The False Dichotomy with Lisa Mullinax CDBC Part 1
In response to the “trainer wars” between the balanced and force-free communities Sarah and past podcast guest (and friend) Lisa Mullinax sit down to talk about the place where ethics meet efficacy. Lisa and Sarah do not claim a label as trainers (neither balanced nor force-free), and have both undergone an evolution in the behavior field that has helped them to arrive at a place free of dogma and full of compassion.
Know the opinions expressed here are vulnerable and honest, and there can’t be enough time for all nuance to be present in all conversations. Neither Sarah nor Lisa represent anything other than themselves in their thoughts expressed herein.

“Enriched to Death”?
You might have seen a post titled “Enriched to Death” being shared around social media in the last week. Of course, this is a misnomer because enrichment by definition is life-enhancing. But why is this post viral? Is there a reason we are worried about this?

Trainer Showcase: Charlotte Hoberg
Charlotte Hoberg CPDT-KA owns and operates Sit ‘n Stay Training in Maryland. She specializes in reactivity and sport foundations and primarily offers board and train. She trains for and competes in IGP with her personal dogs. For the podcast we discussed a mixed breed dog named Tate who had developed multiple problematic behavior concerns in a shelter including dog-directed reactivity, handler-directed aggression in certain contexts, and problematic fixations on food, humans, and any other resource. His inability to rest or settle in the home was just an added bonus!

Exercise or Relaxation?
It is a common adage amongst dog trainers: “your dog doesn’t need more exercise, he needs to be trained to relax.” The fear being spread is that by providing more exercise we will create super athletes whose exercise needs are impossible to meet. But is there truth to that statement? Join Sarah and canine sports medicine veterinarian Dr Leslie Eide as they explore this question.
Leslie Eide DVM, CCRT practices north of Seattle WA and has a variety of canine conditioning and exercise programs available online. She can be found at www.thetotalcanine.com and at https://www.facebook.com/thetotalcanine

Reinforcement, Birds, and Screaming Tollers with Liza Rader KPA-CTP
Liza Rader is a KPA-CTP and the owner-operator of Focus Dogs in British Columbia. Their special interest in high-drive hunting dogs is why Sarah sat down to ask, “can we train ‘instinct’ sports from a positive reinforcement lens?” It got more interesting than anyone imagined, enjoy.
Liza mentions several trainers who have influenced their work, you can find them:

Choice vs Structure
You’ve heard you should give an anxious or otherwise dysregulated dog structure, but you;ve also heard you should give them choice and control. Aren’t these things in conflict? Which camp is right?
