The Energiewende and the new government
Whichever way you look at it, Germany is going to play a highly significant role if Europe is to meet its climate targets by 2050. After 16 years of rule by Angela Merkel came to an end at the end of 2021, where climate policies increasingly took a back seat, a new coalition government, lead by Olaf Scholz, has placed decarbonisation of the economy at the centre of the cross-party agreement. Europe's largest economy is aiming to reach net-zero by 2045 - but can the country achieve this and how? And can Germany then also lead from the front on the international stage? This week, Jan, Michaela and David are joined by Claudia Kemfort, professor of energy economics and energy policy at the German Institute for Economic Research and Leuphana University to discuss how Germany's new government, and its economy, are tackling the energy transition. A new utility
To advance the energy transition, utilities are a vital part of getting clean energy to where it is needed at the times it is needed. Whether it is helping integrate EVs or heat pumps, or to protect consumers from sudden price increases, utilities can make a significant contribution to decarbonise the energy system. This week, the team is joined by Greg Jackson, founder and CEO of Octopus Energy, a UK utility with nearly 2.5 million customers, placing it among the largest power companies in the country. In our discussion with Greg, we discuss the energy price crisis, the role of consumers, digitalisation and heat pumps.Listen and subscribe to Watt Matters wherever you get podcasts. How did we get here and where are we going?
From FORESIGHT Climate & Energy, Watt Matters is a podcast all about the energy transition and the shift to a decarbonised economy. In this episode, David, Michaela and Jan discuss where we are, how we got here and where we are going as the global economy continues its quest to ditch carbon emissions by mid-century. The idea of an energy transition has gained a lot of traction in the last few years, having barely been spoken about just a few years ago. The levers of the energy transition are varied but this indicates the interconnectedness of the shift to net zero, which is why this podcast was launched: to connect the dots of the energy transition and show how it is all interrelated.
