First Dog Agility Competition: Creating Joy For This! By Maximizing Reinforcement #206

Visit us at shapedbydog.com    In episodes 203 and 204, I shared a two-part deep dive on the metabolic and performance struggles overcome by This!, my 2.5 year-old Border Collie. After a road to recovery with dotted with setbacks, I entered This! in the World Team Tryouts for dog agility. In this episode, I’m sharing my plan, my goal, how I achieved it, and how it could impact your dog training, even if you don’t do dog sports.   In the episode you'll hear:   • My strategy to maximize joy for dog sport competitions, matches, and training classes. • Why I consciously chose a lighthearted attitude and commissioned a custom leash that sparks joy. • My planning so that This!'s first agility competition could be a success for her. • A review of our agility and jumpers runs at the big event. • My 5-step strategy for injecting joy into any activity or experience with your dog. • Step 1: Create a goal of maximizing joy. • Step 2: Know the rules around how you're able to reinforce the dog during the event or activity. • How we used a 'chase-tug-restrain' game for joy for This! at the event. • Step 3: Create a strategic plan around where and when you'll provide high value reinforcement. • Step 4: Rehearse the plan. • Step 5: Execute the plan with joy, have fun and celebrate! • How to use FEO / NFC opportunities to create joy for dogs. • How the energy of the crowd supporting me and This! moved me deeply. • Why allowing yourself grace is vital because everyone, including me, was a beginner once. • That joy results from clarity and how that boosts your dog's confidence.   Resources:   1. The Hidden World Of Reinforcement For Dogs And Why You Need To Know

Visit us at shapedbydog.com    To become great at reinforcement-based dog training, you have to get great at the use of reinforcement. I’m covering the hidden world of reinforcers for dogs and why to know the what, when, where and who of reinforcement. It goes well beyond the use of training treats and toy rewards. Awareness of everything reinforcing gives exponential ways to multiply the value of reinforcement in your dog training and to understand your dog's behavior.   In the episode you'll hear:   • How to identify your dog’s hidden reinforcers and leverage them to your advantage. • The clear definition of what reinforcement truly is. • Examples of what a dog finds reinforcing and the influence of when, where and with whom it’s experienced. • How different conditions can multiply or nullify the value of a reinforcer. • When water makes a great reinforcer and a tip to increase its value when appropriate. • That you don’t need super high value reinforcement every time you train. • How interaction and your body language reinforces your dog. • What you need to know about negative reinforcement for unwanted behaviors. • Why the things that lead to dogs chasing are reinforcing. • Types of destructive and productive activities dogs find rewarding. • That where you train, and the conditions greatly impact your training success. • Why every distraction outside of fear is reinforcing to your dog. • Why movement, like a flirt pole, is sometimes better than food rewards around distractions. • What to use to your advantage to create more value for reinforcements when training.   Resources:   1. Dog Behavior And Diet: Recovery For This! Beyond Dog Training Part 2 #204

Visit us at shapedbydog.com     In episode 203, I told the story of the behavior struggles I’ve had with my two-and-a-half-year-old Border Collie This! and the timeline of our challenges that were beyond dog training. And this episode is part two, covering how we began making changes to her diet, the practitioners who helped me help This!, and what I am doing now to ensure that This! has a life of joy. I also want to add a disclaimer that I am not a Veterinarian or Nutritionist. I just want to let you know the journey This! and I have been on together.   In the episode you'll hear:   • How I narrowed This!'s lack of drive and joy for work down to nutrition. • That you can't dog train a problem that isn't a dog training problem. • How an Austrian naturopath helped me help This!. • Why my naturopath requested photographs of my dogs' gums and what they revealed. • Why I believe a raw food diet is the best option for my dogs. • The help I received from Dr. Laurie Coger, an integrative and functional medicine veterinarian. • The role ancestral geographic origins have in nutrition. • About our IC Peeps roundtable with Unlocking the Canine Ancestral Diet author Steve Brown. • About Dr. Peter Dobias and the results of the heavy metal analysis of This!'s fur sample. • My process for balancing This!'s diet and what I observed. • How an herbalist used acupressure points to balance This!'s endocrine system. • What I'm doing now in dog training to help This! have joy. • How weekly Flyball classes are helping. • What This! is eating now, and my hope for raw food manufacturers. • The reason I entered This! into World Team Tryouts. • Why I believe This!'s comeback will be bigger than her setbacks.   Resources:   1. Reactive, Unmotivated and Fearful: Finding Resiliency For This! Beyond Dog Training Part 1 #203

