The Future Of The Space Economy
In this episode of The Future Of, Jeff is joined by Carolyn Belle, Director of Advanced Systems for Astroscale, and Andrew Maximov, CEO and Founder of Precious Payload, and Adrian Mangiuca, Vice President of Infrastructure at Voyager Space Holdings, to discuss the opportunities of building a sustainable and successful space economy. They cover:[00:12:06] The space economy includes building and launching satellites, operating them in space, sending data down to the earth, and providing communication and GPS services[00:15:04] The space economy market is roughly 300 to 400 billion dollars. The funding comes from a government and commercial mix operating with communications and GPS data[00:16:28] One of the greatest misconceptions about the space economy is people often say that space is so expensive and look at the industry with disbelief. Another misconception is that space is only a playground for billionaires[00:20:35] Big space players like Elon Musk drive immense value to the space economy. But, at the end of the day, thousands of engineers, managers, and other professionals work to push the industry forward[00:24:58] Robotics, autonomy, AI, and drone technology are significant to the space economy. These technologies reduce the cost of space operations and increase the speed at which we can deploy new innovations in space[00:34:55] Regarding the space economy, you should focus on viable ideas and solutions. Though things like asteroid mining sound profitable, the amount of capital and complexity make it unreasonable in the present. One of the things the space economy misses is the infrastructure to build these capabilities[00:41:07] The future of the space economy promises a more robust, dynamic, and interconnected activity. There would be a lot of incremental updates on existing systems and new applications[00:49:03] When it comes to space ethics and equity, we should understand young specialists' perspectives and priorities, attract people beyond the space industry, and engage the global communityIf you’re interested in the space economy, tune into this episode of “The Future Of”, a Podcast by Fresh Consulting.Full transcript: https://www.freshconsulting.com/insights/podcasts/the-future-of-the-space-economy/Subscribe here:Apple: https://apple.co/3t0hujsSpotify: https://spoti.fi/3BLB3jabCast: https://bit.ly/38yNx3lRSS: https://bit.ly/3uaCPIBAnd connect with Carolyn Belle, Andrew Maximov, and Adrian Mangiuca here:Carolyn:LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/carolynbelle/ Website: https://astroscale.com/ Andrew:LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/andreymaximov/ Website: https://preciouspayload.com/ Adrian:LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/adrian-mangiuca/ Website: https://voyagerspace.com/ About the Show“The Future Of” is a podcast by Fresh Consulting & hosted by Jeff Dance, where we discuss and learn about the future of different industries, markets, and technology verticals. The Future Of Spatial Computing
How we interact with technology has changed significantly over the last several years. Immersive technology has flourished since the COVID-19 pandemic as more workplace sectors opt for safer working, learning, and development practices. It is possible to improve how computers, people, things, and their environments interact with one another by using spatial computing. Spatial computing offers applications that go beyond retail and entertainment and aim to give the virtual world a more humane feel. With the aid of this technology, the digital 3D depiction of the virtual world can be created without the inconvenience of bulky equipment. To understand the future of spatial computing in this episode of "The Future Of", Jeff is joined by Rene Schulte, Lead of the Spatial Computing Community of Practice at Reply and Botond Bognar, Co-founder ar REscan with additional insights from Remi Arnaud, Principal Software Architect at Varjo. They cover:[00:03:31] ”By retaining and modifying references to actual objects and environments, spatial computing enables human engagement with a machine so that contextual information may be traversed and understood”[00:07:00] This technology will make entities incredibly real, both for the user and for their effect on the user.[00:15:00] In an immersive environment that spatial computing will create, proper human interaction would involve the use of hands, eyes, verbal commands, and possibly full body tracking.[00:17:00] A fascinating use of spatial computing is "remote assistance," which allows a user to stream directly in first person to a domain expert and learn in real-time.[00:18:00] Wearables can be used to produce haptic feedback in AR/VR (haptic gloves, vests, and suits). Even little amounts of haptic feedback significantly enhance the user experience.[00:23:00] Two of the primary challenges in spatial computing. Geo-privacy concerns: Real-time location information is provided via applications of spatial computing like GPS locators and trackers. And it will be crucial to design with privacy or inclusion in mind.To be able to connect and interact with each other on the virtual spatial space[00:30:00] The objective is to create a wall-sized, 3-D volumetric display that will allow users to have an extremely immersive experience without the use of burdensome glasses.[00:34:44] Examples of the impacts of spatial computing: Education: Being able to teach concepts in 3-D rather than 2-D making education more interesting for studentsHealthcare: Medical experts can accomplish more through real-time interactions with other professionals and on virtual objects that can respond much like people do.