How to hedge your portfolio during market volatility
If you're going to spend a lot of money on something, investors are going to want to eventually see returns. That's the case in Big Tech, where tech giants are spending billions of dollars on building AI products, but have yet to show the sort of result investors have been hoping for.In this episode of Stocks In Translation, Yahoo Finance's markets and data editor Jared Blikre, along with Yahoo Finance producer Sydnee Fried, are joined by Trent Smalley, investment adviser and portfolio manager at JSPM LLC. They discuss Big Tech's big capital expenditures and growing investor frustration with it. They also explore the concept of hedging, an investment strategy designed to minimize the risk of adverse price movements in an asset. The conversation also delves into the summer fluctuations in the stock markets, highlighting the unwinding of the yen carry trade that led to a huge market sell-off earlier in the month.Blikre and the team also offer investment strategies tailored for younger investors and discuss the suitability of the 60-40 strategy. “I would… think of themes that will be present throughout somebody’s lifetime,” says Smalley. “Technology will be there. Healthcare and the aging population will be there… Staples will be there."Find more episodes of Stocks in Translation here.Thoughts? Questions? Fan mail? Is the S&P 500 really a diversified index anymore?
In this episode of Stocks In Translation, Yahoo Finance markets and data editor Jared Blikre examines market concentration — when only a few stocks in an index or investor portfolio account for most of the gains.Joined by Yahoo Finance's Sydnee Fried and The Lead-Lag Reports publisher Michael Gayed, the group dives into the debate over the narrow bull market. “It’s debatable as to whether the S&P 500 is really a diversified index anymore,” adds Gayed. “When you’ve got a select number of stocks that are diving the entire momentum play across the board.” Gayed provides a path to diversification for passive, index-only investors and explores Consumer Price Index metrics and how stock market and real estate inflation can affect the trading algorithms that move the market on a day-to-day basis.Bilkre and crew also discuss zombie companies, the Pareto Principle, and Japan’s influence on last week’s volatility. “The carry trade has been going on for years. You don’t resolve that in 48 hours,” adds Gayed.Find this episode's transcripts and more episodes of Stocks in Translation at https://finance.yahoo.com/videos/series/stocks-in-translationThoughts?
