311: Three Simple Steps to Your STRONGEST Golf in 2021

As we move into February, it’s safe to say that most of the New Year’s resolutions that millions of golfers set at the start of 2021 are dead or have pretty much fizzled to more of a smolder rather than the burning hot desire of change that often accompanies the excitement of a New Year. But is that really how it has to be? Are you really willing to just slip back into the old routines and wait for another year to pass, then look back and wish you had done something different? Why wait? The golf season hasn’t even started yet and many golfers have already given up on their “off-season” plans to make this year different. Well, here is the good news. You can be different than those millions of golfers. You can make this the STRONGEST year of golf you have ever had and today, I’m going to share 3 of the biggest “secrets” that can make that happen for you. (HINT: they are really very common sense, but since the execution of them are rare, it makes people feel better if they think it’s a secret they didn’t know about ) And for the record, these are not just recommendations, or conceptual tactics, these are the exact principles we used with a small, very private group of golfers that we worked with in 2020 that got more incredible results than I have ever personally seen in a 12 week time, including weight loss, strength, club head speed, ability to walk and carry, and most importantly a new found (or re-kindled) enjoyment of the game. 3 Simple Steps to Your STRONGEST Golf: To get the more detailed descriptions of each, listen to the full episode, but here are some of the cliff notes and resources mentioned. 310: Blair Wheeler: An 11-Handicap documenting his golf journey because it “Sucks to Suck.”

Blair Wheeler is not a PGA tour pro or coach, sports psychologist or fitness professional, but Blair is a guy like us . . . just a regular dude working on his golf game, except there is one difference . . . Blair is what is known as a “golf influencer” and makes part of his living working with incredible brands like PXG, incredible coaches and buddying up with PGA pros to not only play some golf but also see their workout routines, al despite having a HC index of 11.2. It was fun (and very familiar) to talk to Blair about the journey that he is on, just like many of us, to become the golfer that he wants to be while also having a job and kids and not having the time commitment of a tour player. A lot of times we relate the things that we talk about on this show or in golf magazines with the vision of what the tour pro is doing and what they do to get better, but what about us? 306: Kye Goalby: Behind the Scenes Making Amazing Golf Courses

In this episode, we have Kye Goalby, who is one of the world’s most sought after golf course shaper/designer. And I’m not talking about just any golf courses, I’m talking about some of the top courses in the world like Ballyneal, Sebonack, Pasatiempo, Oakland Hills, Old MacDonald, and many more. So today we are going to be talking about what makes a golf course 18STRONG? Shaping and designing golf courses is in many ways a behind-the-scenes kind of profession. In fact, one of Kye’s proudest achievements is when a golfer can’t even tell that he was ever there. We often hear the names of the architects he has worked with; Tom Doak, Bill Coore, Gil Hanse, but Kye is the guy that comes in to do tha actual work of shaping, moving earth, rolling greens, and all of the other things that most of us never think about. Along with Kye’s pedigree in the golf course design world, he also happens to be the son of Bob Goalby, the 1968 Masters champion and is related to Jay and Jerry Haas. It is pretty safe to say that Kye grew up in a world filled with golf, yet unlike some of his family members who made their living teeing it up on the course, Kye is making his playing in the dirt. Golf Course Design Highlights See a list of Kye’s Course Design HighlightsDownload Highlights from this Episode The difference between a shaper and a designer and how he balances and trades off between the two hats depending on who he is working with and what the project calls for. When and how he got into building golf courses and his history and experiences with golf as a child and young adult. He also talks about the different courses he has worked on and what his travel schedule looks like as he balances working on many different projects simultaneously. What goes into building these courses and who he is designing and shaping these courses for when taking into consideration amateur play vs. professional and the challenges he faces from conception to actually moving earth. He also talks about the first things he notices on a golf course when he plays it and what we should look out for as well.Kye shares some stories of growing up with his dad, getting off-hand golf tips from a masters champion, flying out to tournaments, and what happened when Sam Snead and Jack Nicklaus gave him advice hitting balls at Augusta. His thoughts on how they have changed Augusta and what they need to do to continue adjusting it to keep up with the strength and distance the newer players can hit it.He talks about Tara Iti golf course; his work on it, what makes it so special, and why everyone can’t stop talking about it. Parting Questions: Caddyshack or Happy Gilmore?Caddy Shack What is your walk-up song to the first tee box of the Masters?  Help by The Beatles If you could play anywhere in the world with any 3 people, who would it be and where would you play?  Dad, Jay, and Jerry Haas at Cyprus Point If you could make changes to any course in the nation, where would it be?  Re-touchup the greens and bunkering at Cyprus Point Episode Sponsors LINKSOUL: For your 20% discount on LINKSOUL gear, go to 18strong.com/linksoul or click the logo below.

304: Athletic Motion Golf: What’s Really Going On In A Great Golf Swing?

This week we’ve got Shaun Webb and Mike Granato from Athletic Motion Golf; two guys that are taking all of the 3D technology that they are able to use with their professional and amateur golfers and show us the difference between what the low handicapper is doing vs what the high handicapper Many of us as amateurs we think we are getting into a certain position, we think we’re moving in the right direction or making the right move but when you see the difference between the 3D captures, you see what they are talking about in the different drills they give. So in todays episode we talk about the “swing killers” that they see amateurs making that the pros don’t make, Bryson DeChambeau and how a lot of what he is doing is not just the physical stuff of gaining weight and getting stronger but some of the things he is doing with his golf swing to create more speed, and what mistakes and simple things you and I can fix in our own game. Athletic Motion Golf Background: Having worked with golfers from the PGA Tour, Champions Tour, European Tour, Korn Ferry Tour, LPGA Tour, and every level of amateur golfer – Shaun Webb and Mike Granato started Athletic Motion Golf to help more golfers incorporate athletic principles that make for a better more dynamic golf swing. Highlights From This Episode Both Mike and Shaun’s background in instruction and golf technology and how it led to the inception of Athletic Motion golf and what that stands for.Where they collect and pull their swing data from and how using the Gears 3D system (which they describe as almost like a Video Game Motion Capture system) opened their eyes to the intricacies of the golf swing and the almost unlimited amount of data they are able to sift through. The debate of “swinging your own swing” vs. trying to replicate a model exactly: Shaun and Mike give their insights into how to find a balance between using your own athleticism and have flexibility while instituting different parameters to improve your swing. One thing we can look for if we took a video of our swing today and active steps we can do to avoid the slice over the top like checking the face of your pelvis on the top of your backswing. How they coordinate the analytical side to the fitness side and how they interact with some of their top tier professionals. They also talk on the slight changes Bryson DeChambeau did to his swing to improve his swing speed and distance. Finally I get their thoughts on if they think we will see limitations on the technology used in golf, as the professionals get better and stronger. Mike talks on their newly finished AMG Speed system to go along with their Swing System which is a start to finish look at your swing to increase speed.
