Do you ever feel like you have too many projects or publications in play at once? Too many things in the works, and then ultimately nothing actually gets published? Most academics believe that to publish more things, they have to publish everything. In this Bonus Episode, I talk all about a huge misconception in academic publishing: that more equals more. I'm here to show you a new way of being when it comes to publishing, and how less is actually more in the long run. When we take a 'just publish anything and everything' mentality, we really lose cohesion. When you have your academic mission statement, and everything is in line with that, then your publication pipeline flows much more freely. Publishing off-mission articles, and things that aren't in line with your academic mission are actually going to stop your on-mission articles from coming out. Knowing what is worth your time and focusing on those things really does equal more in your academic career. If you've been following along with us, you know that we are currently enrolling for a 12 week pilot version of our core program, which is called Navigate Your Writing Roadmap. We are looking for women and non binary professors at any career stage who have published at least one article in a peer reviewed journal, and you have too much data for the amount of time that you have to write it up. Or you're sitting on three or more article drafts in various stages of done, one of which is almost (around 50%-80%) done. We also are looking for professors who are looking for an accelerated way to clear their publication pipeline. We have been looking to update our original Navigate program, so we decided to take that core Navigate content and make it fit into 12 weeks by using the criteria that we want from the original course. Our goal for the Pilot program is for it to be both simple and impactful, the 2 words we are using to guide all of our decisions for our company this year. That means that those participating in this pilot are going to get more attention from more people in the company as we really try to tweak and perfect this program. What is that next level thing that's down the road that you're not getting to by staying in old habits that are leading to burnout or old habits that aren't serving you? We have been raised inside of our academic institutions with models that only include success through overwork or success through burnout. Inside of this culture that glorifies busyness, it's easy to understand why we don't really believe that we can have a sustainable academic career. Have you tried several things in order to get the spaciousness you desire in your career? You might be trying to make sure you have the publication results that you know you need in order to keep hitting your goals and to keep making your impact on your field and in the world. People try a lot of things in order to hit these goals, but in order to design a career that you love and serves you best, you need to get clear on what exactly that career looks like for you. In this bonus episode, I share a technique that you can use to start to shift away from the cultural norms inside of academia and do something counterintuitive. The technique asks you to think of three adjectives you would use to describe your career if you could have it your way. Choosing 3 adjectives to describe your career is a great first step in designing a career you love and that has longevity. Using those 3 adjectives, ask yourself what that kind of professor would do. In this bonus episode, we'll dive into something that might seem the opposite of what you've been believing all of this time: your publishing problem is not time.
