Ep: 212 – Lions Next Stop: Training Camp – The Detroit Lions Podcast
In this episode of The Detroit Lions Podcast, Chris is joined by Jeff ‘The Riz’ Risdon for our last look at the Lions before the time of year known as “the dead zone” begins. We found it important to discuss Damon Harrison again, a little making up for our mistake, and a little further look at his situation. We take a listener’s call on the Calvin situation and then clarify a little bit on contracts in the NFL as well. The boys even sneak in some CBA chatter. Next, we touch base on Teez Tabor’s changes, the news about HBO’s Hard Knocks, and some interesting stats about Matthew Stafford. We also discuss a great post about the power of persistence from the subreddit, do a new segment “Pimp My article”, and talk Lions upcoming important dates.
Detroit Lions Podcast Corrects The Record
Chris has to apologize for saying Rosenhaus negotiated Snacks’ current contract. We knew he didn’t but we all brain farted last week when we discussed the situation. We break down what things look like for Harrison and how things may play out. From there we take a Detroit Lions Podcast listener’s call on the Calvin Johnson situation. We weigh in on it a bit and talk about negotiating contracts and where people may be getting hung up when they talk about players’ monetary figures. Additionally, we preview portions of the CBA to be addressed in the next agreement. Its also worth pointing out that current player movements and negotiations may be foreshadowing for what to look for.
Meinke Brings Tabor To Life
Kyle Meinke wrote an excellent article about Teez Tabor and how his life has changed over the last few years, particularly heading into this year. Teez visited an event held by the Detroit Youth Violence Prevention Initiative: The Brotherhood & Sisterhood in a pretty rough section of Detroit and spent some time speaking with kids about life. He spoke about how his circumstances were similar to theirs, how he had come up out of a tough neighborhood, and how he had stumbled along the way. He also talked about how doing the right things can help these kids rise above the situation they were born into, how they can also succeed. Tabor also discussed how it took a long time and a lot of inner reflection to get to where he is today. Working for a new start for himself with the Lions in the NFL. The Detroit Lions Podcast discusses how a lot of credit should go to Tabor, the Lions players, and Lions management for the work they are doing to help confront social injustice. This exemplifies a great effort and a huge push forward that can hopefully make a big impact on a number of young lives. Well written by Meinke, definitely worth a read.
Knocking On A Different Door
From there the Detroit Lions Podcast discuss HBO’s Hard Knocks, some interesting 2018 Matthew Stafford statistics (we sneak a Kelly Stafford update in there too!), and speak to the question from jahvidsanders44 in the Detroit Lions subreddit in which he asks: “Do you think part of the reason for our Super Bowl drought is because we don’t stick to a plan?” A great conversation ensues.

Ep: 211 – Agents Of Lions Frustration – The Detroit Lions Podcast
In this episode of The Detroit Lions Podcast, Chris and Case kick off mandatory mini-camp, discuss Hard Knocks, and dissect the offensive line. We’re also joined by Jeff ‘The Riz’ Risdon to discuss the newly breaking contract dispute with Darius Slay and Damon ‘Snacks’ Harrison.
Detroit Lions Podcast Is Ready For Hard Knocks
We kick it all off with the chatter that won’t go away – HBO’s ‘Hard Knocks’. While we both love and hate the idea of the Lions being featured, in the end we just want an answer. It sounds like it’s down to the Lions and Raiders and we talk about the logic behind HBO picking either one.
We take another look at Teez Tabor and some changes he’s gone through in the last year. He sounds like he has really buckled down and is working on his game harder than ever. We discuss what that mean for him and how the team should assess his performance. It’s not time to give up just yet.
Then the Detroit Lions Podcast opens the book on CJ Anderson and what he means to Detroit’s offense. With Kerryon Johnson’s injury history, it’s good to have a hungry back itching to break out. Anderson brings that to Detroit and even as a “second on the committee” back, he will make a noticeable impact this year. This could be a good year for Anderson and Lions fans, definitely one to watch.
Offensive Lines Aren’t Offensive
Well, the offensive line seems to be locked in at this point. Things could switch up but the Taylor Decker – Kenny Wiggins – Frank Ragnow – Graham Glasgow – Rick Wagner crew seems to have locks on their spots. What does this mean for the team, and its most expensive player, Matthew Stafford? The Detroit Lions Podcast breaks it down.
After that we discuss Calvin Johnson, he’s back in Lions news – and it’s not hugs and cuddles. He’s put a price on hugs and snuggles with Lions – likely over the market rate. We go over the situation, and even wind up with a caller who brings the conversation to an excellent conclusion.
Contracting Something Ugly
Lastly we are joined by Jeff Risdon to discuss the week’s big news, Darius Slay and Damon Harrison not showing up at mandatory mini-camp. This is both frustrating and depressing for Lions fans, and it is likely for Slay and Snacks as well. We talk about why there are likely different motivations for the players, but a single reason why. We also do a little role playing, and devil’s advocating around the impasse in an effort to provide perspective. In the end we want it all to work out in the best way possible for all involved parties.

