaker and Life Coach teaching the Science of Happiness to anyone who wants to learn how to be happier. Pam talks all about Positive Psychology, her wonderful journey researching happiness and shares with us her 4 happiness boosters that we can start to use to be happier every day. Here’s a preview - your social connections are one of the number one happiness boosters you have! And to all those who say over and over again, “I’ll be happy when”....., you’re gonna find your answers today too! How to Flex Your Gratitude Muscles with Beth Hewitt
2020 is almost over. What a dumpster fire of a year AMIRIGHT? This is usually the time of the year when we gather our year end lists, think about all the things we have done, seen, heard and accomplished in the past 12 months. But right now the only thing I can think of is that I'm so glad it's almost over.Is it just me or are you also struggling to find things to be grateful for? I don't generally think of myself as an ungrateful bitch. But then I started getting nervous; what if I am and I don't even know it!? This question called for research, to see if some people are just more grateful than others, and if so why! Is there a gratitude gene? And what do you do if you don't have it?The research suggests that genetics may actually help explain why some people find it easier to feel and express gratitude than others. There have been studies that have explored what specific genes may help determine a person's grateful or less grateful disposition. Two promising candidates for this are the genes CD38 and COMT. While CD38 is involved in the secretion of the neuropeptide oxytocin, COMT acts in the recycling of the neurotransmitter dopamine. You remember our friends oxytocin from episode 20, and dopamine from episode 17 right. As I was pondering the research, I came across an email from a wonderful lady from my network who was starting a 28 day Gratitude journey on Facebook! Before my less grateful COMT gene could take over, I signed up for the journey, deciding to give my gratitude genes a workout. Each day within the Facebook community Beth prompted us to write down three things we were grateful for. And guess what? It totally helped me find the littlest things to be grateful for every day! We’re joined in the episode today by the incredibly positive Beth Hewitt, who’s a business and career strategist specializing in creative visualization, positivity and resilience. She's also the host of the Visualise You podcast. ( P.S. You're absolutely gonna fall in love with her accent!) Listen in as we discuss all about the 28-day Gratitude journey, why and how she decided to start it and how it’s impacted the participants and their outlook on life. Also, how it legit helped me flex my gratitude muscles! There’s absolutely no wrong entries for your Gratitude list, neither is there a specific time to practice it. Go at your pace and it becomes a habit!Drink of the Week Riverbench Blanc du Noir Sparkling Wine. Most people think of wine, especially in France, as a man's world. But look into the history of the three ladies mentioned in the episode to see how they revolutionized the champagne industry. I thank you again for being here for taking time out of your day to tune in and listen. Goodbye 2020! If you liked what you heard today, please leave a review and subscribe to the podcast. Is It Really Better To Give Than To Receive?
We’ve all heard the line before, that it is better to give than to receive. During the holidays you’ll hear it over and over again, but is it true, and if so why? What does the act of giving do for us?Sure, philosophers will tell you to give freely, but what about scientists? What does the data say - is there data to back up the idea that it is indeed better to be a giver than a getter? Well, of course the data backs it up or this would be a pretty shitty podcast episode. But let’s start by first defining what giving is. For the purpose of my research and this podcast we will use this definition. A Gift, is the transfer of something without the expectation of receiving something in return. There have been a number of studies on the biological effects of giving - decades of research actually. Tune in the learn how giving activates regions within the brain associated with pleasure and how the act of releases the same hormones within the body that are released during sex!We also discuss three types of business interaction styles: takers, matchers, and givers. Listen in to determine which interaction style is yours. We also take a trip to the island of Puerto Rico where we discover this week's Drink of the Week: Coquito or Puerto Rican Eggnog!Coquito see link for the full recipe: https://thenovicechefblog.com/coquito/And if you would like a shout out for tipping your bartender and contributing to the ever growing This Sh!t Works bar tab click https://www.paypal.com/paypalme/JulieBrownBD?locale.x=en_US to make a donation. The Power of Friendship with Lydia Denworth
Would you be surprised if I told you that friendship is as important for your health as diet and exercise. That there is an actual correlation between how social you are and how long you will live! New research shows that the power of friendship gets stronger with age and may even be more important than family relationships, which doesn't surprise me one fucking bit since my personal experience is that families are messy and unreliable. And it's your friends that you can depend on!Why then do they take a backseat to our more pressing day to day responsibilities? We all have friends, we all make friends, and friendship seems to be a hallmark of human behavior. But despite all this, it’s taken years for scientists to formally consider this aspect of human life! Quite surprisingly, even the study of animals has uncovered that social relationships and bonding are what ensure that you thrive. That it's not just survival of the fittest but also of the friendliest!Joining me on the episode today is Lydia Denworth, contributing editor for Scientific American, writer for Psychology Today, as well as the author of ‘Friendship: The Evolution, Biology and Extraordinary Power of Life's Fundamental Bond’. Take a moment to listen in on my conversation with Lydia to hear about her research into the biological, psychological, and evolutionary foundations of friendships, the importance of these friendships for long term happiness, and how we can learn to cultivate, nurture, and invest in our friendships.Friendship