136: How PLAY Can Boost Your Business with Rob Murgatroyd
It was a blast to sit down and talk with one of my best friends, fellow entrepreneur and podcaster, Rob Murgatroyd. He's changed my life in more ways than one, but I'm most grateful for him and our friendship because he taught me how to incorporate more play into my life. Because what fun is being successful if you can't enjoy it, right? Today Rob is sharing how he finds balance between work and play and why you're doing yourself (and likely your business) a disservice by not finding it. He admits that it's not always the easiest task, but if you focus on what you really want your life to look like and create the plans to go along with it, you'll be well on your way. It's my hope that this episode encourages and inspires YOU to get out there and PLAY hard! Question Highlights: What's your favorite quote? What's one of your superpowers? What's one thing you're afraid of? What's one of your favorite accomplishments? How does giving continue to drive you? How do you balance your chiropractic business, podcast and travel? What is the first step for people to help them see there's a light at the end of the tunnel? What do you find when you ask entrepreneurs about where they find their play and balance? How has tribe influenced your level of play? Why is it so imperative that we make time for play when we are so driven and successful? What's another example of a hard-driving entrepreneur that you've had a major influence on to play more and how has it influenced their business? Who's the perfect candidate for your new mastermind? In This Episode We Talk about: Why Rob felt compelled to fund a baby's heart surgery Why Rob is so passionate about traveling The balance between work and play Creating plans around what you want your life to look like Why the lives of high-level entrepreneurs are out of balance How Rob has influenced Chris and Lori's views on play Getting out of our comfort zones What Rob's "envelope goal activity" is all about Why masterminds work Rob's new and different mastermind that mixes business and play And so much more… Rob's Thoughts… "You are so much more than your business." "Once you change your physical environment, you come back refreshed with new ways of thinking." "There's nothing spiritual about a bread line." -- I have overcome my share of obstacles in order to architect the life of my dreams and uncover the key to lasting, meaningful success. Growing up in Queens (literally on the wrong side of the tracks), my early years were tumultuous, marked by hardship and violence. With home being a less-than-idyllic place, I clung to work and education as my ticket out of the bedroom I shared with three brothers, and the low-income reality of the life my parents couldn't seem to escape. The minute I was old enough, I threw myself into any job I could get my hands on, from washing cars at filling stations to washing hair in salons. In hindsight, the high-end neighborhood across the tracks (home to the doctors and lawyers) likely played an unconscious role in my decision to attend school to be a chiropractor. Post high school graduation, I moved to Atlanta to complete my training and never looked back. Over the next decade I built a successful chiropractic practice, welcomed my first child, experienced the heartbreak of a challenging divorce, found healing and redemption when I met and married my wife, and read a book that changed my life and uncovered for me the world of lifestyle-entrepreneurship. That book was The 4-Hour Workweek by Tim Ferris. Having spent my entire life thus far in relentless hustle mode, I was ready for the PLAY HARD side of the hard work coin. My wife and I wanted to escape the grind and travel the world, so we did. In 2006 we launched our travel/lifestyle Blog 'Jetset Life' and my all or nothing tendencies showed up for the party. Predictably, poppin' bottles on yachts grew old and I became aware that once again my life was out of balance and I felt disconnected and unfulfilled. THIS was the pivotal moment I decided to apply myself to mastering the counter-balance between the science of achievement and the art of fulfillment. From THIS, the Work Hard, Play Hard podcast is born. 135: It's OK to Change Your Mind
Today's topic can be a taboo topic to talk about because there are so many conflicting opinions out there as to why a person shouldn't or can't change their mind. While I completely agree that you can't change your mind on a regular basis, I also believe that if you don't like the path you're on, it's OK to change your mind and get off it. In fact, in this episode, I'm giving you "permission!" There are a couple moments in my life when I did the unthinkable and changed my mind – and they weren't small decisions at all. The first is my brief stint in college. I didn't want to be there. I wanted to be out in the world and making money, but I also wanted to make my parents happy. So I stayed and sabotaged my grades by not engaging (Books? Who needs those?) and excessive partying. Needless to say, I was kicked out. I share this story with you for two reasons… Don't take the roundabout way. Take the direct route. I was right! I made it to the outside world and made $75K in small-town WI – 20 years ago! Another impactful decision I made was to leave the small investment company I helped found. While we were very successful, it just never felt "right." Fortunately, I learned from the past and had a talk with my partner and bowed out of the business. FYI – this business has since done billions of dollars in investments. It goes to show you that it's not always about the money – it's about what makes you feel the best, too. "A lot of money in itself isn't necessarily worth it – fulfilling money in itself always is." Be prepared though. When you change your mind abruptly you'll likely have to change your mindset around different things as well. With big decisions often come many mini decisions to help support them. Whether it's your spending habits, living situation or lifestyle… nothing is off limits. But if it's keeping you on your path, it's worth it. "It's OK to change your mind just for YOU." When you follow your intuition and what feels right, good things are bound to come your way. Wherever you're stuck – be it in a relationship, your career etc., it's within your power to change it. How empowering is that? It is my hope that this episode gives you permission to change your mind when the path doesn't feel right. But once you do, make sure you follow suit and take ACTION. 133: Who Are You NOT To??