Ep: 210 – Lions Looking Good In Shorts – The Detroit Lions Podcast
In this episode of The Detroit Lions Podcast, Chris is joined by Jeff ‘The Riz’ Risdon to break down the first week in OTAs, have some Hock talk, discuss the broader Lions offensive plans, analyze the CB position, and more!
Detroit Lions Podcast OTA Report
Out of the gate we dive in to what we learned about the team in their first weeks of OTAs. There was a lot to look at and learn from this team. Tim Twentyman gives us 5 takeaways from week one and we walk through them and what they mean for the team.
We take a look at first round draft pick T.J. Hockenson’s performance so far. The Riz talks about what he means to the team and how he can really help Matthew Stafford in a place where he badly needs it.
Then the Detroit Lions Podcast takes a look at Darrell Bevell’s offensive strategy and some of the tenants of the offense that he’s bringing. One thing for sure, they look to be leaning on the defense to win games more than the offense, and that will be different for a lot of fans. Seeing who can accept it and how the team can execute will be one of the stories of the 2019 football season. It makes sense, but definitely leaves us with questions. Is the time right to go against the passing grain in the NFL? Do we have the personnel to execute? What the heck do “shots down field” look like in 2019? There is much here to discuss through camp and into the season.
No Clear Corners
Darius Slay is still looking for someone to play on the other side of the field from him. It feels better to have Justin Coleman in the slot, but will he line up as the Lions cb2? Questions remain about Quandre Diggs and Jamal Agnew – where will they line up? And of course, Ford, Oruwariye, and Tabor are all still open questions. The Detroit Lions Podcast takes a stab at how things might shake out and why.
We spend some time discussing Kelly Stafford and her progress after brain surgery. She shared another update and continues to spark hope for a full recovery. She discusses the mental difficulty that comes with some of the effects so far and how it will take up to 12 months to find out if there are any permanent symptoms as a result. We continue to hope and pray for her full recovery – we know she’s going to use her experience to help others, and often, providing hope is key.
Matthew Stafford Humiliates Aaron Rodgers Again
She also shared a video of Matthew Stafford absolutely humiliating Aaron Rodgers in the realm of beer chugging. I’m certain that Aaron would have run to hide in the locker room again if he had the chance after being humiliated by Matthew twice in the last 6 months. The story is a little old, but still worth having fun with on the first Detroit Lions Podcast since it happened.

Ep: 209 – Lions OTAs Underway – The Detroit Lions Podcast
In this episode of The Detroit Lions Podcast, Chris and Case break down the first day of OTAs for the Lions in 2019. We talk about positional movements, listen to player quotes, discuss Taste of the Lions, provide an update on Kelly Stafford, and last, but certainly not least, are joined by Jeff ‘The Riz’ Risdon to get his report from day 1 of OTAs!
The Detroit Lions Podcast Has You Covered
First, we hit the high points of the Lions last two weeks in ‘This Week In Reddit’ and help provide insights on everything that happened on the week we took off. We have solid audio from Matthew Stafford about how things went today and which areas they are focusing on at the beginning of camp. We also discuss some positional movements that weren’t a surprise, and should have been expected.
The Detroit Lions Podcast also discusses who isn’t in camp. Should fans should be worried? We also have a discussion about our old gal Suh being signed by the Bucs in Tampa.
We spend some time discussing Kelly Stafford and her progress after brain surgery. She shared another update and it was amazing. She went to a friend’s wedding and looked no worse for the wear. Kelly articulates some of the struggles she’s had as she works through her recovery from surgery. We are inspired by the excellent progress she’s made already.
Getting A Taste Of The Lions
The Detroit Lions Podcast then bounces in on Taste of the Lions. We cover the great stuff that happened there, including naming Chris’s undercover +1. We then move on to key upcoming dates in the Lions schedule.

