The Level Up English Podcast
Michael Lavers
🇬🇧 I'm Michael Lavers and this podcast will help you improve your English. I'm an online English teacher for students learning as a second language. In this podcast, I look at a variety of different fun topics and teach you British English at the same time. Each week, I cover topics related to language motivation, vocabulary and grammar, or something totally random! Once a month, we have a guest episode where I talk to a teacher or expert on topics related to language.

#188 England and America's Cultural Differences
Today, I decided to do a more casual and relaxed episode since I'm still a bit ill at the time of recording. I discuss my own experiences of the USA and some of the culture shocks I had during my 3-week trip there. I discuss these differences from my own point of view and how this is reflected in the language too.I should say, I feel like I sounded a bit negative towards America. If that's the case, it was not intended! I love the US and the American people. Here's the YouTube video I mentioned in the episode: https://youtu.be/gKEPecsTD0EShow notes page - https://levelupenglish.school/podcast188Sign Up for Free Lessons - https://www.levelupenglish.school/#freelessonsJoin Level Up English - https://courses.levelupenglish.schoolBy becoming a member, you can access all podcast transcripts, listen to the private podcast and join live lessons and courses on the website.Have a question? #185 Implied Meaning in English
As you might know, English isn't like how we find it in textbooks. In day-to-day conversations, we often don't speak in full sentences, and so much of what we say is implied (this means, it's hinted at without actually saying it).In this episode, I look at some examples of implied meaning or 'language ambiguity' and teach some phrases you can use in different situations.Show notes page - https://levelupenglish.school/podcast185Sign Up for Free Lessons - https://www.levelupenglish.school/#freelessonsJoin Level Up English - https://courses.levelupenglish.schoolBy becoming a member, you can access all podcast transcripts, listen to the private podcast and join live lessons and courses on the website.Have a question? In this episode, I talk a bit about space, humanity, Elon Musk, and answer the question of whether humans should move to Mars in the future. I love this topic and I hope you do too. #182 TV Series to Improve Your British English (Part 2)
I spoke about 14 TV shows to improve your British English in episode 22 of the podcast.Since then, I've got a lot of requests to make a Part 2. To be honest, I don't watch much TV so I struggle to make a good list. Of the TV series I do watch, many of them aren't good examples of British English (or even English in general, such as 'Vikings'!)My general advice is, rather than watching something that will improve your English, just watch something that you enjoy. Enjoyment should always come first.Having said that, if you're not sure where to start, here are some ideas that you may enjoy.Show notes page - https://levelupenglish.school/podcast182Sign Up for Free Lessons - https://www.levelupenglish.school/#freelessonsJoin Level Up English - https://courses.levelupenglish.schoolBy becoming a member, you can access all podcast transcripts, listen to the private podcast and join live lessons and courses on the website.Have a question? #180 Things That Annoy Us
Welcome back to another Saturday episode! In today's episode, I'm reacting to another Reddit post on /AskReddit which was "What things p*** you off the most?" (that's another way of saying "What annoys you most?")In this episode, I read out some of my favourite things and talk about why they annoy me! #179 Overweight Children... (An IELTS Writing Question)
A listener requested I respond to an IELTS Writing Part 2 question in an episode, but rather than answer the question in the exam style, I'm allowed to ramble on in my usual way and discuss both sides of the question. The idea here is that it might help you become clear on how you can answer similar questions for yourself. Even if you're not taking the exam, it might be interesting to hear my thoughts on this difficult topic! What do you think about it?Show notes page - https://levelupenglish.school/podcast179Sign Up for Free Lessons - https://www.levelupenglish.school/#freelessonsJoin Level Up English - https://courses.levelupenglish.schoolBy becoming a member, you can access all podcast transcripts, listen to the private podcast and join live lessons and courses on the website.Have a question?
