History of Modern Greece
Daniel Roberts
The History of Modern Greece covers the events of the Greek People from the fall of Constantinople in 1453 to the Greek War of Independence in 1821-1832, to the modern day. We are a father and son team. We are not historians, but we are hardcore fans of history. We embarked on a mission to understand exactly how the Ancient Greek civilization transformed into the modern nation we see today. To prepare ourselves for the journey we purchased dozens of textbooks, watched numberless documentaries, and listened to as many historical podcasts as we could find. Come and join us on our journey to discover the History of Modern Greece.

036: Iconoclasts
With the Arab Conquests over, the Roman Empire was able to step back and take a deep breath. For over half a century, they watched an empire come out of nowhere, conquering their cities and provinces and neighbors and relatives. The Roman Empire was once the most dominant superpower in the world... but that was no longer the case. There was a new Empire... a bigger Empire, and they had their own religion too. What went wrong? Why was God punishing the Roman Empire? What had they done wrong? Well... some people within the capital city thought they had a pretty good idea what was angering God, and they were going to do something about it.The History of Modern Greece covers the events of the Greek People from the fall of Constantinople in 1453 to the Greek War of Independence in 1821-1832, all the way through to the Greco-Turkish War from 1919 to 1922.Website: www.moderngreecepodcast.comMusic by Mark Jungerman: www.marcjungermann.comIf you enjoyed this episode and would like to learn more about Iconoclasm, then I highly recommend listening to two other podcasts. 035: The Arab Civil War & The Abbasid Revolution
The mighty Arab Caliphate had grown to become one of the largest Empires the world had ever seen, and they seemed to have come out of nowhere. Half of the Roman Empire, all of the Persian Empire, and large swaths of land in Africa and Asia were all under the control of the Umayyad Caliphate. But their lust for conquest and ruthlessness, and Arab Supremacy, made the people of the new empire uneasy with their current way of life. In the northern outskirts of the old Persian Empire, a new dynasty that could trace its lineage to the prophet Mohammad was planning their move. This is the Rise of the Abbasid Caliphate. The History of Modern Greece covers the events of the Greek People from the fall of Constantinople in 1453 to the Greek War of Independence in 1821-1832, all the way through to the Greco-Turkish War from 1919 to 1922.Website: www.moderngreecepodcast.comMusic by Mark Jungerman: www.marcjungermann.comIf you enjoyed this episode and would like to hear more about the decline of the Umayyad Caliphate and the Rise of the Abbasids, I recommend two podcasts for you. 034: the Arab Siege of Constantinople in 717 CE
The invincible Arab army set its sights on Constantinople; once this city fell, the entire Roman Empire would crumble in the wake of the Rashidun Caliphate. Unfortunately for the Arabs, the Theodosian Walls were unlike anything they had ever encountered before. These walls were built at the height of the Roman Empire, and they would stand for over a thousand years. At this place, the Tsunami, which was the Umayyad Caliphate, would break against the walls of Constantinople and the Flames of Greek Fire. The History of Modern Greece covers the events of the Greek People from the fall of Constantinople in 1453 to the Greek War of Independence in 1821-1832, all the way through to the Greco-Turkish War from 1919 to 1922.Website: www.moderngreecepodcast.comMusic by Mark Jungerman: www.marcjungermann.comIf you enjoyed this episode and would like to learn more about the Siege of Constantinople, and the legendary battle on the Bosphorus, where the Greek ships used ancient flame throwers to set the water on fire and destroy the Arab fleet, then you must listen to Robin Pierson’s History of Byzantium podcast.https://thehistoryofbyzantium.com/