Ep: 208 – Lions Case Study: TJ Hockenson – The Detroit Lions Podcast
In this episode of The Detroit Lions Podcast, Chris and Case break down the Detroit Lions first round 2019 NFL draft pick. We walk through the areas in which we believe TJ Hockenson could help this team as well as key areas to watch in training camp and the preseason. We also spend some time discussing Jahlani Tavai, Kelly Stafford, and more!
Detroit Lions Podcast Case Study
First, in this Case Study we catalog the TJ Hockenson pick and the many ways in which he helps this Lions team. We analyze this from a number of perspectives including value, scheme, ability, and more. Finally, we cover areas of risk and how to mitigate them. This is a good in-depth conversation about the 2019 Lions first round draft pick.
The Detroit Lions Podcast also discusses Jahlani Tavai, who the Lions nabbed in the second round. We don’t go nearly as deep as we did with Hockenson, but we take a look at what he brings. We also discuss why he was taken where he was, and the information that Chris received during the draft itself.
Prayers For Kelly
We spend a little time discussing Kelly Stafford and her progress after brain surgery. She shared another update and while things are moving slower than anyone wants, there’s a lot to celebrate with her situation. We still wish her the very best in her recovery and will be following closely.

Ep: 207 – Lions Draft Reflections – The Detroit Lions Podcast
In this episode of The Detroit Lions Podcast, Chris and Case and Jeff Risdon bring you the first takes on the Lions performance during the draft. A few different opinions, and a look at how the Lions fared against their peers in the division.
Detroit Lions Podcast Draft Reflections
The show this week is commercial free – no breaks for sponsors, just straight Lions football content from the starting gun. Please use the links at the bottom of this page to help support the show in the meantime!
Starting out we break down the T.J. Hockenson pick and weigh the positives and negatives of the pick. We also discuss some of the common fan and Twitter reactions. The Detroit Lions Podcast is satisfied with the pick and with a quick listen we bet you’ll agree.
The Lions second round pick stunned many people, and was considered a reach by many others. There are some reports that Jahlani Tavai was at the top of the board for a pair of other teams and the Lions felt it was time to move on him. Worry not, we’ll help you understand how to feel about this pick.
Round 3 was an absolute head-scratcher for all but a very few folks. We take a look at this pick and discuss why it may be a defining pick for the Bob Quinn regime.
Draft Wrap And A Fifth Round Gem
We’ll go through the rest of the picks in this episode of the Detroit Lions Podcast and a couple of Undrafted Free Agents to help put the cherry on top. A real highlight of a pick happened in the 5th round when the Lions picked up cornerback Amani Oruwariye at #146 overall. This one garnered a lot of discussion and for us it was no different.
Lastly, we aren’t real big on draft grades. With that in mind, we compare the offseason work of the Lions against their division rivals. We also determine which teams got better and where. As always, the Detroit Lions Podcast has you covered for the draft this year and we have a whole lot more to come.

