MBP #86 Minnesota

The man named after the land with 10,000 lakes has been a force on the bass scene for nearly a decade. Although he’s made a name for himself in the electronic music space, Minnesota’s (aka Christian Bauhofer) musical journey started with heavy doses of classic rock, emo and screamo. He was heavily influenced by the psychedelic style of rock legends including Pink Floyd and Led Zeppelin and cites them as inspiration for what would become his own sound. “The songs were journeys and I really like the epicness and the trip the song took you on,” he says. Spending most of his early life in Minnesota, It was not until Christian relocated to Santa Cruz, California in 2007 where he first discovered the underground electronic music scene via renegade parties that would be thrown in the redwoods of the Santa Cruz mountains. “That community / subculture was really my main influence into the music. A lot of other artists were immersed in the Santa Cruz community like G Jones, The Glitch Mob and Eprom. Crews would bring out a generator, Dj equipment and a few lights and play music until 10AM. We were really blown away.” Christian would soon throw his own renegade parties in Santa Cruz to provide himself with a forum to DJ. “I wanted to play music, but could never get booked, so I teamed up with some friends and we started to throw are own parties. I feel very lucky to have experienced this underground scene before electronic music and hit the mainstream.” ***Apologies on some of the audio quality here ladies and gents. Bill and Minnesota both had some issues during recording that we tried our best to address.*** Minnesota Links: https://www.twitch.tv/minnesota_bass https://soundcloud.com/minnesota Mr. Bill’s Links: Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/mrbillstunes https://live.mrbillstunes.com/ https://discord.gg/ySjhgWQ https://mrbill.bandcamp.com/ https://www.youtube.com/user/MrBillsTunes Podcast Produced & Edited by: https://twitter.com/303FuMo

MBP #85 Mick Gordon

Mick Gordon is a composer and sound designer whose compositions aim to transcend the perceptual boundary between music and its context. Mick’s work considers the role of music as a translation of the world in which it exists rather than a simple accompaniment. Through creativity, interpretation and collaboration he develops a meaningful exchange between the visual world and music culminating in the authorship of a unified original work of art. Mick utilizes a broad range of modern musical sound design and traditional composition techniques in order to be unconstrained by any singular genre. His music is inspired by the connection between the audience and the experience and seeks to overcome the separation between music and the world in which it exists. Recently, Mick scored the video game DOOM - the return of id Software’s seminal first-person shooter. To illustrate the game’s portrayal of Hell and its insidious power he explored the role of energy in sound production and how the physical properties of analogue equipment can be imparted onto digital sources. His award-winning interactive score for Microsoft’s reboot of KILLER INSTINCT featured a myriad of performers from around the globe. Mick collaborated with a viking choir in Sweden, representatives of the Nez Perce tribe in Idaho and numerous other performers, vocalists, lyricists and translators to produce its Amazon best-selling soundtrack. Mick’s score for the video game, WOLFENSTEIN: THE NEW ORDER interweaves modern musical sound design techniques with 1960s style record production. He synthesised field recordings and transformed them into new physically playable instruments to create unique musical palettes. The score explores the role of distortion as a modern musical device. The process of overdriving various pieces of analogue equipment into extremes to create tension was used to represent the game’s chaotic villain, Deathshead. Additionally, to musically represent the rebellious plight of the heroes against their oppressors, Mick utilised vintage instruments, microphones and recording equipment to create music inspired by protest and freedom movement songs of the 1960s.
