051: Karin Mecham: Teenage Pregnancy

Today I sit down with Karin Mecham.  She recounts her story of growing up with a very dogmatic Grandfather who was well known in the Church in his home area.  She also shares how her parents offered balance with their support and non-judgemental approach.  She shares her bad choices which led to a teenage pregnancy and recounts how she handled it.  This story goes to show that while generally policies may be good, that in the end the Spirit should be our guide as there are always exceptions to the rule. 050: Jon Westover and Bill Reel: Doctrine

I sit down and have a discussion with Jon Westover over What is Doctrine and What isn’t.  We attempt to try and excavate doctrine amidst the culture.  Using statements from leaders and our own unauthoritative insights, we try to establish ways the average member can navigate “What is Doctrine”. – How big is the “Box” of Mormon Doctrine? – What is the Church’s official stance on what is Doctrine? –  Is there more room for those struggling to have more flexibility? – What was Joseph Smith’s feelings on creeds and dogma and defining Mormonism strictly? To get to know our guest participant, Jon Westover better, please check out these information resources https://mormonscholarstestify.org/3093/jonathan-hinton-westover http://uvu.edu/profpages/jhwestover The post 050: Jon Westover and Bill Reel: Doctrine appeared first on Mormon Discussion by Bill Reel.

046: Patrick Mason: War and Peace

We interview Patrick Mason, one of the editors of the book “War & Peace In Our Time : Mormon Perspectives”.  We discuss War and Peace in the scriptures, in our LDS culture, and in our views within our Church community.  Patrick and I discuss how a LDS can be a faithful, active, participating Latter-Day Saint while one’s personal beliefs fall anywhere along the spectrum of believing in a “Just War” is condoned by God to the other extreme of being a pacifist. That in reflection there is plenty of room for faith within this issue once we grasp how to navigate our way through scriptures and what is Doctrine. The book – War & Peace can be purchased at Greg Kofford Books at the link below http://www.gregkofford.com/products/war-and-peace-in-our-time The post 046: Patrick Mason: War and Peace appeared first on Mormon Discussion by Bill Reel.

045: The Virtue of Patience

This episode deals with helping us understand the context of why our early leaders may have been over protective of information or in shielding ourselves against critics.  Instead of seeing this shielding in a black and white way we try to give some context to the story so that we in the end might be more patient with those whose responsibility it is to watch over us. 042: Tithing: a nuanced view

What is Tithing?  Many love to jump in here and state their definition and unknowingly impose it on others.  But what Does the Lord say and perhaps more importantly for us as Latter-Day Saints, what does the Church say on this matter officially.  Is tithing paid on Gross wages, net wages, or leftover after all our needs are provided for? Today we examine that and discuss how we define Tithing within the Church… I mean really get at the real definition http://thoughtsonthingsandstuff.com/lds-tithing-in-a-word/ The post 042: Tithing: a nuanced view appeared first on Mormon Discussion by Bill Reel.