Visit us at shapedbydog.com    Over the past couple of years, I’ve documented many challenges my dog This! and I have overcome, like reactivity, fear, resource guarding, and car sickness, to name a few behavior issues. And then, at an agility seminar here at my facility, This! fell apart. Now it’s time to put everything together. I have a two-part series outlining a timeline of This!’s struggles and what I’ve discovered to help her and any other dogs.   In the episode you'll hear:   • How This! falling apart at an agility seminar was a symptom of a larger problem. • Why you can’t dog train something that isn’t a dog training problem. • The origins of This!’s name and that there are no coincidences. • What I began noticing about This!’s body mechanics early in puppyhood. • That This! only showed true drive for activities of adrenaline like chasing. • About the reactivity, resource guarding, car sickness, stunted growth, and joylessness experienced by This!. • How anything involving thinking for This! led to her decompressing for hours. • Why my only focus for This! became her joy. • How a naturopath came into my life to help me help This!. • About This!’s growth stall relative to her littermates. • What agility jump grids help us notice in our agility dogs. • This!’s immediate performance improvement after nutritional changes.   Resources:   1. Getting A Happy Well Behaved Dog With The ABCs Of Training #202

Visit us at shapedbydog.com    “Susan, how do I get what you get with your dogs?” is frequently asked, and the answer is the topic of this episode. We’re looking at 8 zones in your dog’s life, how you can use those zones to your advantage, and what the habits of success look like to get a well behaved dog. The scientific term for setting environments and situations up for your dog’s success is ‘antecedent arrangements’, and understanding how it works will bring you and your dog a life of joy together.   In the episode you'll hear:   • How to get with your dog what I have with my dogs. • That success and failure leave clues for dog training. • The power of antecedent arrangements for creating success for you and your dog. • About eight zones of your dog’s life to use to your advantage. • How the stories we tell ourselves aren’t always true and undermine our potential. • Why I believe wholeheartedly that you and your dog can be brilliant. • The Antecedent-Behavior-Consequence (ABC) cycle that reinforces behavior. • How I helped my dog This! with her fears and reactivity. • Examples of unpredictable situations with dogs and how to manage them. • The deciding factors for having a well-trained dog.   Resources:   1. Can Dog Training Be Effective, Efficient AND Compassionate? #201

