Postgame 2/3: YOU BLEW IT!

Despite a slow start that saw David Pastrnak blow by Shayne Gostisbehere and deflect his first goal of the game off of Ivan Provorov in the game's first 12 seconds, the Philadelphia Flyers actually played one of their best games of the season on Wednesday night against the Boston Bruins. That is, of course, until a comedy of errors, namely stupid penalties, began in late in the third period. Protecting a 3-1 lead, Nicholas Aube-Kubel lead off the calamity by closing his hand around the puck when he caught a pop-fly in the neutral zone. Pasta scored his second of the night 10 seconds after the call to put Boston within one. Then, with two minutes left, Kevin Hayes got called for a lazy hook, which allowed No. 88 to convery his hat trick with only 14 seconds left in regulation. Finally, in the game's final 7 seconds, Scott Laughton committed a dumb interference which gave the Bruins a power play to begin overtime, a 4-on-3 advantage they used to win the game 30 seconds into the extra frame. Yup, Philly gave this one away. For full analysis, check out the postgame. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices Learn more about your ad choices. Postgame 1/31: Three from the bee's knees

The Philadelphia Flyers kept their winning ways intact on Saturday night as they took care of the New York Islanders 4-3 thanks to Kevin Hayes’ overtime tally to make it four straight victories. Joel Farabee produced his second hat trick in the win as he lasered a few dishes from James van Riemsdyk (three assists) past Ilya Sorokin to hand the Orange and Black their fourth win in their last five meetings with New York. The Flyers’ forecheck was effective in the first 40 minutes as two of Farabee’s markers came off plays JVR made to gain possession of the puck in the offensive zone before the second-year forward benefitted with goals. It looked as though it was going to be the Flyers’ night until the third period, when the club allowed two preventable goals before finding themselves needing extra time resulting in Hollywood Hayes’ knockout punch. Along with the usual concerns surrounding this team involving defense and toughness, we also delved into if we should be concerned about the power play, the penalty kill looking better, new options on the blue line, Nolan Patrick, and interference away from the puck. Postgame 1/30: Maybe looking bad is a real strategy

This episode of postgame is all about the Flyers and their struggles, and the conflict between wanting to criticize them and also wanting to celebrate the 6-2-1 record. However, I'm going to use this space to talk about how awful the New York Islanders are. Their style of hockey is simply just "cheating." They get away with everything because Barry Trotz is one of the good ol' boys and since they interfere on literally every shift, the refs won't call it because it's just "how they play the game." It's bullshit. It makes for awful television and is exactly what will continue to drive down the value of the NHL's on-ice product, which needs selling pretty soon. Good luck with that. Anyway, The Flyers won in a thrilling overtime after a fairly pedestrian and often frustrating 60 minutes of regulation hockey, if you can call what the Isles play "hockey," that is. Also, Shayne Gostisbehere is back, baby! Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices Learn more about your ad choices.
