Murder Monday: Gertrude Baniszewski: The Caregiver From Hell

We bring you a new episode of Murder Monday and this week we take a closer look at Gertrude Banizzewski and the murder of Sylvia Likens. The abuse continued throughout the hot summer. However, the abuse seemed to be exclusively on Sylvia. Many believe that this was due to jealousy by Gertrude because of Sylvia’s good looks and potential in life. Many times Sylvia was denied access to the bathroom and was forced to eat garbage out of the trash can among other heinous things. Gertrude even had her very own children get in on the abuse. On one specific occasion, Sylvia was stripped of her clothing and thrown into the basement of the home where she was barely fed and beaten by Gertrude and her children. True Crime: From Guilty Pleasure to High Culture

Today on another episode of the True Crime Never Sleeps podcast, we take a look at the ever-popular true crime genre. If you’re like me, there’s nothing better than settling into the couch after a long day’s work and flipping on the television to Investigation Discovery. Investigation Discovery, or ID, is a cable television network owned by Discovery Communications that features almost exclusively true-crime documentaries. (Mainly murders, with a sprinkling of kidnappings, stalkings, and the ever-favorite “unexplained disappearance.”) It is the televisual Mecca for fans of hardboiled, albeit rather low-rent, crime stories. It’s kitschy and riveting—the ultimate guilty pleasure. Shit Out of Luck: The Capture of Andrei Chikatilo

Andrei Chikatilo was a Soviet serial killer, nicknamed the Butcher of Rostov, the Red Ripper, and the Rostov Ripper, who sexually assaulted, murdered, and mutilated at least fifty-two women and children between 1978 and 1990 in the Russian SFSR, the Ukrainian SSR, and the Uzbek SSR. Chikatilo confessed to fifty-six murders and was tried for fifty-three of them in April 1992. He was convicted and sentenced to death for fifty-two murders in October 1992, although the Supreme Court of Russia ruled in 1993 that insufficient evidence existed to prove his guilt in nine of those killings. Chikatilo was executed in February 1994.  SPONSORS: PodDecks: www.poddecks.com - PromoCode Larry21 for 10% off your order Hunt A Killer: www.huntakiller.com - Promo Code TCNS for 20% off your first box DON'T FORGET TO SUBSCRIBE TO THE PODCAST ON ALL MAJOR PODCAST PLATFORMS. Shit Out of Luck: Capture of Dennis Nilsen

Known in the press as the Muswell Hill Murderer, Scottish-born serial killer Dennis Nilsen tormented young men and boys who lived in the North London area from 1978 to 1983. Nilsen is believed to have murdered at least 12 people, although he confessed to having closer to 15 or 16 victims, many of whom may have been homeless or otherwise vulnerable, according to The Sun. His killing spree began in late 1978, while he was living at 195 Melrose Avenue in North London. Nilsen would often pick up his victims in pubs. He would convince them to come back with him to his home, where he would strangle them, and eventually burn or bury their bodies in the back garden... Dennis Nilsen was sentenced to life imprisonment on six counts of murder and two charges of attempted murder. He remained imprisoned at Full Sutton maximum security prison until his death in 2018. The Assassination of Benazir Bhutto

This week on True Crime Never Sleeps season finale, we dive into the Assassination of Benazir Bhutto, former Prime Minister of Pakistan. On the morning of 27 December 2007, Bhutto met with Afghan President Hamid Karzai. In the afternoon, she gave a speech at a PPP rally held in Rawalpindi's Liaquat National Bagh. On leaving in a bulletproof vehicle, she opened the car's escape hatch and stood up to wave to the surrounding crowds. A man standing within two to three meters of the car fired three gunshots at her and detonated a suicide vest packed with ball bearings. Bhutto was fatally injured; reports differ as to whether she was hit by bullets or by shrapnel from the explosion. Child Star Judith Barsi Murdered by Her Own Father in Horrifying Double Homicide

If you were a child of the 80s, you might remember an animated film called All Dogs Go to Heaven. Its theatrical release in 1989 was overshadowed by The Little Mermaid, which came out on the same day. Nevertheless, the VHS release was a huge success, which is how I came to watch this movie on repeat every Saturday morning growing up. This film is about a fun-loving, fast-talking dog who is murdered by his former friend. Instead of going to Heaven, he cons his way into staying on Earth so that he can avenge his death. Along the way, he teams up with colorful characters, including a sweet orphan girl who teaches him about kindness, friendship, and love. The film’s ending credits song “Love Survives” was dedicated to Judith Barsi, the young actress who played the orphan girl. As a child, I had no idea what this dedication meant. Years later, I was shocked and saddened to learn that All Dogs Go to Heaven was Judith’s last film before she and her mother were murdered by her father in a double murder-suicide.
