141: Take control of your game by taking control of your SELF. -Katherine Roberts
Today I am very excited to announce our guest, Katherine Roberts. Katherine has been on the show before, on episode 58.
For over 15 years, Katherine has been a leader and an innovator in the world of golf fitness. Her unique and highly effective approach blends yoga, science, and proprietary golf-specific conditioning strategies into one powerful methodology – Yoga For Golfers (YFG). YFG harnesses and integrates the power of the body with the power of the mind to increase and enhance performance, enabling golfers at all levels to play better, play stronger, and play longer.
Katherine is the producer of nine DVDs and author of the ground-breaking book Yoga for Golfers (McGraw-Hill). Her second book, Swing Flaws and Fitness Fixes, was co-authored with Top-100 Golf Instructor and then-Tiger Woods’ Coach, Hank Haney. Katherine continues to incorporate innovative, new scientific technology into work.
Katherine is dedicated to helping people achieve maximum performance and balance both on-and-off the course. and teams up regularly with golf organizations around the world.
Katherine Roberts’ Background
Katherine’s work in golf has been profiled by USA TODAY, The NY and LA Times, The National Post (Canada), Golf Magazine, Golfweek, Golf Tips Magazine.
Her yoga and sports fitness company has certified Yoga For Golfers instructors in more than 15 countries on 4 continents.
Katherine is also a recognized speaker and instructor at golf industry conferences and events across the globe.
Katherine has been working in Major League Baseball (MLB) for more than a decade, serving as the Yoga Performance Coach for MLB teams including the Oakland As, LA Dodgers, San Diego Padres, Chicago Cubs, Texas Rangers, and Milwaukee Brewers.
Highlights from this Episode
What mobility means. Katherine has the view that mobility should be viewed holistically, and not just as a series of stretches. It has a lot to do with ‘freedom’ of body movement and how it relates to your mind.
The eight limbs of yoga. This has to with all of the different functions that yoga serves. Most people think of yoga in terms of flexibility and breathing. But there is much more to it, especially in terms of how the mind works in relation to the body. (You can find the full list and descriptions of the following list here: http://www.yogajournal.com/practice/the-eight-limbs)
Yama- One’s ethical standards and sense of intregrity
Niyama- Self Discipline and spiritual observances
Asana- The postures practiced in yoga
Pranayama- Breath Control
Pratyahara- Withdrawal or sensory transcendence
Dharana- Concentration
Dhyana- Meditation or Contemplation
Samadhi- The state of Ecstacy
How to get yourself in a mindset that is more likely to help you succeed. Katherine does a lot of work around the parasympathetic nervous system, which is the body’s fight or flight mechanism. There are a number of breathing exercises and mindfulness exercises that can help, which we get into.
The importance of keeping your jaw relaxed. When Katherine works with MLB pitchers, she actually has them hold Dorito in their jaw. When they pitch, they’re not allowed to break the Dorito!
How to be more ‘intentional’ about what you’re doing. Golfers and athletes can help their performance quite a bit by just thinking deeply and focusing on what they are about to do. Meditation helps with this.
Why you need to think of your wellness, fitness, mobility etc. in terms bigger than the gym or the golf course. This is your life and it’s so important to keep moving when you’re not training.
What would be your walk up song to the tee?

