Why do we need female financial advisers?
We've all heard the phrase 'people buy people'. But does this really apply to advising different genders? After all, a great financial adviser can deliver great financial advice to any client, regardless of their gender. But it is also true that there are additional benefits to an advice firm that can be gained by having a more diverse team. Moreover, there are sometimes particular sensitivities that women might face which would mean they are more comfortable with a female financial adviser. Talking to Simoney Kyriakou, senior editor for FTAdviser, for this In Focus podcast are Paula Hodge, chartered financial planner at Old Mill, and Zoe Dagless, senior financial planner for Vanguard Europe, who explain that greater diversity can bring greater strength. How to approach later-life planning
We know there is a gender pay gap - and therefore there is a gender pension gap that needs to be filled. But often we forget that this lack of funding for women in retirement can also lead to a poorer outcome for women needing care in later life. So how can advisers help women get on a better financial footing in retirement? And what is needed to help educate female clients about their financial needs later on in life? Joining Simoney Kyriakou, senior editor of FTAdviser, to discuss these questions is Ben Mason, chief executive of Kinherit; Will Hale, chief executive of Key; and Tish Hanifan, founder of the Society of Later Life Advisers. How central banks will dictate the UK's recovery
The re-opening of pubs and shops, as well as the return of international travel, might make some think the Covid-19 pandemic is moving into history. But the economic impact of the pandemic, and its impact on markets, has not yet fully played out, with the Bank of England yet to raise interest rates from their rock bottom position at 0.1% and the future direction of inflation uncertain as the re-opening of the British economy distorts the picture. This week FTAdviser special projects editor David Thorpe talks to Job Curtis, manager of the City of London investment trust, Gerard Lyons, chief economic strategist at Netwealth, and Stephen Snowden, head of Artemis's fixed income team, to find out what's going on.They discuss the role central banks and fiscal policy will have on the UK's economic recovery, the impact inflation might have and whether UK assets are priced correctly given the associated risks. The FTAdviser Podcast is the weekly podcast for financial advisers, brought to you by FTAdviser. What role do academies have in the future of advice?
The gap between those who need advice and those who can access it - the so-called 'advice gap' - is one of the long-standing conundrums the financial advice profession has faced. For some advice firms, the solution is to encourage more people into the profession to level out the supply and demand imbalance which has led to a surge in the number of advice academies being launched. So what role do these academies - many of which are associated with large, vertically integrated advice firms - have in the future of the advice profession? And what can individual advisers do to help expand the profession? This week FTAdviser senior reporter Sonia Rach is joined by Sarah Lord, president of the Personal Finance Society, and Matt Jordan, academy development manager at Openwork, to find out more about what the industry is already doing and what it could do more of.They discuss the growth of academies in the industry, whether it will help close the advice gap, what the next generation of clients will need and the importance of teaching soft-skills.The FTAdviser Podcast is the weekly podcast for financial advisers, brought to you by FTAdviser. How protection fits into family wealth planning
Speaking on this latest FTAdviser In Focus podcast on the topic of how protection fits into family financial planning, panellists discuss why it is not just important to curate wealth, but also to protect the people bringing that wealth into the household.Tony Mudd, divisional director for tax and technical support at St James's Place; Kathryn Knowles, managing director at Cura Financial Services; and Alun Beynon, head of distribution for intermediary protection at Scottish Widows, tell Simoney Kyriakou, senior editor of FTAdviser, why it is vital to have those conversations about protection when it comes to family wealth planning. And for advisers who are not confident about selling protection, or writing life insurance into trust to help with later life planning, it is important to refer this to advisers who specialise in protection. "Write it, refer it - but do not ignore it" is the overriding message from this podcast. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

The pros and cons of social media for advisers
Last month the Financial Conduct Authority warned that social media platforms were playing an increasing role in putting consumers at risk of harm through adverts for financial products and the rise of financial influencers - or "finfluencers".Advisers aren't immune either, with the regulator expressing concerns that the use of certain social media platforms by advisers wasn't always helping consumers. This week FTAdviser digital editor Damian Fantato is joined by Hugh Johnson, head of proposition delivery at Sanlam, and Alasdair Walker, managing director at HA&W, to discuss what advisers should do about this and whether social media is a good or bad thing for advisers and the wider financial services profession. They discuss whether the FCA is right to be concerned, whether 'finfluencers' are good or bad for the future of financial services, and whether it's important for advisers to put themselves on social media at all.The FTAdviser Podcast is the weekly podcast for financial advisers, brought to you by FTAdviser.
