Rough Cut Thought: People Doing Stuff Don’t Have Time to Criticize Others
This third episode of the Rough Cut Thoughts series. This week’s thought: People doing stuff don’t have the time to criticize others! Go ahead and read that sentence again. If you’re a person who is doing stuff, you probably know exactly what I mean. Don’t know what I mean? Maybe that means you’re playing things too safe. My hope is that this thought will encourage some of us and challenge others. Listen in. Wisdom to live by with Wired Magazine’s Kevin Kelly
On today’s episode of The Conversation, I am joined by leading technology thinker and the founding editor of Wired Magazine, Kevin Kelly. Kevin is a self-proclaimed radical optimist and hoarder of quotes on life advice. Over the years, he has compiled his favorite pieces of wisdom (particularly things he wished he had known when he was younger) and on his 68th birthday, he gifted what he’d written down to his young adult children. The results went viral so Kevin published his writings as a book so the world could benefit from what he’s learned. His advice ranges from finding lost items around your house to attending funerals (my personal favorite) and just about everything in between! Grab a copy of Kevin’s book here. Ken Costa on the Need for Friendship in Today’s World
In today’s conversation, I sit down with Ken Costa, a leading global investment banker and philanthropist, about his new book in which he wrote about how the transfer of wealth (in the amount of $100 trillion!) from the Boomer generation to Gen Z will revolutionize capitalism. And while this is certainly important, we talk about something that matters even more - friendship. In a world where mental health and isolation are on the rise, Ken (a baby-boomer himself) says “building friendships is one of the most vital and sustaining requirements for a maturing generation.” We also talk about the importance of learning from people of all ages as well as connecting people to others. Ken is an amazing thought leader with a wealth of knowledge and wisdom to share. Grab a copy of Ken’s book here. Minnesota Viking Harrison Phillips on The Moments That Shaped Him
In today’s conversation, I got to connect with Harrison Phillips, defensive tackle for the Minnesota Vikings. We talk about some important moments in Harrison’s life that have shaped him into the man he is today. From how he started following Jesus to why he started a foundation called Harrison’s Playmakers for young people with special needs. On the night it was announced that he was the 2023 Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year Award Nominee, Harrison walked into a room of 200 family, friends and young people who have been helped by his foundation cheering him on, which he describes as “one of the coolest moments of my life.” (Watch the video here). Harrison’s encouragement to make an impact is a must listen! Gary Haugen: Jesus & Justice
On today’s podcast, I sit down with Gary Haugen, the founder and CEO of the International Justice Mission, an amazing global nonprofit organization working to end slavery and violence around the world. Oftentimes Jesus & justice seem to oppose each other. Like you need to choose one or the other. Gary tells the story of how IJM started and explains how Jesus and justice actually go together! - they’re not opposed (like many Christians may feel they are or should be). One of my favorite parts of the interview is only on Youtube where Gary gets vulnerable by sharing how he leads his team when he feels fragile. As a leader, I feel fragile often (aka daily!) God Behind Bars with Jake Bodine
Over 2.3 million people in the U.S. are incarcerated each year. This group of people are the most unchurched and unreached population in our country. An organization called God Behind Bars is on a mission to change that by introducing inmates to Jesus and connecting them to a local church. Jake Bodine, founder of GBB, joins me to share his personal faith story and how he went from a rebellious pastor’s kid to the pastor of a prison church that has grown to reach more than 1 million inmates with the good news of the Gospel! Last November, Embrace (the church I get to pastor) launched a God Behind Bars Campus at Mike Durfee State Prison and it’s one of the best decisions we’ve ever made as a church. Jake & I also talk through practical ways you can take the message of Matthew 25 to heart by helping and supporting inmates and their families. Granger Smith: When to Make a Change (& Leave Country Music)
Granger Smith is back on the podcast to talk about the peace he has come to know since leaving country music to pursue a career in ministry. As anticipation about the final show of the tour built up, Granger took the stage and happily surrendered everything he had ever known and gave it to God. He gave up being praised and worshiped by fans, for a greater call that God had on his life. Granger’s journey is an example of how trusting and obeying God can lead to something beautiful… even if there’s heartache along the way. Listen to Granger’s first episode on The Conversation Podcast here. Get a copy of Granger’s book Up Towards The Light. Duck Dynasty’s Willie Robertson on Being a Better Husband, Father & Follower of Jesus
Willie Robertson from Duck Dynasty joins me for a conversation about marriage, family and Jesus. Willie and his Wife, Korie, met in third grade, got married a year after high school and have now been married for 32 years. What’s their secret? The easygoing power couple have six children and five grandchildren and have found that being consistent in character has been key to leading their kids to the Lord. Willie also talks about how sharing the Gospel with others should be as easy as talking about your spouse, pets or favorite hobby. And the more you share about Jesus, the easier it gets! If you need some easy and practical questions to start faith conversations with, Willie gives some great examples and also covers what he NEVER asks (which might surprise you).