140: Nutrition: You don’t have to like it. Just Do it. -Tony Soaib
Today I am very excited to announce our guest, Tony Soaib. Tony is one of the smartest people I know, and one of the leading experts on sports nutrition. I personally have learnt most of what I know about strength, conditioning and nutrition from Tony and he remains to this day a constant source of inspiration and information.
Tony has the uncanny ability to be able to read something once and retain the information. He is also a great communicator, and straight shooter. You may not have heard Tony’s name around, only because he is one of the most modest, low-key people around, despite his impressive background and knowledge.
This episode is packed full of valuable information – get your notepad out!
Tony Soaib’s Background
Tony is a strength coach and nutrition specialist, who has worked with major league athletes mainly across hockey and baseball
He played college Baseball before he started his consulting and coaching career
He has presented at national conferences and written for major publications.
Highlights from this Episode
Tony’s thoughts on what good nutrition is. The first step is to just start doing the things you already know are good to do – eat fruit, vegetables, lean protein etc. Everyone knows they need to do this, but not everyone does it.
There are a ton of different diets out there, and a lot of them do have merit. Whether it’s paleo, low carb, high fat etc., the important thing is to stick with one, and don’t incorporate elements from a combination of diets.
Tony has a simple three step framework that anyone can apply to their diet to live more healthily. We talk about each step in depth, and how to apply them differently given your goals (performance, maintenance, weight loss etc.)
An easy calculation people can do to know how much they should be eating to lose, maintain, or gain weight. We also discuss the ideal ratios between macro nutrients – protein, fat, and carbs.
Tony believes that most ‘mainstream’ diets will work, if you actually follow them to a tee. If you follow one for a few months and you don’t see results, then it might make sense to adjust. But only trying a diet for 2-3 weeks probably won’t yield the results you’re looking for.
How much food a golfer actually needs to get around the course. Golf probably won’t bump up your calorie needs too much throughout the day, so don’t over compensate with too much food.
The following is the text from the postook poste mentioned in the episode:
“I use a four step process when helping clients with nutrition.
Step 1: types of food
Proteins – chicken, fish, beef, turkey, eggs, whey
Fats – nuts, seeds, olive oil, coconut oil, avocado
Carbs – fruits, vegetables, oatmeal, rice, sweet potatoes
Once a client complies with this list for 90%+ of their feedings I move on to step 2.
Step 2: how much food
There are a number of formulas for determining caloric intake factoring in age, gender, activity level, and so on. The vast majority of people overestimate calorie needs.
An easy starting point for calories per day:
Fat Loss – Body Weight X 10-12
Maintenance – Body Weight X 13-15
Muscle Gain – Body Weight X 16+
So a 200-pound man looking to maintain his body weight would eat 2600-3000 calories per day.
These calculations will work for most people most of the time. There are exceptions like competitive athletes performing a high volume of work, or those looking to get to extremely low levels of body fat.
Step 3: macronutrient ratios
A baseline that will work in most cases is 1/3 of calories from fat, 1/3 from protein, 1/3 carbs.
Adjust from there depending on the following:
Is your goal to gain muscle?
Is your goal to lose fat?
What is your body fat percentage?
How much muscle mass do you have?
In hours, how much high intensity training are you doing per week?
A lean & muscular athlete who trains 10 hours per week and is looking to add muscle mass will use a higher ratio of carbs. For example, 65% carbs, 25% protein, 10% fat.
A fatter weekend warrior working a desk job and training hard 3 hours per week will take in a lower ratio of carbs: 20% carbs, 40% protein, 40% fat.
Basically, you earn a higher proportion of carbs through leanness, muscle mass, and activity level.
Step 4 is timing and cycling of macronutrients.
Few people reach step 3, and <5% of people reach step 4. And that’s not necessarily a bad thing. It’s just unwarranted to reach their goals or isn’t in line with their level of commitment.
Below is a Sample Fat Loss Progressions prepared by Tony Soaib (click the link or image to download)

What would be your walk up song to the tee?
Bobby Digital – You Can’t Stop Me Now
Who would you like to spend a day on the course with, and where?

