The 'Man in Black' in Irish folklore
To give you an idea of what the podcast Patreon is like I've compiled this show from some of last years bonus content from the community. Yes, I'm on the hard sell...
The 'Man in black' is a figure that has come up a few times in the podcast not least as an adversary in the guise of 'Old Nick' or in a more modern context the MIB phenomenon. In this bonus show, I'll talk about how this figure is represented in both Irish folklore and in Irish mythology as the 'Fear Dubh Dorcha'. The stories I have gathered are from Duchas.ie.
"These stories feature the common themes of the 'Dark horseman' trickster that leads the protagonist awry and is quite unnecessarily cruel and spiteful on travellers he meets along the road. ... things take a darker turn and the human visitor gets an unpleasant supernatural brush with death.
The stories propose that the reason for this unnecessary cruelty is a grudge the fairy folk has against humanity, much like the Djinn. I then briefly discuss the startlingly similar origin myths of the Fairies and Djinn."
All these pieces have been gathered from the rural communities of Ireland via numerous folklorists and cataloged meticulously. I'm in their debt, it was a privilege to read through these handwritten stories and testimonies.
Anyway, hurry along the road this dark night, lest you cross paths with the 'Man in black'.

#64 / Celeste Mott on identity and place, discernment and spirit attacks.
For episode #64 we are joined by occultist, poet and writer Celeste Mott.
Born in England and raised in Australia, Celeste has made New Orleans her home.
She was gifted her first tarot deck in the 90s, and at age 13 she began seriously studying the cards, along with every book about spiritualism, magick, and the occult she could get her hands on. Her personal studies and practices led her to earn an B.A. in Philosophy & Comparative Religion, with a special focus on New Religious Movements and magic & ritual in contemporary religiosity.
In the context of Celeste’s nomadic past we discuss Identity and place, and the importance of discernment with the Occult groups you reach out to and engage with. Celeste shares with us a formative spirit experience with what would become a familiar spirit. We also discuss recent events where Celeste was dealing with a particularly unpleasant spirit that has formed an attachment to her.
We recorded this against the backdrop of a very large thunderstorm and at the 104 min mark the Storm Gods decided it was time to intercede and cut my WiFi. Look out for the 'hold' music!
In Plus section Celeste and I nobly battle on in spite of the storm to delight and inspire you further! We discuss the TikTok prevalence for humanising Spirits or Deities, poetry as an expression for her magical process. We wrap up talking about living in a hurricane alley and the healing qualities of practicing gardening and how we communicate with plants.
Enjoy!

#62 / Aidan Wachter, on writing, the somnambulist self & the authentic self.
For episode 62 we welcome back author, magican and talismanic jeweller, Aidan Wachter.
We discuss he last book Weaving Fate and Aidan’s writing process, including the importance of flow and how his work is made up of broken pieces which makes sense at a later point.
We talk magic as a tool for altering future probabilities and ones past through ritual and manipulation of the mind and the world. Magic and sorcery are ways of being in the world and Aidan's writing offers us his way without conditions or constraints.
Aidan’s work helps anchor us around the understanding that our lives are our own. That we can be our own real time biographers and we can write a better story. He also gives us a good toolkit for doing so in both of his books, Six Waysand Weaving Fate.
In the Plus show we discuss ‘naming’ and coming of age and the idea of ‘the feral self’. I also manage to go down a rabbit hole around my confusion with billionaire's obsession with Super Yachts. I’m not even sure how my brain got there...

#60 / Douglas Batchelor, finding your way
For episode 60 we are joined by the charming Douglas Batchelor, a Magician and host of the wonderful ‘What Magic is This?’ podcast.
I hugely enjoyed this show, it was great to chat with Douglas and we really got into his journey into magick and what it has meant to him. We also dug into how the show came about and what the driving goal behind the it is about and the contribution Douglas’s ancestors have made to the direction of the podcast.
We discuss the healing and self development aspects of sorcery but most importantly what magic can give to people. In his own words...
"...my name is Douglas and I have been doing this whole sorcery and magic thing for 18 years. It’s something that I don’t normally share with people but when I do they become very interested. Either that or they stop talking to me. With luck, this podcast will help spread my enthusiasm for magic and these topics to others, because I think we could all use a bit of magic in our lives. Not only that, but what we call Magic might just be the underlying, unknown stuff that this reality runs on."
In the Plus show we talk about Douglas's personal relationships with Anubis and St Cyprian. And we discuss hearing spirit voices and mental health.
Enjoy!

In the Plus show we get into some of Ivo’s incredible experiences including a spontaneous possession by Ogun, a student's attempt to summon something a bit above their pay grade and the nature of Spirit communication and the ability of spirits to read the deeper levels of our consciousness.