Ep: 206 – Lions 2019 NFL Draft Last Stand – The Detroit Lions Podcast
In this episode of The Detroit Lions Podcast, Chris and Case bring you the last stop before the draft. We are joined by Tony Ortiz and Jeff Risdon to break down where the Detroit Lions might be looking in the draft. Two different opinions, and two good draft models play out before you.
Detroit Lions Podcast Draft Party
We begin the show with the boys talking about the draft party. It’s the best way to not have to leave your house and still get amazing draft coverage. Everything you might need will be available on the DetroitLionsPodcast.com live draft stream. You don’t want to miss it.
The next big topic is to walk down the list of the top #1 draft picks from the last 52. We have a pretty good discussion, but are constantly hamstrung by the caveat that this is only about #1 draft picks. It makes for an interesting discussion and one in which the rules really do matter.
From there we discuss Kelly Stafford’s situation as we know it. We have an emotional investment in her progress and success, so we will continue to follow this story. The Staffords are an amazing family, you can’t help but wish them the very best.
Then we move on to our St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital fund raiser. Holy cow, you people are amazing. We’ve made great progress and continue to work toward raising money for a worthy and amazing cause. The auction is on fire, and time is running out. Get in there before you lose your chance to get something amazing. Come to http://DetroitLionsPodcast.com and make your donation, bid in the auction, or pick up a shirt where $1 from each sale will go to St. Jude. We have until the end of the month to push this over the top – help us get there!
Tony Ortiz Is The Hero We Need
At that point, the boys are sick of each other, so they bring super hero Tony Ortiz to make his last stand and put his stake into the ground for the draft. Tony is amazing as usual and makes some very good cases for his draft choices. He earns some walk off music as a result. Tony will always be in our hearts.
Ever heard of that Riz guy? Yeah, he darkens our doorway once again with his last stand. He makes all kinds of crazy predictions on how the draft may play out. We were on board until he picked Barry Sanders in the 4th round, then we knew he was drunk… Well, the opposite of that happened, but we need to see the “Riz was wrong” segment for the future…

Ep: 204 – Pre-draft Lions With Co-host Dean Blandino – The Detroit Lions Podcast
In this episode of The Detroit Lions Podcast, @DeanBlandino joins Chris while Case gets away for a week. We also bring The Riz, Jeff Risdon on board to talk about breaking Lions news. A lot going on this week, so let’s get into it…
Detroit Lions Podcast Co-host Dean Blandino
We begin the show with a surprise co-host, Dean Blandino joining Chris to break down the latest Lions news. Dean is a natural fit for our first topic, the changes to the NFL rules that came from last week’s League/Owners’ Meeting. He brings the right level of insight to what we can expect and what to worry about as a result of the changes – we also put it in context of the Lions and what it means for us directly. Dean also shares with us how the NFL will communicate their initial interpretation of the new rules as well as how things will evolve over the season. Great insight to a yearly occurrence that will have bigger impact in the 2019 season.
Dean also makes a $500 pledge to the Detroit Lions Podcast St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital fund raiser on the fly. Come to http://DetroitLionsPodcast.com and make your donation, or pick up a shirt on the site, where $1 from each sale will go to St. Jude.
From there we discuss the CJ Anderson signing and what Dean thinks it means to the team. CJ has a lot to bring and his attitude out of the gate should strike fear into the hearts of our rival defensive linemen. This is a pickup that should mean a lot to the Lions run game that needed a ton of help in 2018.
Who’s Ready For The Lions On ‘Hard Knocks’?
Next up is a conversation about Hard Knocks, a little about the selection process and how the Lions can stay away. Dean also talks to the Detroit Lions Podcast about what it means to the team from various angles. We get some great insight around Bob Quinn at this part of the show as well…
It’s that time of year, time to get ready for our 3rd annual NFL Draft Party! We give you the info you need to prepare for the best place to hang out and get your Lions draft chat and analysis in addition to hearing from some of your favorite guests. Don’t forget, we’ll be taking your calls during the whole affair as well. We also let the cat out of the bag on our 3rd Annual Detroit Lions Training Camp Party! Tentatively scheduled for August 3rd this year, we have declared the daytime training camp period to be Zach Zenner day. Then, as the sun goes down, we’ll kick off the party. We’ll do a live broadcast from the event with great door prize drawings, and (of course) very specials guests. Get yourself ready, it is going to be a blast!
The Riz Returns
We close things out with Jeff Risdon. He weighs in with the Detroit Lions Podcast just hours after the CJ Anderson pickup and takes us on a deep draft run where he discusses the top positional prospects that belong in the top 10 in the draft. It’s a great look at things from a “big board” perspective.
Don’t miss the show close, Dean has a hilarious pants-free story!

