175: Same Sex Policy Changes: My Thoughts

Tonight I have released a short episode sharing my thoughts on the policy changes that occurred today which imposes a view of those in Same Sex Marriages absolutely as apostates and which withholds ordinances from children of same sex couples without the child doing anything wrong with their agency.   It is my Mormon right to raise a hand opposed and I do indeed dissent. 172: Handling Missionary Work

How do you handle Missionary work now that you have reconstructed your faith?  Several listeners have asked me this and I finally sat down and discuss it here.  Do I still value Missionary work?  What will I teach and testify of and what do I avoid or rephrase when another member (including fulltime missionaries) speaks up? Today I share my thoughts on what I would and would not teach and why I still value Missionary work!!! The post 172: Handling Missionary Work appeared first on Mormon Discussion by Bill Reel.

169: The Inner Authority

Today we talk about a strange scripture.  John 16:7. Nevertheless I tell you the truth; It is expedient for you that I go away: for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I depart, I will send him unto you. This scripture always seemed odd till a few days ago when it struck what at least one potential meaning could be.  This episode is short but hopefully full of insight as each of us move through a faith deconstruction and reconstruction.    May each of us find our Innner Authority while leading with faith. 168: Seer Stones, Folk Magic, and Alvin’s Hand

With The Church releasing photos of the Seer Stone it seems to beg the question what really is at the root of our discomfort with this narrative.  For me the answer is obvious….. Treasure Digging and Folk Magic and the depth of the details of how all the characters involved are just that……. involved. We hit on the Chase family, magic circles, guardian spirits, throat slit Spaniards, Obadiah Dogberry, and Alvin’s Hand.  This one was fun and I hope you find it fun too. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Seer_stone_(Latter_Day_Saints) https://tspace.library.utoronto.ca/bitstream/1807/27599/3/Parker_Stuart_AC_201103_PhD_thesis.pdf http://undergroundnotes.com/graphics7/Dialogue_V27N03_211.pdf https://exploringmormonism.com/palmyra-magic-timeline/ http://en.fairmormon.org/Joseph_Smith/Seer_stones http://en.fairmormon.org/Joseph_Smith/Seer_stones/%22Rock_in_hat%22_used_for_Book_of_Mormon_translation http://en.fairmormon.org/Book_of_Mormon/Translation/Joseph’s_use_of_the_seer_stone_as_a_youth http://fr.fairmormon.org/Joseph_Smith/Seer_stones https://www.lds.org/ensign/1987/08/the-alvin-smith-story-fact-and-fiction?lang=eng http://mit.irr.org/changing-first-vision-accounts-1827-first-vision-account-related-willard-chase http://www.fullerconsideration.com/sources.php?cat=HP-FBC   The post 168: Seer Stones, Folk Magic, and Alvin’s Hand appeared first on Mormon Discussion by Bill Reel.
