Originally aired August 19, 2024 Our stories today are part of a larger arc that started with the most popular residents of the Village, Marmalade the Cat, and her little brother, Crumb the Dog. I’d set out to just tell the next part of their story, but found a spark that would eventually lead to love. First comes Raining Cats and Dogs, where we can listen to the thunder, shuffle around the house in the dim, stormy light, and contemplate plans for the day. Then we’ll hear Old Friends, a story about a day spent watching movies on the couch, a greyhound in a yellow rain slicker, and a fresh cup of coffee with a bit of sugar stirred in. Finally, we’ll follow the mail carrier through the neighborhood as he delivers special missives with LOVE stamps in RSVP. We’ll start with In the Kitchen, During a Storm, as the wind picks up and the Pomodoro sauce simmers on the stove. This story, by the way, mentions alcohol, in case that doesn’t work for you and you need to skip it. Then we’ll put the river on our left and roll down the windows as we visit The Turnaround; we’ll look out at the lighthouses and creep close to the shore to listen to the water lap at the rocks. Finally, we’ll follow the call of a summer evening out to the park where a memory, long forgotten, arises in Someplace Only We Know. Our stories today take us through some ways folks in the Village are spending their days and evenings in the early summer. We’ll start by laying the table under the string lights in the garden and pulling up chairs with friends in The Dinner Bell. Then we’ll see where the night takes us, from the park to the lot on the edge of town, with bubbles and blankets in at The Drive-In. First in Wind and Wildflowers, we’ll hike the trail behind the house, listen for woodpeckers, and watch the grasses sway in the wind. Then in Rain and Shine, we’ll finish up some work in the garden, take a long hot shower, and eat dinner on the porch, as the storm rolls in. Finally, in Hummingbird, after a good night’s sleep, we’ll step outside with a glass of iced coffee and meet the morning and any visitors coming to breakfast from the flowers.