While on Lori's book tour I've found myself in a state of awe watching Lori serve others over the past couple weeks – even when sick. Yep, she was sick and still showed up and rocked the stage to help others make lasting changes in their lives. So it got me to thinking… With all these people in the room, including myself, I realized that ALL of us are capable of doing that based on the gifts we were given. We all have unique talents that we can use to create a solution for people in pain. "You have a responsibility to get over yourself and do this." Set aside those nerves, your worry about what others will think etc., and start serving. Can you imagine what this world would look like if every person had a solution to someone else's problem? So I ask you, who are you not show up and serve your solution? Keep in mind that everything is an energy exchange. Many people use money as that energy source, but it's not always the case. "When you gift your solutions to other people's problems you are gifting them energy." And by pushing out your energy/solution to more and more people, you have the potential to become wealthy. Don't let others suffer when you have a solution they need. So get out there, show up and serve others with your talents! In This Episode We Talk about: Chris' revelation while on Lori's book tour Serving others and creating a solution for their problems Why everything is an energy exchange Resources: Now accepting applications for the 2019 For the Love of Money Mastermind. 131: More People NEED YOU Than You Think
Today's episode is all about flipping your perspective upside-down and leaving you empowered to find more customers to build your dream(s) and wealth. Get ready… "There are more people out there who need you more than you need them." Here are two reasons why I love this statement so much. There are plenty of people that need what you have to sell whether it's a product, service, talent etc. You don't need anyone, however, you can desire people to partake in what you have to offer. Saying you need something comes from a place of lack, and we know that we don't operate from that place, right? We all have individual talents and abilities and we need to share them. Sure, there may be someone else or another company who's doing something similar, but they're not YOU. So before you let your inner dialogue run away with phrases of lack (I'm not good enough; no one wants what I have to offer etc.), realize that there are 7 billion possible takers in this world… The odds are clearly in your favor. "There is more than enough to go around." Isn't that empowering to think that there's just people who haven't found you yet? But don't get lazy… it's still your no. 1 job to find these people. Do the work, outreach, marketing and whatever else you need to do to make it happen. In This Episode We Talk about: Why people need you more than you think Why it's your job to find these people Banishing the negative self-talk around your skill, product etc. Resources: Now accepting applications for the 2019 For the Love of Money Mastermind. 129: My Millionaire Mornings
I'm addressing another popular question today and that's, "What do your mornings look like?" Let me start by saying that I think having rituals (whether they're in the morning, mid-day or evening) are vitally important to a person's success. These rituals are crucial to my and Lori's self-care, and let's be real, our sanity! Personally, mornings work the best for me. "There is no easier time to take control of your day than in the first 30 minutes of the day." Think about it… the first 30 minutes of your day are the easiest to control. For me, it's the first two hours, but that's the time that Lori and I have carved out of our day as "protected time." We put ourselves first so we can be the best versions of ourselves for others the rest of the day. Here's what the first part of the day looks like for me: Wake up and immediately say my mantra: "I am happier, healthier, wealthier and more fit than I was yesterday." 60-90 second prayer of what I'm grateful for. This list varies and is very child-like, but it really does set the tone of my thoughts for the day (hello, gratitude and possibility!). Pages before Swipes + COFFEE! OK, the coffee is optional, of course, but it's mandatory in our house! ;-) This is my and Lori's rule of reading a minimum of 10 pages before we hit our emails or social media. You never know what you will read or see that can send your day into a tailspin before it even gets started. This has been a game-changer! We used to do 20-30 minutes…or nothing, but recently realized that even 5-10 minutes is plenty to help visualize our day. Something is always better than nothing. "What matters is the consistency, not the amount of time." Moving my body. This is a staple of my success and every single day, there is at least one block of time where I'm going to get sweaty. After we're done working out, we get home, rinse off, and that marks the end of our "protected time." We start our day. Final words... "Dictate your day and your thoughts." Again, I realize that not everyone has the flexibility in their lives to commit to this same schedule, but aside from the workout, this is roughly a half hour of time that can help you start your day right. Don't leave your day to chance. Wake up earlier, break it into multiple smaller chunks of time throughout the day – just do what you can to control your day. In This Episode We Talk about: Why the first 30 minutes of the day is the best time to sneak in morning rituals Chris' morning rituals Chris and Lori's "protected time" Resources: Now accepting applications for the 2019 For the Love of Money Mastermind. 128: From Welfare to Millionaire and the Tools That Got Him There with Christian Mickelsen
