241: Escape Your 9-5 Job With More Meaningful Work, with Steve Oehley

So many “successful” working professionals have followed the traditional path, yet ultimately find themselves deeply unfulfilled in their jobs. Our guest today was one such example. With his good grades at school, Steve Oehley went on to graduate from college to pursue a well-respected job as a veterinarian, only to find it brought him no joy. He has since embarked on an inspiring journey of self-awareness, founding Escape the nine to five, a podcast and coaching program designed for college-educated professionals looking to discover a career path that truly resonates with them. Given his background in veterinary medicine, Steve’s passion lies in sharing his life-changing framework with other professionals in the field. In this episode, Steve fills us in on the darker side of the veterinary profession and what can make it a stressful occupation for some. We learn about Steve’s background; what led him to the veterinary world and what moved him to pursue a new direction, as well as the inspiration for and evolution of ‘Escape the Nine to Five’ work. Steve has a very unique perspective with so many wonderful insights on what it means to escape the nine to five and how you, too, can find a more meaningful and rewarding professional direction. Simply pivoting without taking time to truly understand yourself can set you back, which is why Steve advocates for identifying your strengths within your own industry and moving forward from there. He shares advice for those looking to change careers, particularly those who feel stuck in current role and field. If these feelings of professional entrapment resonate with you, listen in to find out key steps to begin to explore shifting your career in a more productive and meaningful way.   Key Highlights From This Episode: Why Steve decided to narrow his target audience to medical professionals and veterinarians. 238: Anti-Time Management: The Power of Time-Tipping To Achieve Your Goals, with Richie Norton

Thank you for listening to our Finding Brave show, ranked in the Top 100 Apple Career Podcasts! “Instead of working and giving my life and my family the breadcrumbs of time, why don’t I turn it over? My family, my time, whatever it is that is important to you. It could be work or whatever you actually love. If you do that, here’s what happens: you think you won’t have time to do the things that actually have to get done to work and get paid. Not true. You actually [get more] creative in getting those things done in less time.” — Richie Norton Are you looking to find your motivation, prioritize your ideals, and create a flexible work-life lifestyle that allows you to enjoy expansive freedom? Today’s Finding Brave guest believes that you can do all of the above, no matter how busy or successful you are, using what he calls Anti-Time Management! Today, you’ll learn about the power of Time Tipping from award-winning author and serial entrepreneur, Richie Norton. As an executive coach to CEOs, Richie has been featured in Forbes, Bloomberg Businessweek, Inc., Entrepreneur, and the Huffington Post. Pacific Business News recognized Richie as one of the Top Forty Under 40 ‘Best and Brightest Young Businessmen’ in Hawaii, and he is considered one of the world’s leading thinkers and is included in Marshall Goldsmith’s Top 100 coaches community. He is also the CEO and Cofounder of PROUDUCT, an INC. 5000 company and a global entrepreneurship solution that helps businesses go from idea to market with full-service sourcing, product strategy, and end-to-end supply chain, and the author of several books, including Anti-Time Management, The Power of Starting Something Stupid, and Résumés Are Dead and What to Do About It.  Richie and I go back nine years to when I wrote about his second great book, The Power of Starting Something Stupid, for my Forbes blog in 2013. In today’s episode, he shares some of the valuable frameworks from his latest book, Anti-Time Management, and how you can implement them to stop managing your time and start prioritizing your attention. For poignant and practical advice from someone who has learned the value of living in a way that helps him lean into his fears, make a difference, and live without regret (and wants to help you do the same), make sure not to miss this powerful conversation with Richie Norton!   Key Points From This Episode: Insight into why Richie decided to write this book and why now. [06:46] Work for meaning, not money: what to do when the success you’ve had no longer works for you. [08:54] How you can use Time Tipping to learn to value your time, not time your values. [14:29] Overcome fears about money by rethinking how you get paid, not how much. [17:10] A look at how you can benefit if you stop managing time and start prioritizing attention. [19:20] Employing the concept of ‘project stacking’ to align your attention with your goals. [24:39] An understanding of Richie’s prolifics, practices, purposes, and payments framework. 237: Summer Pick #5: 5 Ways to Use Rejection To Fuel Your Success

