Episode 41 - Crying for Help.

CRYING FOR HELP is a reflective episode on how our society's preference for financial success trumps that of our children's mental health. Don't think so? Listen in and see for yourself how you might be thinking that most parents want their children's well-being to come first... when in reality they place grades, degrees and financial success above all things family! This NBC News article inspired me to reflect on this sad topic: https://www.nbcnews.com/tech/tech-news/great-attention-deficit-more-parents-seek-adhd-diagnosis-drugs-kids-n1257660 For more information on our podcast, please visit www.adhdisover.com Our supporting partner is Boku Superfood: www.bokusuperfood.com

Episode 37 - Attention Depleted Children

ATTENTION DEPLETED CHILDREN explores the notion that if we don't give our kids the right attention, they will feel depleted of it and can't 'pay attention' elsewhere in life. They will 'act out' and we will make them the problem, versus asking ourselves why they might be 'acting out'... What if our children were like little bank accounts and the currency we deposit and withdraw is attention? Wouldn't we wanna make sure that we don't withdraw more than we deposit? What kind of attention do we need to deposit? Join me as I dive deep into the meaning of attention, love and most of all acceptance. Episode 36 - The Family's Check Engine Light.

THE FAMILY'S CHECK ENGINE LIGHT is an episode that looks at our innate obedient auto-pilot parenting that leads to treating our children as 'less than' adults. When we stop our transgenerational 'hand-me-down' parenting styles, our children will have more space to unfold and become their highest potential, rather than become what we mold them into - based on a fear-driven approach that hopes to raise a healthy, happy and successful human being. Episode 35 - Not a mental Disorder?

NOT A MENTAL DISORDER is a follow up to episode #23 'ANTHROPOLOGISTS QUESTION ADHD'. This is an episode with biological anthropologists Kristen Syme from Washington State University, the co-author of the article "Researchers call for new approach to some mental disorders". In the paper, published in the Yearbook of Physical Anthropology, the Syme and her co-author Edward Hagen propose a new approach to mental illness that would be informed by human evolution, noting that modern psychology, and in particular its use of drugs like antidepressants, has largely failed to reduce the prevalence of mental disorders. For example, the global prevalence of major depressive disorder and anxiety disorders remained steady at 4.4% and 4% respectively from 1990 to 2010. The anthropologists argue that some conditions might be a mismatch between modern and ancestral environments such as attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, also known as ADHD. Hagen pointed out that there is little in our evolutionary history that accounts for children sitting at desks quietly while watching a teacher do math equations at a board. Other disorders such as depression, anxiety and PTSD are not hereditary, occur at any age and are often tied to threatening experiences. Hagen and Syme propose they may be responses to adversity and serve as signals, much like physical pain does, to make people aware of the need for help.
