The Real Sober Moms with Rachel
Trigger warning: In today’s episode we talk about Postpartum OCD. If you are struggling with postpartum, please speak to your doctor asap. Today I am chatting with Rachel. Rachel was always the party girl before she had kids. After becoming a mom, though, her relationship with alcohol grew darker. She leaned heavily on alcohol to cope with postpartum anxiety and intrusive thoughts… but it did the opposite of helping. About 5 months ago, Rachel hit her rock bottom. After a long night of drinking she got sick in front of her daughters. The fear and worry in their eyes served as a major wake up call: She never wanted her girls to remember her like this. She had to be done. Since getting sober, Rachel has been able to find healthier ways to deal with the issues in her life. And just as importantly - she feels good about the example she is setting for her girls. We now have a Patreon! Please consider supporting the show by becoming a patron. The Business Behind Mommy Bloggers + Mommy Wine Culture
I am so grateful for the opportunity to share the journey of sobriety with so many of you through this podcast. I never dreamed that it would become all that it has become and I am so excited about what we can achieve together in the new year! One of my big goals for 2023 is to change how influencers and celebrities portray mommy wine culture online. People need to be held accountable for false and inaccurate posts about alcohol. I want to replace the term ‘mommy blogger’ or ‘creator’ with marketer. Because that is what their content is - It’s smoke and mirrors that cover up the dark truths about alcohol. That is my goal for the new year, and I’m so glad we’re in this together. We now have a Patreon! Please consider supporting the show by becoming a patron. The Real Sober Moms with Sara
Today I am chatting with Sara! Drinking was the norm in Sara’s family growing up, so it felt only natural that she took to drinking once she became a mom herself. Alcohol cemented itself so deeply into Sara’s life after becoming a mom that she didn’t quit even while she was fighting cancer. It wasn’t until her sons were teenagers that she began to really ask herself some hard questions about her drinking. What behavior was she modeling for her sons? How could she ask them not to drink when she still drank every day? The hypocrisy proved too much for her, so Sara decided to explore what life could be like without alcohol. Since becoming sober, Sara lost her mom. It has been such a relief to find healthier ways to work through her grief than simply masking it with alcohol. Her favorite part of sobriety, though? It’s the simple fact that she can be the taxi cab driver for her teenage sons and their friends without worrying about if she’s sober. We now have a Patreon! When Party Girls Turn into Moms With Kezia of The Sober Elephant Chronicles
Today I’m chatting with Kezia Calvert of Sober Elephant Chronicles! Alcohol found its way to the center of Kezia’s life in her late 20s. Working in events for the nightclub industry, it felt only natural to party all night until she blacked out, suffer through hangovers and anxiety attacks the next day, and then do it all again the next night. Kezia stepped away from the party lifestyle when her daughter was born, but she didn’t leave alcohol behind. On the contrary, she tried everything she could think of to fit alcohol into her new life as a mom. It was then that she found herself in a dangerous spiral - She would try to stop drinking, end up in the ER with withdrawal symptoms, and then go right back to drinking again. It was her mom who finally broke the cycle with an email to her titled ‘The elephant in the room’. From there, Kezia challenged herself to explore what the path to sobriety could look like for her. Now two years sober, Kezia shares her story through her authentic and honest writing at The Sober Elephant Chronicles, a platform she created to help other women know that they are not alone. The Real Sober Moms with Keri
Today I’m chatting with Keri, the first sober curious mom to join the pod! While Keri hasn’t experienced a rock bottom, she has definitely experienced enough rough mornings filled with debilitating ‘hangziety’ to make her question her relationship with alcohol. She’s not sure where she will land. It might be drinking in moderation, or it might be cutting alcohol out all together, but Keri knows one thing is for sure - she does not want to spiral back to where she was before. This conversation is a great one for anyone who’s questioning their habit of drinking alcohol! Join The Sober Mom Life FB group - https://www.facebook.com/groups/1542852942745657 We have merch!!!! Mommy Does Not Need Wine with The Sober Brown Queen
Today I’m chatting with Luce of The Sober Brown Queen on Instagram!Luce’s challenges with alcohol were never public. She wasn’t the woman going to bars or showing up to work drunk. Instead, wine was Luce’s in-home coping mechanism. As the years went by, Luce found herself falling into an worsening spiral of overindulgence with both food and alcohol as she struggled to manage her stress. As it grew worse, she grew more scared… and then she drank more to fend off the fear. Eventually, it all came to a head in the summer of 2021 when she found herself sick after 7 straight days of drinking. Lying in bed so hungover that she couldn’t walk, Luce realized that “if this was considered ‘fun’, then she didn’t want to have fun anymore.”That night, she made an instant decision. She gathered up her 3 daughters, brought them into her bed, and talked to them about her plan to stop drinking once and for all. Luce has not had a single drink since that day.In sobriety, Luce has gotten to know herself again. And better yet, she has begun to love herself again! The Real Sober Moms with Christine
In college, Christine was the girl who could drink everyone under the table at a party. Yet, once she found herself in an abusive relationship, alcohol no longer felt like a party - It felt like a numbing agent. As the years progressed, alcohol stole Christine’s passion for life to the point that she couldn’t even play a game with her kids without a glass of wine in hand. 46 days ago, Christine put down the wine glass and set out on a journey to heal. She has been leaning on books, podcasts, and community to help her through. As she reaches day 50, Christine is feeling a fresh and renewed hope for her future without alcohol! It’s Cool Over On This Side of the Bottle with Shay Mitchell
Today recovery coach Shay Mitchell joins me on the pod! Shay’s journey with alcohol is a story of extremes. She grew up in a religion where alcohol was strictly forbidden, yet addiction and partying were secret staples of her parents’ home lives. It wasn’t until after high school that Shay began drinking, though. But when she did? Everything changed. Alcohol became the crutch that she relied on through a young marriage, a divorce, and postpartum depression. With each passing year her dependence grew more and more severe, landing her in rehab multiple times over the course of 8 years.Shay is now over 900 days sober, and she’s starkly honest about how hard the journey has been to get here. Eventually, it was her own commitment to herself that got her to stick to sobriety, and she is so glad she did. Shay is now a recovery coach helping others navigate the challenging waters of getting sober. You can learn more about her offerings at www.shaysober.com!
