Michele is a certified coach with a masters in social work, and a 25-year veteran in leadership as well as a trauma-responsive consultant whose career has been dedicated to the intersection of neurodiversity and trauma. Michele has worked as a professional coach with an ADHD speciality since 2008, became credentialed by the International Coach Federation (ICF) with an ADHD specialty in 2014, and has scaled foundational, evidence-based coaching programs for organizations and universities long before it was a widespread practice. This deep, longitudinal experience, built upon her formal social work education and thousands of client hours, informs her direct challenge to the efficacy of traditional, "top-down" cognitive models for ADHD. She posits that for this population—who can present as "masters of masking" while managing the debilitating "go, go, crash" cycle (anxiety-fueled productivity and crashing exhaustion)—the primary barrier is not a 'cognitive' deficit but a somatic one: a nervous system stuck in chronic dysregulation. Dr. Coffey received her Bachelor of Science degree from Brown University and her M.D. from Columbia University Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons in New York City. After completing her residency in psychiatry at Yale-New Haven Hospital, she had a successful private practice in New Haven for 30 years while serving on the clinical faculty at Yale Medical School and Yale New Haven Hospital. Her areas of specialty include depression, anxiety, eating disorders, trauma, relationships, parenting and ADHD as well as borderline and narcissistic personalities. She is also certified in Psychedelic Assisted Psychotherapy and has a particular expertise in psychopharmacology as well as several psychotherapeutic modalities, including Mentalization-based Psychotherapy and Relational Therapy. Dr. Coffey currently serves on the Mentalizing Initiative Board at UCLA and practices now here in Ojai, California.