Thank you for listening to our Finding Brave show, ranked in the Top 100 Apple Career Podcasts! “Now that I’m older, I truly think about it differently. Every single rejection you get, I have learned, if you listen and observe carefully without all the defensiveness and the ego getting hysterical, it can unlock amazing doors for you.” - Kathy Caprino  Rejection, both from others and from inner selves, is a common issue faced by the many thousands of women I have heard from and worked with. This is why in this episode of Finding Brave, I talk about the different aspects of rejection and how we can handle it in a new way - one that fuels and expands our success instead of crushing it.  How you handle and feel about rejection will directly determine the degree to which you can experience growth, fulfillment and excitement on the journey to your goals. Some time ago, I posted an image with a quote about rejection on LinkedIn, and it resonated with many folks, with over 55,000 views and 1,100 likes in just a few days.   It may be hard to believe sometimes, but rejection can and will lead to amazing success if you approach it the right way. Today I share my own personal, and often painful, experiences around being rejected, and I share 5 positive lessons rejection can offer that can fuel your success, rather than demoralize you and set you back.  As always I would love to hear how this episode resonates with you, and I’d love to hear how you’ve overcome rejection in ways that opened door to more thrilling opportunities that you’re grateful for. Please reach out to me by email, or on social media via LinkedIn, or on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram or Pinterest to say hello and share your ideas!   Highlights from this Episode: The ways I reacted to rejection when I was younger versus how I think about it today [6:07] How rejection can lead to making valuable changes to your idea, project or product [9:17] Why the timing, and actually being ready for success, matters so much [14:36] The reason I’m such a fan of research regarding new products and programs but why your friends shouldn’t be the ones you turn to for it [16:47] The way to approach feedback so that you’re not limiting your own success unintentionally [18:57] How you can begin to recognize how amazing you are and why this is necessary to live the best life you can [21:42] What to identify in order to share a more authentic self [24:28] How to know when “perfectionistic overfunctioning” is holding you back [30:02]   Resources Mentioned:  Kathy’s Career Path Self-Assessment Kathy’s Close Your Power Gaps private coaching program Kathy’s article – 3 Key Steps to Moving from Self-Rejection Toward Self-Love Kathy’s TEDx Talk “Time to Brave Up” Kathy video and post: What Is Feminism and Why Do So Many Men and Women Hate It Kathy’s Forbes post: How Being Raised by a Narcissist Affects Your Self-Esteem Kathy’s Forbes interview: What Selling Three Million Copies of ‘The Dance of Anger’ Has Taught Harriet Lerner Kathy’s Forbes interview: What the Most Rejected Person in the World Can Teach About Triumph and Creating Work We Love featuring Daniel Seddiqui     CHECK OUT MY “MOST POWERFUL YOU” VIDEO COURSE! 236: Summer Pick #4: How to Have Those Difficult But Crucial Conversations with Friends and Family, with Joseph Grenny

Thank you for listening to our Finding Brave show, ranked in the Top 100 Apple Career Podcasts! “The goal of the conversation is not to convince. It’s not to compel, and it’s not to control. It’s not to try to get the other person to think something different. As soon as we believe somebody is trying to control us in that kind of way, we resist. So the very effort to convince, it makes you less convincing.” – Joseph Grenny Contrary to how many people feel in our world today, it is possible to tell the truth and avoid alienating a friend or colleague or engendering terrible and painful conflict. With so much distrust among family, friends, colleagues and our leaders, it’s vital to not to take the two standard approaches – being silent or violent — on core issues but instead, we need to learn the essential skills behind expressing yourself candidly yet cordially.  Today’s Finding Brave expert guest reveals how it’s not having different opinions that’s the problem in our conflicts, rather it’s how and why we express those opinions, and the approach we take before even entering the conversation.  Joseph Grenny is a four-time New York Times bestselling author, dynamic keynote speaker, and leading social scientist for business performance. Joseph has spoken at some of the world’s premier leadership conferences. His books have been translated into 28 languages, are available in 36 countries, and have generated results for 300 of the Fortune 500. I had the honor of interviewing Joseph and David Maxfield in my Forbes blog in 2015 in a piece on Gender Bias Is Real: Women’s Perceived Competency Drops Significantly When Judged as Being Forceful, on their groundbreaking research on gender bias, and I’ve often quoted the information that their research uncovered that proved gender bias is not imagined, it’s real – and their research showed on how women’s perceived competency and perceived worth drops exponentially more than men’s when they are are perceived as forceful or assertive. I’ve featured their work in my TEDx talk Time to Brave Up, and in my new book The Most Powerful You and my Most Powerful You Course which is why I’m so excited to speak with Joseph today and bring you his expert insights and perspectives on navigating crucial conversations. This episode is part of our “Summer Pick series” which features a selection of the most popular and downloaded shows we’ve aired in the past several years.   Highlights from this Episode: Why Joseph was first drawn to topics around communication and crucial conversations [5:36] The real reasons he feels that many of the conversations happening today are so volatile [9:01] Why your internal and external approach to a conversation will often be the key to achieving a successful outcome with the other person [12:57] The way that our fears, or the threats that we perceive, will impact how a conversation unfolds [15:22] A technique he recommends to disarm perceived threats by both parties [16:06] The 3 different types of stories we tell ourselves, and how to begin mastering them today [20:30] A time that Joseph made a stand to have his voice heard, and the role that setting ground rules beforehand had in doing this [23:44] What the goal of every conversation should be, and what we shouldn’t be trying to do [27:24] How I was able to diffuse a difficult situation that I faced in my professional career [32:18]   For More Information: https://josephgrenny.com/  www.vitalsmarts.com https://www.linkedin.com/company/vitalsmarts/  https://twitter.com/vitalsmarts https://www.instagram.com/vitalsmarts/    Resources Mentioned: Ready to become more confident, powerful and successful in work you love?   CHECK OUT MY “MOST POWERFUL YOU” VIDEO COURSE! 235: Summer Pick #3: Do Less to Live and Work Happier and Better, with Kate Northrup