Ep: 203 – Detroit Lions Patricia Bites – The Detroit Lions Podcast
In this episode of The Detroit Lions Podcast, Chris and Case continue to their drive to $10K for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. We also have Matt Patricia for breakfast, Discuss the Lions top needs, bring in the Riz to discuss the first three rounds of the draft, and take you ‘Around The Division’ with an advance look at new music from the soon to drop I Prevail album which comes out March 29th!
Detroit Lions Podcast Owns It
We begin the show with Chris eating crow. He blew it on Malcolm Brown and takes full ownership, well… He takes you all down with him. Then the conversation begins with new Lions pickup Tommy Lee Lewis and what happened as a result of last week’s conversation and Reddit user/Twitter friend Honolulu Blue Balls response.
From there we delve into Matt Patricia’s interview at the Owners’ Meeting breakfast today. He spent just about an hour after breakfast talking to reporters and answering everything they threw his way. There were even jokes at Kyle Meinke and Michael Rothstein’s expense. We’re going to have to check in with Justin Rogers on the effect of these to get the appropriate color commentary. We bring you the key clips from the interview and react/respond with our take on the insights that Coach Patricia provides. There is a ton to unpack, and we may carry our conversation into next week on this as we think more about it.
Of course we discuss our drive to 10K for St. Jude. Please be sure to tell anyone you know about this effort and take part if you haven’t. Seriously, do everything you can to amplify the sound on this. We need everyone to know and everyone we can find to take part.
Bring On The Riz
From there we get Jeff Risdon on the phone. The Riz is his inimitable self and kills it as usual. We have a hilarious and enjoyable conversation that covers the Lions key needs ahead of the draft, what the Lions will be looking at during the draft (Chris declares rounds 2 and three complete pants off moments), and he helps take us ‘Around The Division’ where we share a new intro from the soon to be released Trauma album from I Prevail. Chris is massively in love with the song used here, “Rise Above It”. This isn’t a sponsorship, these are friends. We genuinely love this band, and Trauma is over-the-top amazing.

Ep: 202 – Detroit Lions Free Agency Files ft. Tony Ortiz – The Detroit Lions Podcast
In this episode of The Detroit Lions Podcast, Chris and Case continue to their drive to $10K for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. We also discuss Free Agency, bring an angle on Matthew Stafford that you haven’t heard anywhere else, talk about needs for the NFL Draft, and bring on Tony Ortiz, a longtime multi-talented Lions specialist straight off the radio in Detroit.
Detroit Lions Podcast Back On The Attack
We begin the show talking about new Lions pickup Tommy Lee Lewis. After Chris makes the obligatory Pamela Anderson joke we take a look at what he might bring to the team and where he may be lacking. Also, the Malcolm Brown offer breaks while we are recording and we hit that one a little later in the show.
From there Chris brings up a thought process on Matthew Stafford that you haven’t heard anywhere else. It’s an interesting take on how he might be thinking about his career, where his head is at, and what might weigh on his thinking when contract time comes around. Don’t freak out, but it’s another set of data that certainly will weigh in on his decision-making process. This is another time where we think beyond the standard fare on the Detroit Lions Podcast.
Of course we discuss our drive to 10K for St. Jude. Please be sure to tell anyone you know about this effort and take part if you haven’t.
Next we go into draft mode and discuss the concept of “trading down” and what it would take. We also break down why we might, how we might, and what it might cost based upon different scenarios.
Addressing The Lions Biggest Need
It was then time to talk about the CB2 position. It’s the talk of the town and the most glaring need for the team at this point. The Detroit Lions Podcast discusses who is available, what they might mean to the team, and how this could wind up playing out for the Lions.
We are then pleased to bring Tony Ortiz onto the show. He is an amazing guest that brings some really fresh thinking to how the Lions might be positioning the team and how they may position the players they’ve picked up and where the Lions may be focusing in the draft. Tony is a welcome addition to the Detroit Lions Podcast.
