Cold Case Files: Judge Joseph Force Crater
Joseph Force Crater (January 5, 1889 – disappeared August 6, 1930; declared legally dead June 6, 1939) was a New York State Supreme Court Justice who went missing amid a political scandal. He was last seen leaving a restaurant on West 45th Street in Manhattan and entered popular culture as one of the most mysterious missing persons cases of the twentieth century. Despite massive publicity, the case was never solved and was officially closed forty years after he disappeared. Crater's disappearance fueled public disquiet about New York City corruption and was a factor in the downfall of the Tammany Hall political machine. On today's episode of Shit Out of Luck, we discuss the crimes and capture of New York serial killer Joel Rifkin.Joel Rifkin is a serial killer who went on a string of murders in New York in the 1990s. In 1989, he killed his first woman. He discarded the bodies of his victims so they could not be identified. His reign of terror came to an end in June 1993, when Rifkin was pulled over by the police who discovered a corpse in his car. Hollywood. February 2, 1922. The crime: murder. And what would become one of the biggest scandals to rock early Hollywood. The victim: film director William Desmond Taylor. Known by his friends as Bill. Born in Carlow, Ireland on April 26, 1872. Directing more than 40 films for what is now known as Paramount and working with Tinseltown's brightest stars. Taylor was well-liked, respected, and seen as a leading filmmaker. Taylor himself even starred in one of the first feature films that would define Hollywood and would later serve as President of the Motion Picture Directors Association for several years. The Jeff Davis 8, sometimes called the Jennings 8, refers to a series of unsolved murders in Jefferson Davis Parish, Louisiana. Between 2005 and 2009, the bodies of eight women were found in swamps and canals surrounding Jennings, Louisiana.
