023: Rener Gracie - Harnessing the 32 Principles of Jiu-Jitsu to Succeed in Business, Relationships, and Life

I recently got an opportunity to interview Rener Gracie – a Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt, coach, author and entrepreneur. If you’re unfamiliar with the Gracie family, they are widely regarded as one of the most accomplished family dynasties in martial arts history. Ok, so what does Jiu-Jitsu have to do with financial advising? Well, for starters, BJJ is a complex sport with thousands of techniques and moves. Not only can learning the moves be challenging, but knowing which ones to use and when to use them, can get overwhelming quickly. As Rener says, “the right move at the wrong time, is the wrong move.” I see a lot of parallels with financial services. As an advisor, you need to be able to ditch the financial jargon and simplify the information in a way that’s easy for your clients to understand. You also have to be able to guide your clients on which tools and strategies to use depending on their specific situation. What’s also interesting about Rener is that he’s been able to scale his BJJ schools across the country AND he’s mastered the art of creating online content to help feed that growth. So, when it comes to building an online community and attracting your ideal audience, Rener’s got a lot of wisdom to share!  3 of the biggest insights from Rener Gracie …  How Rener grew his YouTube channel, The Gracie Breakdown, to 870k subscribers and 196 million views – and how he leveraged his channel to build an online community of 380k paying students.   3 Jiu-Jitsu principles that you can use to motivate others, resolve conflict, and overcome big obstacles in both your business and life.   The viral video content strategy Financial Advisors can use to turn their “black-belt” knowledge into simple to understand content that attracts their ideal clients and grows their online presence.JOIN THE DBDL INSIDER CREWTo become a DBDL Insider and get VIP access to free resources and exclusive content, text "DBDL" to 785-800-3235. *Message and data rates may apply. For any advisors who are fans of wine and/or investing, this episode is for you!I’m speaking with Anthony Zhang, co-founder and CEO of Vinovest—an online platform that allows anyone and everyone to invest in fine and rare wine.In the past, wine investing was exclusively reserved for the ultra-wealthy. However, Anthony figured out how to leverage technology to eliminate barriers and make this lucrative asset class a lot more accessible.BTW, this isn’t his first startup either. A separate company was backed by Mark Cuban and later acquired when he was only 21 years old. After a successful exit, he went on to start and scale multiple businesses. So, a lot to learn here on growing a team and getting the right people on the bus. 3 of the biggest insights from Anthony Zhang … Why wine investing not only delivers delight, but also minimizes taxes and offers consistent returns that have outpaced the stock market. The values-first hiring process that allowed Anthony to scale Vinovest into a lean 20-person company that manages 9-figures in assets. How Anthony turned adversity into abundance and gratitude after an accident left him paralyzed from the neck down. JOIN THE DBDL INSIDER CREWTo become a DBDL Insider and get VIP access to free resources and exclusive content, text "DBDL" to 785-800-3235. *Message and data rates may apply. 020: Triad Member - Checking Your Ego, Replacing Yourself, and Prioritizing Family with Clayton Alexander

Today, I’m talking with Triad member Clayton Alexander. Clayton is one of the most intentional leaders I know and has learned how to effectively invest in (and empower) his team. As a result, his business has seen exponential growth. And the best part is, he isn’t the one that has to handle everything himself. For context, in 2021, his company brought in $60M of new assets, 80% of which came from him. As you can imagine, the business consumed his life and resulted in massive burn out. Compare that to one year later… After making some major changes, the firm did $78M of new assets, and less than 50% came from him. The big difference? He learned how to let go of his ego, empower his team, and get the heck out of their way!  3 of the biggest insights from Clayton Alexander … How Clayton used the Enneagram to rebuild the company culture, empower his team, and replace himself as the primary source of new business – leading to $78M of new assets in 2022. [see ep #13 with Ian Cron all about the Enneagram] How busy advisors can leverage the crucial but often-overlooked executive assistant role to create the best possible work-life balance.  Putting family first and the importance of making sure there are no cracks in the foundation of your most important relationships — including your relationship with yourself.JOIN THE DBDL INSIDER CREWTo become a DBDL Insider and get VIP access to free resources and exclusive content, text "DBDL" to 785-800-3235. *Message and data rates may apply. Raise your hand if you’ve ever sent or received a corporate gift? It’s pretty common practice in our industry to receive branded swag as a “thank you for doing business with us.”The problem is, most of the time, it’s meaningless junk. We’ve all heard it before: “There just aren’t enough hours in the day.” For advisors looking to run or scale a successful practice, efficiency is crucial — and time is king. Luckily, modern technology gives advisors easier access than ever to time-saving tools. But how should that technology be implemented? To answer that question, I’m sitting down with my longtime friend Corey Westphal, the founder and CEO of Mobile Assistant, a dictation service that helps advisors document meeting notes and information quickly, easily and safely. On average, people speak about 7 times faster than they talk. By dictating notes from seminars and meetings, advisors can save themselves hours each week. And while dictation software has been around for some time, Corey shares some modern advancements that have supercharged the technology.Corey and I also spend some time diving into how templates — both in technology and business — can help scale your practice. You’ll also hear us chat about ways to build a top-tier company culture, how to avoid critical mistakes when scaling, and how resilience is an unshakeable route to success. 3 of the biggest insights from Corey Westphal …Customer data is quickly becoming a goldmine asset for financial advisors. Advisors who adopt enhanced technology can create opportunities for more targeted financial advice and better client experiences. Actionable advice for building a culture that attracts world-class talent to your team — and strategies for leading and developing that talent once it’s on board. Growing pains are inevitable for advisors who scale their practice.