[00:40:30] A significant opportunity for technology to become more humane is provided by spatial computing. for instance, not needing a desktop computer to perform a task that I can only perform on a desktop computer.[00:51:20] As spatial computation boosts technological capability, individuals and digital platforms may become more interactive, creative, and lessen only consumerism. If you’re interested in the concept and impact of spatial computing, tune into this episode of “The Future of”, a Podcast by Fresh Consulting.Full transcript: https://www.freshconsulting.com/insights/podcasts/the-future-of-spatial-computing/Subscribe here:Apple: https://apple.co/3t0hujsSpotify: https://spoti.fi/3BLB3jabCast: https://bit.ly/38yNx3lRSS: https://bit.ly/3uaCPIBAnd connect with Rene Schulte, Botond Bognar and Remi Arnaud here:Rene:LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/reneschulteWebsite: http://www.reply.comBotond:linkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/botondbWebsite: http://www.rescan360.comRemi:linkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/r%C3%A9mi-arnaud-002200/?trk=lil_instructorWebsite: https://www.varjo.comAbout the Show“The Future Of” is a podcast by Fresh Consulting & hosted by Jeff Dance, where we discuss and learn about the future of different industries, markets, and technology verticals. The Future Of Retail
Retail is the process of selling goods or services to a consumer. Retail sales can be made directly to customers or via retail outlets. Recently, retail innovation has accelerated to a level never witnessed before. Due to the epidemic, retailers have developed a greater capacity for adaptability, creativity, and innovation. To understand the future of Retail, in this episode of "The Future Of" Jeff is joined by Gautham Vadakkepatt, an Associate Professor, a Dean's Scholar, and the Director of the Center for Retail Transformation at George Mason University, with additional insights from Sucharita Kodali, Vice President and Principal Analyst at Forrester Research. They cover:[00:02:37] Fundamentally, "retail is the process of selling goods or services to a consumer." Retail could be selling directly to consumers or through retail stores[00:03:00] A few common things, whether selling directly to consumers or retail stores, are common. They are: Merchandising: This has to do with commercializing your product or serviceLabor: This has to do with your store associates and teams as well as the customer service componentMarketing: has to do with how you get people to your offline or online store, how you get them to stay as a customer, their post-purchase experience, and moreSupply chain: This has to do with how you move products from the manufacturer to the consumer and when and where they want them[00:04:42] Direct to Customer (DTC) retail was first introduced in the industry's early days, when items were sold at retail stores[00:06:50] The pace of retail innovation has recently increased at a never-before-seen rate. Since the pandemic, retailers have become much more adaptable, inventive, and capable of meeting the ever-changing needs of their customers[00:09:14] The desire for convenience has skyrocketed and made the buy online pick-up stores a play on comfort[00:10:30] Retailers are fully aware of the environmental sustainability footprint and are making conscious efforts to address it. Remarkably, they view these more as opportunities rather than concerns.[00:11:25] Retailers' biggest problem is eliminating friction and creating memorable customer experiences. [00:11:50] Examples of friction points retailers are facing are: Going through a physical store, the amount of time you spent at checkout Stock outs Returns on products Product discovery Customer support[00:13:53] "Only about 14% of all commerce in the US is still online". Most of it is in-store, but the important thing is that there's synergy between online and offline.[00:21:57] "AI is the glue that holds the future of retail together because it allows you to effectively function and scale to whatever level of ambition"[00:31:57] Retail is the largest private sector employer in the US. This will not change soon.Full transcript: https://www.freshconsulting.com/insights/podcasts/the-future-of-retail/Subscribe here:Apple: https://apple.co/3t0hujsSpotify: https://spoti.fi/3BLB3jabCast: https://bit.ly/38yNx3lRSS: https://bit.ly/3uaCPIBAnd connect with Gautham Vadakkepatt and Sucharita Kodali here:Gautham:LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/gautham-vadakkepatt-b1a1974/ Website: https://gauthamvadakkepatt.com/Sucharita:LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/sucharitamulpuruWebsite: http://www.forrester.com About the Show“The Future Of” is a podcast by Fresh Consulting & hosted by Jeff Dance, where we discuss and learn about the future of different industries, markets, and technology verticals. The Future Of Voice AI
