121: What Do You Want?

Do you ever question your self-worth or needs? Do you ever downplay your gifts, your abilities, or your successes? It can be so hard to own your talents and live fully and freely in them. Simultaneously, it can be a challenge to voice our needs to those around us. Today I'm deep-diving into a conversation that originated from a question my own coach asked me. My coach, Natalie K. Miller, host of the Mind Witchery podcast, asked me recently, "When did you stop believing that you needed things?" This led me into some deep self-exploration and realization that I'm going to share with you today. For full show notes visit www.cathymazak.com/episode121.

119: The Danger of the Twin Scarcities [book excerpt]

Have you ever struggled to reconcile the realities of needing both time and money, and never feeling like you have enough of it? The Twin Scarcities refer to the scarcities of time and money. As academics, the idea of these things being scarce has been ingrained in us from the start of our careers and continues to stay with us as we navigate both our working and personal worlds. In episode 119 of the podcast, listen as I read an excerpt from chapter 2 of my new book coming out, Making Time to Write. The chapter's title is "The Danger of the Twin Scarcities" and I dive into the nuances of the aspects of time and money and how they play a large role in how and why we work and write the way we do. I hope you'll gain some insight into your own writing life and will take the time to dissect your own relationship with these twin scarcities as it relates to how you make time to write. 116: Fear of Visibility

Today's episode is all about fear… specifically my fear. I wanted to be vulnerable and super honest with you all about some fears I have had around publishing my book (coming out in stores in late August). The amount of fear involved in the process of writing this book has been so much more than writing anything else. I really wanted to talk about the fear we have around writing that is related to the fear of being more visible in the world. For full show notes visit www.cathymazak.com/episode116.

115: Public Scholarship with Epidemiologist Dr. Becky Dawson

Today my guest is epidemiologist Dr. Becky Dawson, and we are exploring "getting public": public scholarship, putting yourself out there, communicating your scholarship to a wider audience. She has really leaned into the "public" of her field, public health. We talk about how Covid19 shoved Becky into a very public spotlight, and how she has continued to develop that public voice through doing facebook lives, blogging, continuing TV appearances, and working with community members on public health. We will also get into the painful side of taking your scholarship public, where you are open to criticism and critique. For full show notes, visit www.cathymazak.com/episode115.

114: International Women's Day: It's Complicated

Today is International Women's Day and we wanted to host a conversation about the day because… it's complicated! I'm chatting with coach Rocío Caballero-Gill, and we wanted to have a candid thoughtful chat about international Women's Day, what it means to focus on women specifically in academia, and how this company has changed over the last 5 years with respect to developing our programs through a lens of gender equity and inclusion. Rocío shares her work developing a professional organization called GeoLatinas and we talk about the difference between including and welcoming. For full show notes, visit cathymazak.com/episode114.

113: Working with Self Compassion

How hard are you on yourself? Do you find yourself constantly judging yourself for the ways that you think you fall short? If you've never experienced a virtual writing retreat I think you might be surprised how effective it is. There are so many upsides to a virtual writing retreat, and we really had a great time. The theme of the event was compassionate accountability, emphasizing compassion, self appreciation, dealing with rejection, and pouring into yourself. We decided that this workshop that coach Thea presented was too good not to share with the world! So today we present, "Working with Self Compassion," delivered by Thea, one of our coaches. Enjoy!
