5G, edge computing and Huawei
Jamie takes the helm this week as the pod comes from the Big 5G Event in Denver. He’s joined by Iain and debutant Telecoms.com podder Mitch Wagner from Light Reading. Appropriately enough that kick off by talking about 5G, with a focus on edge computing. The move on to the transformation of the telecoms industry in general and just can’t resist an update of the Huawei situation.

Smartphones, Huawei and Three UK
In this week’s pod the usual suspects are reunited, but in a new location, as Telecoms.com and Light Reading moves offices. They start with a look at the global smartphone market and wonder what can be done to return it to growth. Huawei, inevitably, required further discussion especially as Jamie was recently hanging out with them in China, and they conclude with a look at Three UK, who Iain spent some time with in London recently.

Huawei, Apple/Qualcomm and 5G
With Jamie gallivanting around China he is replaced, appropriately enough, by Telecoms.com’s Wei Shi, for this episode. Wei starts by taking us though some research into the ownership of Huawei and what the significance of it might be. Scott then introduces an overview of the litigation between Apple and Qualcomm that recently came to a conclusion, while Iain reflects on a recent trip to Paris to hear Orange and its partners talk about commercialising 5G.

AI, regulation and 5G spectrum
Super-sub Ray plays a blinder off the bench once more as he crosses the topic of AI for Scott and Jamie to nod in. The guys kick off by exploring the use of AI in networks but also in the wider world and mull over the ethical implications of letting machines make decisions for us. Scott forces a pass to Jamie on the topic of regulation and the team makes full use of extra time to explore the topic of 5G spectrum.

5G, tech politics and notspots
The usual suspects kick off with a look at some of the first commercial 5G launches, with South Korea leading the way. While Scott is a bit confused by the tariffs, they nonetheless weigh up the pros and cons of paying for 5G. Conversation moves onto the political pressure tech companies are increasingly under, both internally and externally. They conclude with a look at ‘notspots’ i.e. areas that still lack mobile coverage.

Apple, Huawei and Europe
The core crew are back together and they kick off by discussing a recent Apple launch event in which the gadget giant announced a move into original content, financial services and news aggregation. The inevitable topic of Huawei followed and they concluded with a look at some other bits of news coming from Europe, including the dreaded ‘B’ word.

Cloud gaming, UK infrastructure and Huawei
Super-sub Ray joins Jamie and Scott this week and kicks things off with a look at Google’s new cloud gaming initiative Stadia and its implications for the telecoms industry. All this streaming and remote processing will put additional strain on infrastructure and they move on to look at some domestic developments in that area. They conclude, inevitably, with a review of the latest developments in the war between the US and Huawei.

Samsung, 5G, AI and Huawei
The guys are joined by special guest Dan Warren from Samsung in this week’s pod and start by getting his take on some of the main themes of the recent MWC show. Dan is head of 5G research at Samsung and so has forgotten more than Scott at least will ever know about the subject, but at least doesn’t think he’s entirely full of sh*t on the matter. Jamie picks his brains on the importance of edge computing, while Iain introduces the topic of open source and the elephant in the room that is Huawei is never far away.

Live from MWC 2019
Scott, Jamie and Iain take a moment to report from a bar in the middle of the Fira at Mobile World Congress 2019. They reflect on the biggest underlying themes of the show – spoiler alert: it’s 5G innit – and compare notes on their experiences, both during the days and long into the nights. As if that alone isn’t all the pod action you could ask for, they also get special guests Bengt Nordstrom and Mary Clark involved.
