100: How To Talk To Your Aging Parents About Money with Cameron Huddleston
We all know we need to talk to our parents about money. We all know that we need to get their affairs in order in case something happens, especially as they get older. However, life has a tendency to get in the way, we table these conversations for later, and we sweep them under the rug. This is a problem for many reasons, but no fact drives this home faster than a Fidelity study in which 69% of parents said they expected one of their children to manage their money, yet over a third of the children surveyed had no idea they were expected to fill that role. Cameron Huddleston is on a mission to help facilitate these tough conversations. He's the author of Mom and Dad, We Need to Talk: How To Have Essential Conversations with Your Parents About Their Finances. It's an excellent, step-by-step guide to help you stop stalling and make plans with advice from Cameron's own experiences as a daughter and financial expert, as well as other financial, legal, and elder care experts. Today, Cameron joins the podcast to discuss the challenges she faced with her own aging parents that led her to write the book. We talk about why these conversations are so taboo (and what to do if your family pushes back on having them). She also gives a number of resources you can share with your parents to help you get a grasp on what their finances really look like, how to keep them protected from scammers in old age, and how to take action if your parents have already become impaired. While many people devote time to travel after they retire, even more retirees are now finding new countries to call home - to enjoy an even better quality of life and standard of living. In their mid-fifties, Keith and Tina Paul decided to leave Southern California to make Ecuador their home. Before retirement, Keith was the Chief Technology Officer for the University of Southern California Medical Center, and Tina owned her own neuropathic medicine practice in California. Since moving to Ecuador, they have also visited over 30 countries in the last year, as well as all 50 United States. Today, Keith and Tina join the podcast to talk about why they decided to retire abroad in their mid-fifties, the qualities that a person needs to have to adapt well to retiring abroad, and the unique financial planning that makes their lifestyle both fun and sustainable in ways that would have never been possible had they stayed in California. 094: Empowering Widows Financially with Dr. Kathleen Rehl
Almost every financial advisor faces a time in their career during which their clients' spouses pass away, and many advisors struggle to know how to both provide support and guidance to their newly widowed clients' surviving partners. In fact, as many as 70% of widows change financial advisors after the death of their spouse, and a lack of understanding is almost always the reason. After Dr. Kathleen Rehl's late husband passed, she set out on a journey to help empower widows, as well as the advisors who work with them. She is the author of Moving Forward On Your Own: A Financial Guidebook For Widows. Though many of the guests I've had on this podcast are authors, this is one of the few books that was fast, easy to read, and full of great insight. Today, Kathleen joins the podcast to talk about how becoming a widow herself completely changed how she works with this demographic, how profound loss affects the decision-making process, and the common mistakes that get so many financial advisors fired after the death of a spouse. You'll also hear stories about how Kathleen's helped her own clients through this difficult time in their lives to pass their values, hopes, and dreams on to the next generation. 091: How Baby Boomers are Reinventing Retirement with Dr. Sara Geber
The word "retirement" inspires a lot of negative feelings in people of all ages, but especially baby boomers. More than ever, retirees want to be seen as youthful, want to continue to be useful, and want to continue doing something that gives them meaning and purpose. Few people understand this better than Dr. Sara Geber. Sara is the author of Essential Retirement Planning for Solo Agers: A Retirement and Aging Roadmap for Single and Childless Adults. She brings an extensive background in psychology to her experience as a retirement coach, and her book provided me with a lot of insight into how I could better serve the families I work with day in and day out. Today, Sara joins the podcast to talk about why retirement needs reinventing (and how it's already happening), the most common mistakes solo agers make in trying to transition into retirement, and the many new options available as they enter this stage of life.