I'm so grateful for all the amazing people I've met through my mastermind with Lewis Howes, and today I'm fortunate enough to talk with another fellow masterminder, Christian Mickelsen. I love diving deeper into his story as he tells us more about being on welfare as a child and how that lack of money made him feel then and how it affected his money mindset later on. Christian obviously overcame that lack mindset and it happened when he realized that he's always been "rich" – just not in the traditional way. He now helps others work through their feelings and fears through his coaching and Abundance Unleased events. This is one of the most empowering conversations I've had to date and I know that his insights will help propel you to the next level of abundance in your life and business. -- Question Highlights: What's your favorite quote? What's one of your superpowers? Who is someone who's changed your life? What's one of your favorite accomplishments? What's one regret you have? Can you tell us a little more about your upbringing? When did you start this journey to go from a poverty mindset to a master of abundance? What are the invisible forces that are holding people back? Is your event based on your book, Abundance Unleashed? How can people go to your event? When and where is it? In This Episode We Talk about: The childhood belief Christian had that when you were poor people didn't like you and when you were rich they did The shift that happened when Christian was able to release emotional ties to things (house, money etc.) How Christian incorporated vision boards into his life The top 4 things that drive Christian in life and business Why it's important to eliminate the invisible forces that hold people back Working through fears and other feelings using the "Peace Process" and the "Instant Miracle" Extreme abundance beliefs Christian's event "Abundance Unleased Live" Why all abundances (love, money, health and time) are related Why desires are here to make us grow And so much more… Christian's Thoughts… "If we want more abundance in our lives, we need to get clear on what we want." "Being alive is rich." "The richest person in the world isn't the person with the most money, it's the person with the most gratitude." "If you want to be rich now, start appreciating what you have now." "Having big goals forces us to become bigger people." 127: A Controversial Lesson to Share
Today's topic may be considered controversial by some and I may get judged for it. On the other hand, some may actually like it and have a breakthrough. Whichever reaction this episode sparks in you, I just want to clarify that my podcast is all about understanding how wealthy people think and giving you alternate ways of thinking when it comes to your views on money and how you want to embrace and pursue it. The following story is just one way to personify how wealthy individuals think and act vs. how the everyday person does. So, Lori and I went surfing this past weekend to recharge. We drove down to the beach, unloaded our boards and proceeded to the parking ticket line. Because it was a weekend, you can imagine the line was long (about 11 people deep from our position). Quickly figuring out that it was taking each person around 5 minutes to get their ticket, I knew I didn't want to waste nearly an hour to get ours. So, I walked over to the ticket attendant and asked what the fine would be if we didn't have a ticket. He said $50. With a ticket price of $15, I made the decision to park the truck without a ticket and pay the extra $35. Why? Simply put, the extra $35 wasn't worth my time. Nor was it worth getting ticked off and potentially putting a damper on our day. "Sometimes rules are just guidelines – depending on what your values are." Now I'm sure there were some people in line that saw me speak to the attendant and then park my car without a ticket, and thought, "what a rich asshole." But the fact of the matter is, I was just making a decision based on the result of my time/money equation. "Is it worth X amount of dollars for me to do Y?" Time is the most valuable thing you have, so use it wisely. I would love to hear your thoughts on this lesson. Please share if you had a breakthrough or if you think I should have followed the rules. I love hearing all perspectives.