Conversation or voice AI is an artificial intelligence tech that enables people to interact with various advanced chatbots as they would do with other humans. The technology itself is relatively new, but the progress in its adoption and implementation has been significant. Conversational AI is rapidly improving and is shifting towards B2B, as there are many business opportunities. To understand exactly how conversational AI can be applied and where it is heading in the future, in this episode of “The Future Of” Jeff is joined by Kane Simms, Founder of VUX World, and Roger Kibbe, Senior Developer Evangelist at Samsung Research America. They cover:[00:05:53] Conversation and voice AI keeps on improving. In the last couple of years, the industry shifted its focus from the consumer to the B2B side[00:09:21] The breadth of conversational AI is vast, and it is used in business areas where there is a lot of customer demand. You can find voice AI in insurance, financial services, banking, retail, hospitality, travel, healthcare, industry sectors, and government[00:14:15] Conversational AI developed fast as the go-to-market for those devices was very effective, brought a novelty to the market, and made people's lives easier[00:20:09] The technology of voice AI is good. There are technologies for detecting your emotions, sentiment analysis, voice biometrics, and speech recognition. In recent years, the accuracy level of these technologies has increased, and they are ready for production and business adoption[00:32:43] Regarding healthcare, voice AI could detect anomalies in your overall health or remind you to take your medication on time. It can also help with mental health issues. For doctors, there are applications like recording what they say and eliminating the need to type or assist during operations[00:39:29] In robotics, most human-like robots should have a conversational interface. Generally, voice AI will be an assistant for every device to understand if there are any problems or help humans with their daily activities[00:47:26] The operating system level in the metaverse needs navigation capabilities that voice AI might be useful for. And the same thing applies to digital avatarsIf you’re interested in the concept of conversational AI, tune into this episode of “The Future of”, a Podcast by Fresh Consulting.Full transcript: https://www.freshconsulting.com/insights/podcasts/the-future-of-voice-ai/Subscribe here:Apple: https://apple.co/3t0hujsSpotify: https://spoti.fi/3BLB3jabCast: https://bit.ly/38yNx3lRSS: https://bit.ly/3uaCPIBAnd connect with Kane Simms and Roger Kibbe here:Kane:LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/kanesimms/Website: https://vux.worldRoger:LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/rkibbeWebsite: https://www.sra.samsung.comAbout the Show“The Future Of” is a podcast by Fresh Consulting & hosted by Jeff Dance, where we discuss and learn about the future of different industries, markets, and technology verticals. The Future Of IoT
The "Internet of Things" (IoT) refers to the practice of connecting real-world devices to the internet in order to gather information about such objects. Many folks have the misconception that it started happening all of a sudden. Over the course of many years, a number of companies have been focusing their efforts on enhancing it in some way.The Internet of Things value chain is composed of several components, including devices, gateways, network servers, application servers, and networks. There are public, private, and even satellite network options available. Additionally, there is the option of joining a community network or a hybrid network, both of which enable you to transfer your devices freely between networks without losing their tracking capabilities.Over the course of the last twenty years, there has been unwavering progress. On the market, you can now find silicon chips with integrated LoRa that also include a strong central processing unit and a LoRa front-end. These chips may also be purchased. Connectivity is essential for the cloud and all of its associated ecosystems. In this episode of “The Future Of” Jeff is joined by Donna Moore, CEO and Chairwoman of LoRa Alliance, Reg Orton Product Development Lead at Fresh Consulting and Rob Tiffany Chief Vision Officer CVO Sustainable Logix. They cover:[ 00:06:00 ] To enable an economy to grow, you need two things:"power and connectivity." These, in turn, would allow industries to increase and improve Gross domestic product GDP[ 00:07:00 ] "Internet of Things IoT is connecting things to the internet to provide data." Many people think it just happened overnight, but it didn't. It's been evolving for years, and many companies have been working on developing their devices[ 00:07:31 ] "To put out IoT, it takes a village." The value chain of IoT consists of; devices, gateways to take the data from the devices, network servers, applications servers, and networks. There are all types of networks, public, private, and satellite. Also, there are now community and hybrid networks, where you can roam devices for tracking between networks[ 00:10:00 ] The timeline over the last 20 years has been that of progress. You can now buy Silicon chips off the shelf with embedded LoRa, packed with a high-power processor, plus a LoRa front-end. In addition, a connection to the cloud and all the ecosystems around it[ 00:11:33 ] The concept of "digital twins" is digitally modeling a physical asset, entity, or process. This entails creating a digital representation of it. It's a great way to understand and apply analytics to things that are in the real world[ 00:13:18 ] As 5G rolls out, new technologies are springing up that allow lower cost, lower power, and many more devices that can work across spectrums and standards previously stuck in the LTE realm[ 00:16:09 ] One of the most exciting things about IoT is "the adoption or the creation of new business models that never existed before"[ 00:22:31 ] "As AI and process automation continue, and digital twins become more mainstream, we will see hyper-performance and profits for businesses because that data just keeps getting smarter"[ 00:22:51 ] If things go well, we won't be seeing IoT anymore in the next ten to twenty years. It'll disappear into the background and fade