315: Women in Retirement: Improving Long-Term Financial Security Through Education & Advocacy with Cindy Hounsell

In today’s conversation, I’m joined by Cindy Hounsell. Cindy is the President of the Women’s Institute for a Secure Retirement (WISER), a nonprofit working to help women secure retirement income and educate people about the inequities that disadvantage women when they retire. You may have encountered Cindy’s amazing work in a wide variety of publications, including The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, Forbes/PBS Next Avenue, Barrons, U.S. News and World Report, CNN, CNBC, and NPR’s 1A, All Things Considered, Morning Edition and Marketplace. She’s also been named as an Influencer in Aging by PBS-Next Avenue, received a lifetime achievement award by the Plan Sponsor Council of America, and been named by Money magazine as one of its 40 Money Heroes. In our conversation, Cindy and I dive into the major shifts in women’s finances and retirement today. We discuss the pros and cons of saving for retirement as a woman, how things are changing in the era of stay-at-home parents of both sexes, and what all women should know about creating a financial plan. In this podcast interview, you’ll learn: How Cindy’s own experience at an airline that froze pensions inspired her to launch a career in retirement. What you can do for your children and grandchildren to help them become more financially literate. Why it’s so important to get your paperwork in place, no matter how good your relationship (or life) seems right now. What you should know about the retirement-related bills currently moving through Congress. What Cindy would like to see happen in the years (and decades) to come to empower women when it comes to their own finances. 312: Innovating Your Retirement: How to Stay Engaged in Your Second Half of Life with Chris Farrell

Today, I’m speaking with Chris Farrell. Chris is a leading expert on the subject of working into the years we once called traditional retirement. In his most recent book, Purpose and a Paycheck: Finding Meaning, Money, and Happiness in the Second Half of Life, he debunks the myth that aging populations are a burden on our economy–and demonstrates how “retirees” can create, innovate, and stay engaged.  You may have encountered Chris’s work as a journalist for PBS Next Avenue and the Star Tribune, a contributor to Bloomberg Businessweek, The New York Times, Kiplinger’s, and other publications. Or perhaps as a commentator on Marketplace Morning Report, or as the host of Conversations on the Creative Economy on Minnesota Public Radio. I’m a big fan of his work and thrilled to chat with him today. In this conversation, Chris shares the story of how he went from being a merchant seaman to getting his graduate degree at the London School of Economics, why aging populations aren’t dead weight, and how retirees can discover newfound purpose–and make a difference–while contributing to the economy later in life. One more thing before we get started. We’ve got a bunch of copies of Chris’ book, Purpose and a Paycheck: Finding Meaning, Money, and Happiness in the Second Half of Life and we're going to send them out until they're all gone! Here's all you have to do... Step 1.) Subscribe to the podcast and leave an honest rating & review over on iTunes. Step 2.) Text BOOK, that’s B-O-O-K to 866-482-9559 for a link to our book request page, complete the form and we will ship you the book for free. It’s that simple! In this podcast interview, you’ll learn: What led Chris to become so interested in writing about retirement, happiness, meaning, and purpose. How an aging population and a low birth rate are fundamentally shifting our economy. Why more people in their 50s and 60s are starting businesses now than ever before–and why so many people who opt for traditional retirement “unretire” within just a few years. How retirees can pass on knowledge to younger generations and leave behind a personal and professional legacy. The importance of budgeting for health care coverage for retirees looking to bridge the gap when retiring before age 60. 309: America’s National Debt: What it Means for Your Retirement with Former U.S. Comptroller General, David Walker

Today, I’m talking to David Walker. David served as Comptroller General of the United States under both Bill Clinton and George W. Bush. Since leaving government in 2008, he has been focused on spreading awareness and talking about the national debt. He was the subject of the film I.O.U.S.A., named by Roger Ebert as one of the best documentaries of 2008, and is the author of a number of books, including Comeback America: Turning the Country Around and Restoring Fiscal Responsibility. I saw David speak back in 2010, and I’ve always been a huge admirer of his work. He’s a huge believer in the importance of reeling in our debt. In his new book, America in 2040: Still a Superpower? A Pathway to Success, he compares the United States to the Roman Empire in decline and the steps that we can take to avoid that outcome.  In today’s conversation, David and I dive deep into the matter of the national debt. You’ll learn not just why David thinks debt matters, but how it impacts us as individuals–and what we can do about it. You’ll learn about how our national debt, high taxes, and inflation are all inextricably linked, the policies that need to change, and how to factor the challenges that might come into your retirement plan. How debt contributes to out of control inflation and recession. Why taxes are all but guaranteed to go up so long as we fail to address our national debt. What needs to happen to reel in healthcare and education costs. How David has planned for retirement–and what retirement means to him. 306: Sharing Your Wisdom in Your Second Act with Chip Conley

Today, I’m talking to Chip Conley. Chip founded Joie de Vivre Hospitality at the age of 26, turned it into the second largest boutique hotel brand in America, and sold the business 24 years later. Soon after, the founders of Airbnb came to him for advice, and he joined them as their Head of Global Hospitality and Strategy before settling into a role as their Strategic Advisor for Hospitality and Leadership. He’s also the founder of Modern Elder Academy, the world’s first “midlife wisdom school,” with a campus in Baja California Sur and one soon to open in Santa Fe. In his most recent book, Wisdom at Work: The Making of a Modern Elder, Chip writes about the value of humility, emotional intelligence, and wisdom–and how companies like Airbnb benefit from skills that can only come with age. In this conversation, Chip and I discuss the identity crises that come with exits of all sizes and the lessons he learned by joining Airbnb, how our calling evolves over the course of our lives, and how to find (and take advantage of) the incredible opportunities that life transitions give us. GET A FREE COPY OF CHIP’S BOOK, WISDOM AT WORK! In this podcast interview, you’ll learn: What it means to be a modern elder. The difference between calling, purpose, and meaning. How Chip is working to teach wisdom at Modern Elder Academy. What midlife is and isn’t–and why Chip believes “midlife crisis” to be a misnomer. The equations that can help us identify (and learn from) our emotions. Chip’s advice for anyone over the age of 50 who’s thinking about taking a big leap.
