EP114 - Dr. Nobody on ADHD

DR. NOBODY ON ADHD is an homage to all the hard working, courageous Doctors, Researchers, Experts and Authors who have been fighting hard to give a voice to the other side of this mostly one-sided, incomplete, pro-medication, pro-disorder narrative around this so-called disorder 'ADHD'. I acknowledge you for honoring your truth and for making the health and well-being of hundreds of thousands of children diagnosed with such a disorder your priority! You are a shining light in this darkness of selfish global interest groups. Thank You! For more information on this podcast, please visit www.adhdisover.com

EP113 - ADHD is not an illness and Ritalin is not a cure.

This episode is a deep dive into the scientific 'cherry-picking' that Pharma companies do when promoting their ADHD drugs to parents, featuring my special guest, Israeli scientist practitioner Dr. Yaakov Ophir. Dr. Ophir is releasing his new book 'ADHD is not an illness and Ritalin is not a cure' shortly and we talked about how his own son was diagnosed at the age of 4 1/2 and told to be on Ritalin. We also further explored a ludicrous study on ADHD & Covid that he and his colleague recently wrote a scientific rebuttal to. Other topics we touched upon include: - Psychologists' & Experts' conflicts of interest - Getting attacked by Israeli ADHD experts - How Science carries the burden of proof and more... Dr. Ophir is a clinical psychologist at the mental health center of Megilot Regional Council and a research associate at the Technion – Israel Institute of Technology. His main field of research concerns the relationships between psychopathology and technology. He develops Artificial Intelligence in the age of big data and digital technology (e.g., suicide risk detection from social media through Artificial Intelligence technologies) as well as the scientific validity of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). Dr. Ophir published over 20 peer-reviewed scientific articles and taught several academic courses at the University of Haifa, Reichman University, and the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. Dr. Ophir received his Ph.D. from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and he is currently working with leading world experts to develop the promising field of Cyber-psychology. His research involves computerized analyses of big-data sets and focuses on the relationships between Internet and Psychopathology. Specifically, Ophir aims to develop machine learning based tools for screening and diagnosing mental health conditions. In his clinical work, Dr. Ophir served as the director of the National Program for Children and Youth in the dead sea municipality and today he is providing short-term psychodynamic treatments as well as cognitive behavior therapies (CBT) to families and individuals in need. In the past years, following the diagnosis of his own son, Dr. Ophir delved into the field of Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). Through multiple writings and media interviews (mostly in Hebrew), Ophir, exposed dozens of theoretical and methodological flaws that characterize the research on ADHD and its related clinical practices. In his view, ADHD cannot be categorized as an objective brain deficit or as a psychiatric disorder and therefore he openly declares that ADHD should be removed from the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM). EP112 - Dr. Peter Breggin, MD on ADHD

This is a very powerful episode with Dr. Peter Breggin MD, a Harvard-trained psychiatrist and former Consultant at the National Institute of Mental Health who has been called “The Conscience of Psychiatry” for his many decades of successful efforts to reform the mental health field. His work provides the foundation for modern criticism of psychiatric diagnoses and drugs and leads the way in promoting more caring and effective therapies. His research and educational projects have brought about major changes in the FDA-approved ‘Full Prescribing Information' or labels for dozens of antipsychotic and antidepressant drugs. He continues to educate the public and professions about the tragic psychiatric drugging of America’s children. Dr. Breggin has authored dozens of scientific articles and more than twenty books, including “The Ritalin Fact Book”, “Talking back to Ritalin” and the bestseller Toxic Psychiatry. As a medical-legal expert, Dr. Breggin has unprecedented and unique knowledge about how the pharmaceutical industry too often commits fraud in researching and marketing psychiatric drugs. Most recently, Dr. Breggin has turned his attention to the misuse of the science surrounding COVID-19 and its origins in what he calls "global predators."  Dr. Breggin and his wife Ginger R. Breggin have written a new book, COVID-19 and the Global Predators: We are the Prey. EP111 - Dr. Stephen W. Porges on ADHD

THE CHRONICALLY THREATENED is an eye-opening episode with the creator of the Polyvagal Theory, Dr. Stephen Porges. In this episode, Dr. Porges and I talked about how the Polyvagal Theory relates to ADHD and why there is nothing 'wrong' with children who have been diagnosed with these so-called mental disorders (ADHD, ODD, Anxiety, Depression etc.). What if all these children were simply dealing with a nervous system that's locked in 'threat mode', due to chronically occurring traumatic events occurring in their environments. Now, when parents hear words such as threats or trauma, they typically only think of actual threats such as violence, divorce, abuse etc. But as Dr. Porges explains, for a highly sensitive child not much is needed to lock their nervous system while in threat mode... Listen in and hear for yourself to see if you can relate to what Dr. Porges shares around ADHD and his Polyvagal Theory. Stephen W. Porges, PhD, is Distinguished University Scientist at Indiana University, where he is the founding director of the Traumatic Stress Research Consortium within the Kinsey Institute.  He holds the position of Professor of Psychiatry at the University of North Carolina and Professor Emeritus at the University of Illinois at Chicago and the University of Maryland.  Dr. Porges served as president of both the Society for Psychophysiological Research and the Federation of Associations in Behavioral & Brain Sciences and is a former recipient of a National Institute of Mental Health Research Scientist Development Award.  He has published approximately 300 peer reviewed scientific papers across several disciplines including anesthesiology, biomedical engineering, critical care medicine, ergonomics, exercise physiology, gerontology, neurology, neuroscience, obstetrics, pediatrics, psychiatry, psychology, psychometrics, space medicine, and substance abuse. His research has been cited in approximately 40,000 peer review publications. In 1994 Dr. Porges proposed the Polyvagal Theory, a theory that links the evolution of the mammalian autonomic nervous system to social behavior and emphasizes the importance of physiological state in the expression of behavioral problems and psychiatric disorders. The theory is leading to innovative treatments based on insights into the mechanisms mediating symptoms observed in several behavioral, psychiatric, and physical disorders. He is the author of The Polyvagal Theory: Neurophysiological foundations of Emotions, Attachment, Communication, and Self-regulation (Norton, 2011), The Pocket Guide to the Polyvagal Theory: The Transformative Power of Feeling Safe (Norton, 2017),co-editor of Clinical Applications of the Polyvagal Theory: The Emergence of Polyvagal-Informed Therapies (Norton, 2018), and Polyvagal Safety (Norton, expected 2021). Dr. Porges is also the creator of a music-based intervention, the Safe and Sound Protocol™, which currently is used by more than 2000 therapists to improve spontaneous social engagement, to reduce hearing sensitivities, and to improve language processing, state regulation, and spontaneous social engagement. EP109 - Wisdom: The Myth of the Chemical Imbalance Theory

