285: The Path to a Purposeful ‘Unretirement’ with Richard Eisenberg
Today I’m talking to Richard Eisenberg. Richard started his career as a finance writer at Money back in 1978 and has been writing about personal finance, money, and retirement for decades. He recently left his post as the Senior Web Editor of the Money & Security and Work & Purpose channels for Next Avenue. However, in what he calls his “unretirement,” he’s started writing a new column for MarketWatch, contributed to Next Avenue, and become the co-host of the Friends Talk Money podcast. While some finance writers want to help rich people get richer, Richard has focused his career on helping others manage their money better and make smarter financial decisions. In a world where there’s so much more information, financial products, and opinions than ever before, Richard has a wealth of knowledge and a proven track record at sifting through the data to provide sound and relatable financial advice. In this conversation, Richard and I discuss how to make sense of the tremendous amount of financial information and articles available today, the 5 keys to a successful semi-retired or unretired lifestyle, and how to discover new meaning and purpose in the next stage of your life. In this podcast interview, you’ll learn: How finance–and finance education–has changed over the course of Richard’s 40+ year career. How to identify whether you can trust the author of a piece of financial writing and what to look out for. The difference between a midlife crisis and a midlife financial crisis. How Richard defines unretirement. Why Richard decided to “unretire” and what fellow “unretirees” should be looking out for in their own lives. The 5 keys to a successful ‘unretirement’. How Richard defines purpose–and why he believes that everyone who can should unretire. 282: A New Theory on What Causes Inflation with Economist John Cochrane
Today, I’m talking to John Cochrane. John is an economist and the Rose-Marie and Jack Anderson Senior Fellow at the Hoover Institution. He’s a former Professor of Finance at the University of Chicago Booth School of Business and the Department of Economics, and the author of the Grumpy Economist blog. John’s work is focused on monetary policy and the fiscal theory of the price level, and he’s written at length about macroeconomics, health insurance, econometrics, and regulations, to name just a few topics. In his upcoming book, The Fiscal Theory of the Price Level, he proposes the thesis that government debt is a core driver of inflation, that high interest rates can make deficits worse, and fiscal policy has to come with monetary policy to solve this problem. In our conversation, John and I talk about why he’s still optimistic about the long-term outlook despite almost always seeing storm clouds on the horizon, why he doesn’t like to use the word capitalism, and how retirees can learn from his research to best protect themselves from rampant inflation in the years to come. In this podcast interview, you’ll learn: How John maintains a positive attitude in the face of what can seem like neverending bad news and idiotic economic policy. Why the entrepreneurial spirit of the United States feels more stifled than ever before. Why risk management is so important for retirees right now. The one thing John would do right now if he were Fed chairman. John’s tax strategy advice for anyone looking to future-proof their portfolio. Why John thinks the US dollar will continue to be the global currency. 279: Rejecting Ageism with Ashton Applewhite
Today, I’m talking to Ashton Applewhite. Ashton is an author, journalist, speaker, and activist who is on a mission to raise awareness and push back against ageism. She is the author of This Chair Rocks: A Manifesto Against Ageism and Cutting Loose: Why Women Who End Their Marriages Do So Well. Her work was inspired by a project in which she interviewed older people in the workforce, learning about longevity and happiness–and discovered that most of her ideas about late life were either off base or completely wrong. She became fascinated by why ageism is so prominent, who benefits from it, and what she could do to change people’s perceptions and ideas around it. Before becoming an advocate against ageism, Ashton wrote the best-selling, mass-market book of 1983, Truly Tasteless Jokes, and was the first-ever author to have four books on the New York Times bestseller list at the same time. She’s been recognized as an expert on aging by the New York Times, NPR, The New Yorker, and the American Society on Aging, and she’s contributed to Harper’s, the Guardian and many more. In today’s conversation, Ashton joins the podcast to talk about why we’re so unnecessarily afraid of getting older, what drives those fears, and how to make aging a lot less fearsome (and a whole lot more interesting)–and the fascinating things she’s learned on her remarkable journey. 276: Planning For Life After Work, Previously Known As Retirement with Don Ezra
Today, I'm talking to Don Ezra. Don's illustrious career in the insurance and finance industries began in the 70’s and his achievements are numerous. His 26-year career at Russell Investments culminated when he became its Co-Chair of Global Consulting. In 2010, Don "graduated" to a part-time schedule that gave him more freedom to pursue a wide variety of other interests. Since then, Don has also served on the Joint Investment Committee of Margaret A Cargill Philanthropies. He's been on the advisory board of the World Pension Summit and on the Scientific Advisory Board of Manifold Partners, LLC. He's also become an occasional contributor to the Financial Times, where he's the author of a column called The Art of Investing. Don's passion is to teach others about personal financial planning, investing, and the economic and subjective aspects of happiness, especially as it pertains to life after full-time work–what some of us still call "retirement." In his newest book, Life Two, he helps readers conquer their irrational fears, put themselves in the driver's seat, get an understanding of their financial situation, and take control of this extraordinary period of life. In our conversation, Don and I talk about why your identity is not defined by what you get paid to do, the irrational fears so many people face as they transition into retirement, and how to find real, lasting happiness at every stage of life.