What brings you joy? What makes you feel energized? What makes you, you? Loving yourself starts with understanding yourself and learning to accept yourself for who you are, rather than fixating on who you think you “should” be. Self-love is one of the most powerful things that we, as human beings, can do to enhance our lives. Today’s guest is Kate Northrup; entrepreneur, bestselling author, speaker, and mother who has built a multimedia digital empire with her husband which supports hundreds of thousands of ambitious women to light up the world without burning out!  When it comes to work, less is more! According to research, working 49 hours+ per week is linked to a decline in mental health. This negatively impacts productivity because happier people are more productive. During this episode, Kate explains the personal experiences that led her to discover how to do less to live better. Nobody is lying on their deathbed wishing they had more money; give yourself permission to be happier!    Key Points From This Episode:   Kate shares the personal experiences that motivated her to do less. [04:32] Self-sourced scheduling; a brief overview of the system that Kate created. [08:30] How tracking her cycle catalyzed Kate’s journey of reconnecting with herself. [10:23] You are what you are, love yourself for that. [13:04] Advice for figuring out what to let go of. [15:22] Exploring the hyper-productivity trauma response. [18:37] What research shows about the impact of working hours on women’s mental health. [23:47] The benefits of shorter working hours, and how to take radical responsibility for your life (even if you work in a corporate environment). [24:23] The three most important lessons that Kate has learned during her life so far (and the number one thing she has learned from being a mother). Become The Most Powerful You! In reading a great deal about leadership today, and interviewing top leadership experts, I’m recognizing a disappointing trend - that the general concept and understanding of leadership has become so vague and watered down that most of it isn’t helpful at all, and it’s not suited to a majority of women who want to lead differently. The Most Powerful You training goes deeper. It helps you recognize and understand more about yourself as a person and the leader you want to be, then take empowering, transformative actions to operate in your role in a way that takes your leadership and your career higher, making the impact you dream to. If you truly want to help your team, staff and organization become “The Most Powerful We,” this is the right training for you.  Take this course individually or bring it to your workforce and teams today! Thank you for listening to our Finding Brave show, ranked in the Top 100 Apple Career Podcasts! “Whether you’re on an athletic team, a sales force, or a symphony orchestra, you better be honest about what you think about yourself. What you think about yourself and what you think about all the things that happen day by day, that’s what constitutes your confidence.” - Dr. Nate Zinsser This Summer, I’m delighted to offer you our “Summer Pick” series which brings you a selection of the most popular listener favorites from the past few years of shows. Today’s episode originally aired as a two-part installment on January 27th and February 3rd, 2022. Hope you enjoy them! Confidence is a character trait that has relatively little to do with what happens to you, but rather it’s a function of how you think. Today’s Finding Brave guest reveals how you can change your level of confidence, but first you must be aware of certain things. You absolutely can develop confidence for any situation that you care to, and our guest shares the ways that confident performers think differently from the average person in order to do this. Dr. Nate Zinsser is an expert in the psychology of human performance who consults for individuals and organizations seeking a competitive edge. Nate’s latest book, The Confident Mind: A Battle-Tested Guide for Unshakable Performance, hit shelves January 2022, and has been endorsed by two-time Super Bowl Champion and MVP Eli Manning, bestselling authors Jon Krakauer and Steven Pressfield, and US Olympic Bobsled Head Coach Mike Kohn. Nate was a regular consultant to the Philadelphia Flyers and New York Giants for twelve seasons and has been a keynote speaker for General Electric, Facebook, McDonald’s, Staples, UBS, Major League Baseball, the NBA, and many more, as well as a consultant for the FBI Academy, the U.S. Army World Class Athlete Program, (mentoring four Olympic medalists), the U.S. Army Recruiting Command, and the U.S. Army Marksmanship Unit. Since 1992, he has directed a cutting-edge applied sport psychology program at the United States Military Academy’s Center for Enhanced Performance, personally conducting over seventeen thousand individual training sessions and seven hundred team training sessions for cadets seeking the mental edge for athletic, academic, and military performance. He also helped launch the highly successful magazine Sports Illustrated for Kids and was presented with an American Library Association award for his 1991 children’s book Dear Dr. Psych: A Kid’s Guide to Handling Sports Problems.