into the "fabric of things"[ 00:25:40 ] Using artificial intelligence, vast volumes of disparate data can be transformed into something helpful, such as increasing public safety, traffic patterns and efficiency, and utility systems[ 00:29:30 ] One of the biggest challenges faced by IoT today is its complexity. Security is yet another challenge, as IoT inadvertently created the largest attack surface in the history of computing[ 00:34:38 ] In healthcare, IoT has improved the ability to carry out ambient measurements of devices, for example, by installing air quality sensors in cities to monitor pollution levels. Also, you can track people's footprints and, using artificial intelligence and machine learning, predict where healthcare needs more interventionFull transcript: https://www.freshconsulting.com/insights/podcasts/the-future-of-iot/Subscribe here:Apple: https://apple.co/3t0hujsSpotify: https://spoti.fi/3BLB3jabCast: https://bit.ly/38yNx3lRSS: https://bit.ly/3uaCPIBAnd connect with Donna Moore and Reg Orton here:Donna:LinkedIn: http://linkedin.com/in/donnamoore4Website: https://lora-alliance.orgReg:LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/regorton/Website: https://www.freshconsulting.comRob:LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/robtiffany/Website: https://sustainablelogix.comAbout the Show“The Future Of” is a podcast by Fresh Consulting & hosted by Jeff Dance, where we discuss and learn about the future of different industries, markets, and technology verticals. The Future Of Autonomous Systems
Very often, the terms "automated" and "autonomous" are used interchangeably, and while they're similar, they're not the same. While automated systems are run based on ML and AI and restricted to specific parameters within which they can work, autonomous systems also use ML and AI but are more adaptive and learn within dynamic environments. Autonomous systems are more intelligent and can even be likened to the human brain based on their decision-making process and ability to work seamlessly with humans as well as other machines. These sophisticated systems can solve many modern-day problems from supply chain management, hasten production, provide new job opportunities, and even be trained to assist in the healthcare sector and personal use by people with disabilities. While enjoying the benefits of autonomous systems across various industries, humanity must also have the ethics attached to developing these systems under control, from legalities and safety of operations to transparency. Although there's still work to be done in developing these systems, the future of autonomous systems in the next decade or two shows a lot of promise. In this episode of The Future Of… Jeff is joined by Gurdeep Pall, Corporate Vice President, Head of Product Incubations at Microsoft, and Steve Yin, Principal Software Engineer at Fresh Consulting. The Future Of Voting
The primary means of voting in the USA for many years was through paper ballots. In the late 1800s, this changed as automation was encouraged to count votes. In 2000, the US used voting machines during the electoral process through computer-assisted technology but encountered a voting dilemma the same year. Afterward, purely electronic devices were used, but the damage was done, and a general lack of faith in the technology caused a mistrust of these machines and their accuracy. Today, due to the issues of ballot design, voting errors, and counting and recounting errors, more sophisticated technology is now being considered over the current ones. In this episode of The Future Of… Jeff is joined by Gregory Miller, Co-Founder and Chief Operating Officer at OSET Institute, & Marcelino Alvarez, Chief Product Officer at Fresh Consulting & Jocelyn Bucaro, Director, Mobile Voting Project, Tusk Philanthropie. They cover:The voting process todayThe (centralization of a highly decentralized) election management system Key players for the current voting systemThe challenges faced during the voting processPolicy innovations to encourage votingCivic tech and gov techThe security risks present in the current voting system The future of voting in the 21st CenturyWhy Blockchain and distributed ledger voting is impractical in the USA right nowThe trust of the paper ballot over blockchain votingSmartphone biometrics authorization and votingThe UX of ballot papers in the voting processLaws and policies guiding votingBipartisan organizations involved in the advancement of democracyThe prospect of active participation in the voting process by the future generationIf you’re interested in the UI/UX of the electoral process, the UX of ballot design, laws and policies governing the voting process, or, generally, the technology behind the voting process and its future, tune into this episode of The Future of… a Podcast by Fresh.Full transcript: https://www.freshconsulting.com/insights/podcasts/the-future-of-voting/Subscribe here:Apple: https://apple.co/3t0hujsSpotify: https://spoti.fi/3BLB3jabCast: https://bit.ly/38yNx3lRSS: https://bit.ly/3uaCPIBAnd connect with Gregory and Marcelino here:Gregory:LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/gmiller Website: https://osetinstitute.org Marcelino:LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/marcelino Website: https://www.freshconsulting.com Jocelyn:LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/jocelyn-bucaro-59a15521 Website: https://tuskphilanthropies.com About the Show“The Future Of”, is a podcast by Fresh Consulting & hosted by Jeff Dance, where we discuss and learn about the future of different industries, markets, and technology verticals.