Do You Still Believe in the “Chemical Imbalance Theory of Mental Illness”? (counterpunch.org) It continues to come as a great surprise for many people to learn that psychiatry’s leading authorities, including the former longtime director of the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), have discarded the “chemical imbalance theory of mental illness”—an idea which has had a profound impact on millions of emotionally suffering people and on our entire society. Acceptance of the idea that a chemical imbalance causes depression transformed the public’s comfort level about taking antidepressants. With a belief that a chemical imbalance caused their depression, accompanied by repeatedly hearing that Prozac, Zoloft, and other selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) antidepressants “work to correct this imbalance,” it seemed irresponsible not to take these antidepressants. So, when exactly did psychiatry discard its chemical imbalance theory? While researchers began jettisoning it by the 1990s, one of psychiatry’s first loud rejections was in 2011, when psychiatrist Ronald Pies, Editor-in-Chief Emeritus of the Psychiatric Times, stated: “In truth, the ‘chemical imbalance’ notion was always a kind of urban legend—never a theory seriously propounded by well-informed psychiatrists.” Pies is not the highest-ranking psychiatrist to acknowledge the invalidity of the chemical imbalance theory. Thomas Insel was the NIMH director from 2002 to 2015, and in his recently published book, Healing (2022), he notes, “The idea of mental illness as a ‘chemical imbalance’ has now given way to mental illnesses as ‘connectional’ or brain circuit disorders.” While this latest “brain circuit disorder” theory remains controversial, it is now consensus at the highest levels of psychiatry that the chemical imbalance theory is invalid. The jettisoning of the chemical imbalance theory should have been uncontroversial twenty-five years ago, when it became clear to research scientists that it was a disproved hypothesis. In Blaming the Brain (1998), Elliot Valenstein, professor emeritus of psychology and neuroscience at the University of Michigan, detailed research showing that it is just as likely for people with normal serotonin levels to feel depressed as it is for people with abnormal serotonin levels, and that it is just as likely for people with abnormally high serotonin levels to feel depressed as it is for people with abnormally low serotonin levels. Valenstein concluded, “Furthermore, there is no convincing evidence that depressed people have a serotonin or norepinephrine deficiency.” But how many Americans heard about this? Ronald Pies claimed in the Psychiatric Times in 2014 that the American Psychiatric Association (APA), the guild of American psychiatrists, fulfilled its obligation to inform the general public with a 2000 public statement that begins: “The exact causes of mental disorders are unknown, but an explosive growth of research has brought us closer to the answers.” Pies did acknowledge that psychiatry should have been clearer and louder, “Shouldn’t psychiatrists in positions of influence have made greater efforts to knock down the chemical imbalance hypothesis, and to present a more sophisticated understanding of mental illness to the general public? Probably so.” Apparently, authorities at the highest levels have long known that the chemical imbalance theory was a disproven hypothesis, but they have viewed it as a useful “noble lie” to encourage medication use. Bruce E. Levine, a practicing clinical psychologist, writes and speaks about how society, culture, politics, and psychology intersect. His most recent book is A Profession Without Reason: The Crisis of Contemporary Psychiatry—Untangled and Solved by Spinoza, Freethinking, and Radical Enlightenment (2022). EP106 - Dr. Bruce Lipton on ADHD.

This is an episode with Dr. Bruce Lipton, an internationally recognized leader in bridging science and spirit. A stem cell biologist, the bestselling author of “The Biology of Belief” and a recipient of the 2009 Goi Peace Award, Dr. Lipton has been a guest speaker on hundreds of TV and radio shows, as well as a keynote presenter for national and international conferences. Dr. Lipton began his scientific career as a cell biologist. He received his Ph.D. from the University of Virginia at Charlottesville before joining the Department of Anatomy at the University of Wisconsin’s School of Medicine in 1973. His research at Stanford University’s School of Medicine, between 1987 and 1992, revealed that the environment, operating through the membrane, controlled the behavior and physiology of the cell, turning genes on and off. His discoveries, which ran counter to the established scientific view that life is controlled by genes, predicted one of today’s most important fields of study, the science of epigenetics. This is especially of interest to our ADHD movement since the field of epigenetics essentially proves that ADHD is not a so-called ‘genetic disorder’ and that nobody is predetermined to have it and in the worst-case scenario simply predisposed to it. But the power is with our minds and our ability to change our environments to better serve our individual human life experiences. Listen in to hear my conversation with the world's most passionate biologist I know, Dr. Bruce Lipton!! If you're into splitting atoms around ADHD and genes, I promise you that this is your episode!
