Admission Tips, Admission Trends & Admission InterviewsAdmission Interviews
Our mission is to "make college knowledge available to all." Each Thursday, the "Your College-Bound Kid" podcast will discuss a hot college topic in the news; we will answer a question or two that listeners send in, we will interview a "thought leader" in the world of college admissions, and do a "deep-dive," we call Spotlights on a College. Every Monday, we have a second episode to discuss a "hot topic" and interview a "thought leader" in the admissions or college life world. YCBK combines "in-depth knowledge" with a light, easy-to-listen conversational style. We have eight co-hosts, six college counselors, and two current admissions officers, including an Admissions Dean

YCBK 231: Advice from College Admissions Deans-Part 2
In this episode you will hear: (05:30) Julia Esquivel makes her debut as one of our co-hosts in our monthly rotation for our "In the News" segment. Mark and Julia discuss a Washington Post article by Valerie Strauss entitled, "Advice from College Admissions Deans". We discussed this article on #194 but we said we would return to it. Julia picked out three quotes from the article from admissions deans that resonated with her and Mark and Julia discuss them. https://www.washingtonpost.com/education/2019/09/26/truth-about-college-admissions-college-admissions-deans/ (37:56) Diana from Wisconsin sent us an outstanding list of questions that are all designed to get some guidance about the transition to college. Mark and Lisa acknowledge that the transition to college is an area that we haven't adequately covered. Mark and Lisa answered half of Diana's questions in episode and they answer the other half here in episode 231. 1) Thanksgiving break- we found that plane tickets for Thanksgiving break were sky-high in price and the remaining school year after break was so short, it was almost not worth it to have her come home for break. In retrospect, we kind of wish we had not set the expectation to have her come home for Thanksgiving, as it was short and stressful. 2) Safety and crime on campus - does the campus have an emergency alert system that students can sign up for text alerts for? Can parents sign up also? 3) how often should we talk on the phone together? Should we have a weekly call? How often will we be in touch with each other? (01:01:10) Our interview is with Karen Kristof, a 30+ year admission veteran who has worked at five colleges. Karen is the Dean of admissions at Colorado College. Karen addresses three different topics over for three consecutive Thursdays. In last week's episode Karen answered the question, how do colleges evaluate a transcript. This week she answers the question: Preview-How admissions officers evaluate a high school Karen shares how a college uses the School Profile to understand each high school Karen talks about how they evaluate a student who is at a poor high school How do you evaluate a student who is at a school with a lot of really high achievers Can they tell if a school has grade inflation or grade deflation We discuss reading by school group (01:13:42) The recommended resource is the website: https://www.universitystudy.ca/ Explore Canadian universities and programs of study. Recommended first place to start for researching Canadian universities. (01:30:30) Our College Spotlight is The University of Michigan, Part 2 of 2 with Lisa Please send in your questions either on Twitter at @YCBKpodcast using the Messages tab (this is our preference) or via email at Questions@yourcollegeboundkid.com for the 26 admissions interviews we are doing in the summer and fall. I have listened to it three times in the last three months. I strongly recommend the audiobook which is informative and entertaining: The name of the book is, "Valedictorians at the Gate: Standing Out, Getting In, and Staying Sane While Applying to College" by Rebecca Munsterer Sabky, Eliza Foss. Sabky did admissions at Dartmouth for 13 years. Her honesty about the business side of admissions is refreshing and enlightening. YCBK 227: Is telling our kids to follow their passions bad advice?
In this episode you will hear: Susan Tree, Mark's former colleague and friend for over 20 years makes her debut as an official co-host. (15:45) Susan and Mark discuss a GrownandFlown.com article entitled, "We need to rethink encouraging our teens to follow your passions". The article was written by Annie Reneau on April 13, 2021 Susan shares the history over the last 40 years of how several books have attempted to address the issue of whether a student should follow their passions. Mark and Susan give their take on the article. (55:56) Questions from a listener-I have a college sophomore and a high school senior so I have gone through the process twice - it is exhausting! I have two questions: 1) In searching for colleges, we looked at rankings depending on what the student's area of study was (business, film, animation, international relations, etc.) The rankings we found were Poets & Quants Undergrad, Hollywood Reporter, Animation Review, and Foreign Policy. I had heard about US News, but not the other rankings - how can we determine if they are truly industry valid rankings? I know rankings don't dictate success, but the search has to start somewhere, and it is just one more data point. 2) It was very difficult and at times impossible to find acceptance rates for a specific school within a university. For example - NYU Tisch, LMU Film & TV, Villanova undergrad business, and Georgetown SFS. Is there a way to find out? The acceptance rate for each school/program can vary greatly from the whole of the university. Thank you so much!! Maria from Pennsylvania (01:17:17) Interview-Rod Skinner, the Dean of College Counseling at Milton Academy-Topic "Why is it so much harder to get into a selective college these days"- (Part 3 of 3) Preview-Part 3/3 One means of getting people off a fixation with one school What parent can do to help their kids have positive mental health while going through the college process The importance of parents having this one skill when working with their kids More great advice for parents is shared Rod recommends a book and shares an amazing quote The importance of relationships with parents The lightning round, Rod goes on the hotseat Sage wisdom for college counselors, students and parents (01:27:37) Our recommended resource for episode 227 is the website ctas.substack.com. The website tracks trends in applications and the cost of college. They have cutting edge data here that is rarely found anywhere else.
