How Location Specific Reinforcement Markers Will Improve Your Dog Training! #151
Visit us at shapedbydog.com We can use food, toys, or activities our dogs love, like swimming or running, as rewards in dog training. To get an unbelievable transfer of value from that reinforcement, we can use words that tell our dogs what they are doing is correct, how they will be reinforced and where that reinforcement will be. We’re covering Location Specific Reinforcement Markers and how to use them. It’s possible for everyone to double the value of rewards and grow their dog’s understanding when there is clarity about the specifics of release cues. In the episode you'll hear: • How my dog would leave position on a click when I first learned about clicker training. • That I learned to mark for position and reward for behavior from Bob and Marian Bailey. • How I started using Location Specific Reinforcement Markers in the mid-nineties with Buzz for his start line. • How to use activities for location specific reinforcement in dog training. • About the nuances of using “search”, “get it”, “bring me” and “break” as release cues and when I use “wit wit”. • How I use different toys and names for those toys for training directionals like left and right for agility. • In the episode, you’ll hear Why the tone of your words is vital for your dog’s clarity and that each should have unique sounds. • An exercise you can do to try out Location Specific Reinforcement Markers in your training. • That we can have many release cues and permissions as Location Specific Reinforcement Markers. Adding Mindset To Your Dog Training Tools: Who Do You Become? #150
Visit us at shapedbydog.com One of my most favorite things to talk about is mindset because, to me, it’s everything in life. Mindset is nothing to do with dog training, yet it has everything to do with how successful you will be. Dog training is an unregulated industry, and people can say or do whatever they want. There are many ways to train dogs, and dogs will learn despite what’s being done. Each method of training a dog will impact us personally, so we need to consider who we will become. In the episode you'll hear: • That we all have goals and choices in reaching those goals. • How a dog learning will reinforce our training choices. • Why to consider what you trade off in dog training, your time or relationship. • That you need to give yourself grace when learning. • How our dog training choices carry over into other areas of our life. • What we get when you achieve a goal is not nearly as important as who we become. • That our relationship with our dogs is defined when we are frustrated. • How ethical training can be effective, but that it’s you who defines what is ethical. • About my history in dog training and how I’ve changed. • Why dog sports should be a team experience with our dog. • That dog training can be different and help us become who we want to be. Superstitious Behavior In Dog Training: Beware The Killer Bees! #149
Visit us at shapedbydog.com Do you have superstitious behavior like wearing a lucky shirt or lucky socks? Dogs can have superstitious behaviors too, and often, we contribute! We don’t want inadvertent or cheap behaviors to become part of what our dogs learn, so I’m covering what to look for and what you can do to avoid reinforcing superstition unintentionally. We’re also looking at why you need to beware of the killer bees in dog training! In the episode you'll hear: • How B. F. Skinner described superstitious behavior back in the 1940’s when working with pigeons. • That my mentor Bob Bailey used the term cheap behavior and what that looks like for dogs. • How my husband, John, had a superstitious behaviour at traffic lights. • The ways dogs can develop superstitious behaviors in daily life and dog sports. • How cheap behaviors like vocalizing, pawing, spinning, foot paddling, nipping, and the killer bees like biting, bopping, bouncing, boxing and more can be built into our training or routines. • About preventing cheap behavior or superstition in your dog training and why to look at reinforcement. • That reinforcement can be more complex than what you think you are rewarding. • How some behaviors can be because the dog is overwhelmed or over faced in training and why to look at your dog’s success percentage. • Why to work out your dog’s rate of reinforcement and how that can vary depending on what you are training. • About the importance of a training plan that will set you and your dog up for success. • How to help your dog with something like barking in the crate if that is superstitious. Your Dog Listening At A Distance Part 2: Critical Timing Of Distractions #148
Visit us at shapedbydog.com There are two ways to work on your dog listening around distractions, but many people only learn one. The first way is to get your dog into a controlled position like a sit or down, and introduce distractions. We take it to the next level and do things differently! Let’s face it; there are not too many bunnies who are doing to ask us to get our dogs into a sit before they run across the path. We need our dogs to listen no matter what and no matter how far away they are from us, and the timing of our distractions in training is critical to set our dogs up for success. In the episode you'll hear: • About the two reasons a dog would listen at a distance. • The way we grow massive confidence in our dog’s ability to listen. • About looking at what you do if your dog makes a mistake. • How games grow responses and enthusiasm for dogs. • What playing video games has to do with dog training. • The importance of controlling the distraction and not the dog. • About growing a dog’s skills in layers and the fun way to practice. • How to really use distractions in your dog training. • Why you always want to be on Team Distraction to get to Team Distance. • What to play with your dog this week in prep for next-level listening games.