139: Fitness Shouldn’t Be So Complicated!
Recently, I asked myself a few pretty important questions, like . . .
“What is the point of all of this golf fitness stuff?”
“Why does the 18STRONG Podcast even exist?”
“Why do you listen in every week?”
“Is it simply to chat with interesting people in the world of golf and golf fitness? or is there more to it than that?”
The answer was pretty clear that it’s not simply about having conversations and putting out random content. The mission is bigger than that. The intent is to help. To simplify. And ultimately provide you with clear cut ways to get in better shape (physically and mentally) to play better golf. That’s it.
With that mission in mind, I realized that sometimes this whole golf fitness thing can get pretty confusing and if you aren’t in the industry of fitness, you might feel like your drifting in the ocean without a life ring.
So the purpose of this episode is to simply give you a few anchors that you can cling to so you don’t get lost in the sea of information out there.
Highlights:
3 Big Golf Fitness Mistakes to Avoid
Stop being so serious:
Odds are you aren’t going to get a sponsors exemption into the next PGA tournament.
While you should be doing some specific things to help your golf game in your fitness program, let’s get real, what you really need to do
is get in better shape
lose a few pounds
be able to move better
not get tired at the end of a round
and not hurt yourself
Stop trying to make everything about golf. Get your body better and your game will change drastically
Lack of Consistency over long periods of time.
Slow and steady wins the race
It’s not always about how hard you work out or how tired you are after one training session, it’s about small wins and gains over time.
Just going through the motions.
You have to actually push yourself and mix it up on a regular basis
In order to create change, you have to have focus on what you are trying to accomplish.
Doing an exercise without actually paying attention to the how you are generating the force/tension, or without consciously trying to improve leaves a lot of potential on the table.
5 Simple Components to Your Golf Fitness Program
Movement:
Completely underutilized. The philosophy is simple. Use it or lose it. (we expect to go out and play golf without ever putting our body in positions that are needed). A load greater than your tissue can handle causes injury
Need to move our joints every day: especially
Neck
Shoulders
Trunk
Hips
Ankles
Before throwing a bunch of weight on an exercise, we need to know that you can move through the motion without bad form
Resistance:
You need to challenge yourself in some way
Weights or a position/movement that you can’t get into
Typically we think of this as using weights to strengthen our muscles, but sometimes this can be doing those super hard postural exercises and working into new ranges of motion (sometimes these are even harder than the weighted exercises)
Intensity (HIIT)
Specifically, I’m talking about doing some sort of high intensity interval training
I like because its quick and effective.
It tests your cardio, which helps with your endurance and is also a very effective way to burn fat, which is one of the biggest goals that most people are looking for these days in a fitness program (whther it’s golf related or not)
Mentally and physically challenging (pushes you to your limits and tests your mental/physical will) which I think we all need to do on occasion )I stopped doing this for a while and forgot how effective and rewarding it can be
Speed
Without doing something in your traininig that works on speed, how can you ever expect to move faster than you do today?
Includes things like plyometrics, med ball throws, slams, etc. (preferably toward beginning of the workout or on a separate day)
My go to for most golfers these days is implementing an overspeed protocol with the Superspeed golf clubs. It’s quick, it’s specific, it works both sides of the body, and it’s fun/easy for people to do on their own.
Nutrition
The number one way to lose fat and get leaner. Without question.
I don’t think the majority of us put this into the proper perspective.
“I worked out so I don’t have to worry”
Supplements, protein bars, shakes, etc
Fruits and veggies are not the same thing
Need to look at this as the primary way that our body functions.
What we eat feeds our heart, our brain, our muscles, every process in the body
You can make the scale tip with all kinds of crazy variations, fasting diets, liquid cleanses, etc, but again, simple, consistent eating of good whole foods will win everytime.
Have some strategies around what you are going to eat in a certain situation. I know that when I get off track, it is simply a planning issue.
Each of these have different values in your program depending on what your current and long term goals are. So . . .
WHAT IS YOUR GOLF FITNESS GOAL RIGHT NOW? (if you don’t know, it’s time to sit down and really think about it.)
In general, if I were to put them in a hierarchal order, without taking into account any particular goal, I would list them as follows. I believe movement and nutrition play the most fundamentals roles that everything else builds on.
Movement/Nutrition
Resistance
Intensity
Speed

Some of the biggest concerns and struggles that golfer’s experience as they get older. A lot of them tend to lose club head speed, and the SSG system is able to get some of that back, almost immediately. The guys also lay out a framework to ensure players don’t injure themselves when using their system.
What it is about the SuperSpeed system that allows for such fast results in improving their club head speed. We talk about the actual physiological events in the body that are changed by implementing the system.
We talk about a few alternative methods and tools people can use to improve clubhead speed if they don’t use the SuperSpeed system.
How to implement the system as part of your training schedule. When to implement, how often etc. We also talk about how to think about fatigue and rest when using the system.

137: Finding a Fitness Plan that Works for You with Andrew Hannon
Today I am very excited to announce our guest, Andrew Hannon. Andrew is a personal trainer and fitness professional and golf fitness instructor with Premier Fitness Systems.
Andrew is a huge proponent of golf fitness and performance and believes that the general public can benefit from the techniques and concepts of golf fitness training through mobility, flexibility, and dynamic movement, while still combining traditional strength and athletic movements. Andrew’s view on health and fitness is not necessarily about looking ripped or toned year round with high-intensity workouts, but about a lifestyle change through active habits, maintainable nutritional choices, and a healthy mindset of self-worth.
Andrew loves working with all types of people and enjoys creating valuable interpersonal relationships that can help clients exceed their goals. He enjoys learning about his clients to ensure a fun, motivational and fulfilling workout.
Andrew Hannon’s Background
Andrew started as an athlete in a small town in Kansas where he participated in three sports in high school.
His sports career continued at Baker University where he played baseball and basketball.
During that time Andrew began to find his true passion for fitness and performance.
While majoring in Exercise Science his knowledge on fitness and health continued to grow.
Andrew is a TPI certified trainer and works with golfers of all levels from amateur, recreational, professional, as well as other individuals simply looking to move better and get stronger.
Highlights from this Episode
Andrew shares his background growing up as a baseball and basketball player ans how he ended up getting into the fitness business, eventually making his way to Arizona to specialize working with golfers.
We talk about some of the bigger pieces a golfer needs to pay attention to when thinking about golf fitness and mobility. Andrew looks at three main things whenever he starts consulting with a new client: how well they hinge, their pelvis, and what they do with their feet.
How to get clients to ‘buy in’ to working on certain movements that are really important to work on, but may not be quite as exciting as jumping right into lifting heavy weights.
Why people have such a resistance to warming up properly when they get to the range or course. Andrew sees so many golfers who have injured themselves, and it can largely be prevented with a decent warm up. We talk about a few simple exercises that anyone can do before they start swinging a club.
To see some of Andrew’s warm-up videos, go to his Instagram feed.
We talk about Andrew’s three main pillars of health and fitness, and how everyone can apply them to live a better life. They are:
create active habits
maintainable nutritional choices