is like rewarding your brain, it's fun and it's pleasurable, so you keep coming back for more. Building on a friendship is neither easy nor quick. Lydia shares how a researcher at the University of Kansas actually counted up the number of hours it takes to go from an acquaintance to a friend, to a really good friend. Friendship is a voluntary relationship that definitely takes time to build!Lydia introduces us to Sylvia, a real mean baboon, that is until she experienced loss. What Sylvia did after her loss stunned even the primatologists, and her actions ultimately led to a better understanding of the importance of friendship and social bonding in animals.Tune in to experience the surprise for yourself!Growing up, I thought I was going to be a biologist, making me pursue a bachelor's degree in biology that I do nothing with today. And my inner biologists absolutely loved the conversation with Lydia. I hope you have a good time listening too.Drink of the Week is Beautiful Friendship, a cocktail of Cointreau, dark rum, lime juice, simple syrup and tamarind concentrate. (P.S.-If you don't know about tamarind concentrate or tamarind juice and you aren't using it in your cocktails, you don't know what you're missing out on!) Ingredients- 0.75 oz Cointreau1.5 oz Dark rum0.5 oz Fresh lime juice0.25 oz Simple syrup1 bar spoon Tamarind concentrate 5 leaves Fresh mint1 pinch Cinnamon2 oz SodaMuddle mint in simple syrup in the bottom of a shaker. Real Friends vs Work Friends
A study showed that 70 percent of employees say friends at work is the most crucial element to a happy working life, and 58 percent of men would refuse a higher-paying job if it meant not getting along with co-workers. Maybe this is why the Gallup research shows that people who have strong work relationships are more engaged, produce higher-quality work and have a higher state of well being. Then why do only 15% of people believe that they have a real friend at work? Probably because most of us have a tendency to separate and isolate our friendships, defining people either as our work friends or our “real” friends, not realizing the huge benefits of unifying them and bridging the distances between the two.Have you ever tried to get to know your colleagues at work well enough to make wonderful friends out of them? If not, you have underestimated their role in your happiness and in your success, for they have the power to phenomenally up your wellness and productivity! Here are a few tips to help turn your work friends into real friends Take it slow and one step at a time. Support your friends inside of the office. Use social media to find out more about them. Do lunch together. Ask them if they’re interested in doing something together. Find common interests. Include your real friends in get-togethers with work friends. Take the risk of forming better bonds. Listen in for more tips and tricks to turning work relationships into real friendships! Drink of the Week: The Negro Modelo beerYou might not be able to go to a bar and grab beers with your friends right now. But you can still drink beer. I realized it has been a while since I highlighted a beer as the Drink of the Week. A little history lesson about Negro Modelo, the first bottle came off the assembly line in 1925 and since then has been a part of Mexican culture. It's a fixture at major holidays, family celebrations, and friendly get-togethers from Sonora to Chiapas. There website actually has a number of cocktails that you can make with Negro Modelo - maybe I’ll have to try one of them one week for the drink of the week - I actaully don’t think I’ve ever made a cocktail with beer before. Have you? Let me know if you have.If you liked what you heard today, please leave a review and subscribe to the podcast. How to Combat Holiday Loneliness
Even during good years the holidays can be a difficult time for some people. Now, combine that with Covid fatigue, increased loneliness, travel restrictions, and isolation and the holidays can seem like an even more stark and lonely time. The holiday season this year is going to be different for everyone. Yes, we are untethered from the family and tradition this year, but we can still incorporate some parts of our tradition into the holiday and perhaps even create new traditions worthy of being carried forward into next year's holiday gatherings when we are all finally allowed to be together again. Wanna know how? Listen in!Therapist Aundi Kolber has tips to help us battle holiday loneliness. She says: 1. Identify two or three people that you can reach out to, if the loneliness of the holidays seems too overwhelming. 2. Do not wait until you are overwhelmed to contact them and ask if they can be on “your team” of people to contact when you need to be encouraged or just need someone to talk to! There are hundreds of thousands of people who’ve lost loved ones due to the virus, and it will be their first holiday season without them. We are all struggling, know that we’re all in this together! What new traditions can you create this year, perhaps you can create a Vid Hug Thanksgiving Video for all the people that you can’t be with in person. What about taking part in secret Santa events like a Secret Santa Dog, or Secret Santa Sis/Brother helping to bring unexpected joy to someone. Perhaps you can pack up a Thanksgiving treat to deliver to someone you know is struggling. Something good always comes with the bad - can you find it, and if you can’t find it can you make it?Drink of the Week: Sage Gold Rush CocktailFor me, sage is the Thanksgiving herb and I grow it in my garden so I always have plenty of it on hand. Make a honey simple syrup with equal parts honey and water. After it has boiled together, add a bunch of sage leaves. Let it steep in the syrup while it cools, then remove the sage leaves. 2 oz. Bourbon 1 ½ oz. syrup 1 ½ oz. lemon juice Sage sprigsLemon TwistTo make the cocktail, combine the first 3 in an ice fill shaker. Shake that shit for a minute and then strain it into an old-fashioned glass and garnish it with a lemon twist and some sprigs of sage. Check out my Instagram stories later today to see pics of this drink and all the other Thanksgiving shit I never have time to make but I'm definitely going to make this year, and please know this: If you need more people on your team, if you are feeling isolated and alone this holiday season, please know that you can reach out to me as I’ll be more than happy to be part of your team!