Today I am very excited to announce our guest; Stan Utley. Stan is a professional golfer who has played on the PGA Tour and the Nationwide Tour. He is renowned for having one of the best short games in the game of golf. He holds the PGA Tour record for fewest putts in nine holes, with six at the 2002 Air Canada Championship.
As his touring career was winding down, Utley began to take advantage of his reputation as one of the best chippers and putters in the game. He began a transition into teaching and writing with a focus on his specialty – the short game.
Utley has now risen to prominence as one of the best instructors in golf, with Golf Digest naming him one of America’s 50 greatest teachers.
Stan Utley’s Background
Utley was born and raised in Thayer, a small town in southern Missouri.
He attended the University of Missouri where he was a member of the golf team, a three-time all-Big Eight selection, and two-time All-American.
He turned professional in 1984 and joined the PGA Tour in 1989.
Utley’s sole PGA Tour victory came in 1989 at the Chattanooga Classic.
He lost his PGA Tour card in 1992 and decided to play on the Nike Tour (now known as the Nationwide Tour).
Stan soon began to focus more on teaching other golfers and professionals. He quickly became one of the most prominent and sought after short game coaches in all of golf.

We go into Stan’s background growing up in southern Missouri, and how he originally got into the game of golf. He originally wanted to be a basketballer, and we get into what made him ultimately decide to focus on golf instead.
Stan is now a full-time teacher, and we talk about how he made the transition from professional golfer to professional teacher. There was a clear moment when Stan realized that he wanted to be a teacher and that he would excel at it.
Stan goes into some of the most common mistakes that people make when they practice their short game. In Stan’s view, it is all about getting the optimal timing between the handle speed and the head of the club speed.
A few tips and drills that Stan recommends for people to improve their short game. Stan also mentions a few players on the tour who are doing it well, and who other golfers should emulate.
We talk about the training aid, the‘Orange Whip’. Stan gives his thoughts on why it works, and how it can be used for golfers to improve their game.

135: One of Golf’s Oldest Stories on the Big Screen with Jason Connery
Today I am very excited to announce our guest, Jason Connery. Jason is the director of the golf film, Tommy’s Honour – a 2016 historical drama film depicting the lives and careers of the pioneering Scottish golfing champions Old Tom Morris and his son Young Tommy Morris.
Jason Connery has appeared in over 30 films, television movies and series, since his breakthrough role as “Robin Hood” in the UK television series Robin Hood in 1985.
He is the son of Sean Connery, and a big fan of the game of golf.
Jason Connery’s Background
Jason grew up in London and Scotland.
He received a half-scholarship for swimming and held the under-16 freestyle record for the south of England.
Jason’s interest in acting developed while studying at the Gordonstoun School for Boys in the north of Scotland.
He credits his mother and father for his drive and his ability to survive and persevere in an unpredictable business.
After achieving success as an actor for two decades, Connery is working behind the cameras with his recently formed production company, “Unconditional Entertainment”.
Highlights from this Episode
We talk about what drew Jason to making the film about Tom Morris. He originally knew a little about the Morris’, but didn’t know the full extent of the story. Over the course of a year he came to learn a lot about the two and their passion for the game of golf. Jason is very passionate about film and golf, so the making of this film seemed like a logical step.
We also get into some of the challenges that come with making films, and in particular this film. He was repeatedly told that ‘golf’ films had great difficulty in being successful, and had to overcome a lot of negative perceptions of the script.
How Jason and the crew navigated the weather, being that they filmed in Scotland which is notorious for bad weather. They were incredibly lucky and only had one morning of filming where it was raining.
We talk about the background of old Tom and young Tommy Morris, and the impact they had on the game of golf.
Jason still enjoys getting out and playing a round of golf, and we discuss how his golf game is and where he likes to play.

133: Satisfying Your Golf Craving in Minutes with Andy Johnson
Today I am very excited to announce our guest, Andy Johnson. Andy is the founder and editor of online golf blog, the Fried Egg.
After playing competitively on the amateur circuit for years, he found himself working a 9-5 job. His time for golf and keeping up to date with golf news started disappearing quickly.
Andy started the fried egg in December 2015 with the goal of creating an easier way for golf fans to stay up to date with the golf world. The newsletter, sent every Monday, Wednesday and Friday is designed to give you all of the yolk and none of the shell leaving you feeling like a PGA Tour insider in just a couple of minutes.
Andy Johnson Background
Andy got into golf at the age of 10, after seeing Tiger Woods and Steve Scott play in the final of the US Amateur in 1996.
From that day on, his Chicago summers were spent at the golf course. He caddied and worked at a few area country clubs and played countless rounds at a local course.
Andy got good enough to play in high school and ended up playing a year of college golf.
Andy worked for years in the Chicago tech world, which is how he first got involved with writing. He eventually combined his love for writing and golf in 2015 and started the Fried Egg.
Highlights from this Episode
How Andy writes – he doesn’t consider himself a ‘natural writer’, and needs to do certain things to get in the zone. We talk about all of the other things that are involved in writing, that need to happen to publish high quality content.
Andy writes a lot about golf course design and architecture. We talk about what makes a great course, and some of his favorite courses.
We talk about some resources and ways Andy has found to ‘think’ his way around the golf course, and thinking through what needs to be done in certain situations.
Some of the coolest experiences Andy has had since starting the Fried Egg. He has made some great connections through writing, such as interviewing Tom Doak – one of the greatest golf course designers to ever live.
Andy’s take on the Masters, who he is tipping to perform well, and who he thinks will win.

132: To Be or Not to be “Golfish” with Scott Shepard
Today I am very excited to announce our guest, Scott Shepard. Scott is the founder of Driven Golf Performance and Plane Performance Fitness-Wellness. Both companies are dedicated to Health and Performance Improvement through Customized Fitness and Rehabilitation Programs.
There is a very big discussion going on in the world of golf and fitness these days about whether golfers should be lifting and training the way that guys like Rory and Jason Day are. But amongst those in the “golf fitness” world, there is also a debate on whether that training should or shouldn’t be “golfish” in nature. (Golfish = Looking like a golf movement).
While many of the previous guests on the show lean much more to the “anti-golfish” camp, Scott brings a new perspective on the matter and shares his reasoning for including a little “golfishness” in his routines.
Scott Shepard’s Background
Scott is a Licensed Physical Therapist and Strength & Conditioning Coach with over 12 years of experience.
Scott has a Masters’ Degree in Physical Therapy from the University of Central Florida.
He has also obtained advanced credentials such as becoming a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist through the National Strength and Conditioning Association and a Titleist Certified Golf Fitness Specialist.
Scott is also a recognized leader in the field of sports injury management and his services have been sought out by many professional athletes from multiple sports.
Scott is the health and fitness consultant for the Mike Bender Golf Academies. He is also the personal fitness and rehabilitation provider for several professional and top level amateur-collegiate athletes in the Central Florida area.
He has been a featured speaker on Rehabilitation and Golf Performance Training several times including the Titleist World Golf Fitness Summit 2011, APTA Sports Physical Therapy Team Conference 2009, Florida Physical Therapy Annual Conference, and the PGA Show 2014.
Highlights from this Episode
How Scott overcame the resistance of starting a golf fitness program. At first, a lot of golf pros disagreed with Scott’s training methods. Now, that same methodology is commonplace in the sport.
How Scott made the transition from being more of a rehab and injury prevention trainer to an optimal performance and fitness/strength trainer.
The meaning and origin of the term “golfish”. Scott and I have our own thoughts on how this applies to fitness training and golf, and when it is appropriate to incorporate into your training.
Isolated golf fitness vs integrated golf fitness.
Scott explains what he calls “positional mobility” and why it’s important to be strong and mobile in “game-like” positions.
The difference between training pros and training everyday golfers. Scott gets into the main differences between the two, and how he would approach training each. Pros tend to have high levels of integration, and great swings, but often times have been training with patterns that are terrible for their body. This tends to differ from the everyday golfer who isn’t focusing as much on golf specific movements.
Caddy Shack or Happy Gilmore?

What would be your “walk-up song?”
LL Cool J – Momma Said Knock You Out
Who would you like to spend a day on the course with, and where?
My wife at Augusta
Parting advice?
Don’t be afraid to be ‘golfish’, and don’t be too “isolational” (working only on strength, mobility etc. with your training).