Visit us at shapedbydog.com    We get a lot of great comments on our videos, and sometimes I come across one that inspires a podcast episode like this one. I’m answering a very thoughtful question that many people might have. Should you abandon one training philosophy for another when results appear elusive? And should you pick a dog training lane and stay in that lane? Professional dog trainers often forget what it’s like to be starting out. That can lead to learning overwhelm and students feeling less confident about the education they’re getting and giving their dogs, so it’s important for everyone to know the direction they are heading.   In the episode you'll hear:   • A listener question about abandoning a dog training method when results could be around the corner. • Why compassionate, efficient, and effective dog training is the trifecta of my methodology. • The difference between finding behaviors to praise vs. behaviors to punish. • False assumptions that some balanced dog trainers make about positive reinforcement. • That with enough time, any dog training method will work, but there are other considerations. • Questions to ask yourself when your dog doesn’t behave as you expected. • How my mentor Bob Bailey defines the difference between a good trainer and a great trainer. • What “behavior is a function of consequence” means with dog training as an example. • Why I believe the use of aversives to change behavior in dog training are antiquated. • The two factors of mechanics and the other 23 hours of the day in dog training progress.   Resources:   1. I'm sharing a 10-step protocol that will turn the dog training world on its head because it's like nothing that is out there for separation anxiety help. It's the FRIDA Protocol created by two of my European students, who are amazing dog trainers, Nadine Hehli and Simone Fasel, to help their rescue dog Frida with her extreme separation anxiety. The protocol is now helping many more dogs, and I'm bringing you the steps to overcoming canine separation anxiety for our special 200th episode of Shaped by Dog.   In the episode you'll hear:   • A case study of Nadine and Simone's rescue dog, Frida, who overcame severe separation anxiety. • Why typical approaches to separation anxiety don't work for extreme cases. • The 10 steps of the FRIDA Protocol to help dogs with separation anxiety. • What equipment you'll need to get started, including a snuffle mat and remote feeder. • The foundations for success with the FRIDA Protocol. • Why functional relaxation to create calm for dogs is a critical component. • Reminders about the body language of calm dogs vs. anxious dogs. • When and how to introduce remote feeders and WiFi cameras to work through separation anxiety. • How to begin fading in barriers that allow the dog freedom of movement in their "Fortress of Calm". • When to introduce "Hidden Treasures" for your dog. • Why remote feeders aren't babysitters. • When and how to leave your dog home alone for the first time. • How to create calm relaxation for your dog in other places like the car.   Separation Anxiety Online Program: Register your interest in having Nadine and Simone’s Online Program for Separation Anxiety in English - https://dogsthat.com/separation-anxiety/   Dog Gear Mentioned for the FRIDA Protocol: *West Paw Toppl Treat Toys - https://geni.us/toppl *Snuffle Mat - https://geni.us/snuffle_mat *Bowser Donut Dog Bed - https://geni.us/bowser-bed *Ex-Pen - https://geni.us/ex-pen-white *PetGeek Remote Feeder - https://geni.us/petgeek-dispenser *Treat & Train Remote Feeder - https://geni.us/treat-train *Ring Stick Up Cam - https://geni.us/ring-stick-up-cam Kong Toys - https://www.kongcompany.com/   Resources:   1. What Does "Positive Is Not Permissive" Really Mean In Dog Training? #198

Visit us at shapedbydog.com   The way we train with positive reinforcement might seem a little out there as we put our dog’s emotions first, and if our dog does not do what we want them to do, we don’t punish or correct. It might even make you wonder what sort of anarchy we have in our lives with our dogs! But it’s not like that at all because one of the guiding principles I’ve been talking about since the 90s is that positive is not permissive.   In the episode you'll hear:   • What “positive not permissive” really means. • Why the relationship we have with our dog weaves into everything. • How expectations and consistency create clarity for dogs. • The reasons a dog might not be meeting your expectations. • That dog training can be part of everything you do. • What a day might look like in your life with your dog. • The hierarchy of behaviors to consider. • Why recall, retrieve and relax are my top priorities. • Games you can play with your dog for life skills. • The reason loose leash walking begins at home. • Tips to fit dog training into everyday life with daily quickies.   Shaped by Dog Episode 200 Online Celebration Event: Register to get the news to join us for an online party for Episode 200! - https://dogsthat.com/sbd-celebrate-episode-200/ Learn to Play ItsYerChoice: https://recallers.com/iycsummit-join   Resources:   1. Outsmarting Distractions: How To Use Environmental Reinforcement in Dog Training #197

Visit us at shapedbydog.com    The expression about Vegas casinos that “the house always wins” is like the one about dog training: The environment always wins. But it doesn’t have to be true when you learn to use the  environment to your advantage. Mastering reinforcement means understanding what your dog values most, and there are many things dogs value. Once you know where the reinforcement is for your dog, you can build yourself into that reinforcement so that it is you, not the environment, winning your dog’s focus.   In the episode you'll hear:   • The role environments play in your dog’s reinforcers. • How “jackpot” dopamine creates value for dogs. • How a negative prediction error encourages dogs to repeat and escalate behavior. • Where counter surfing really starts (and it’s not at the counter). • Why you need to be aware of the thing before the thing. • How to neutralize distracting environments to win your dog’s focus. • Why training puppies and dogs in the bathroom is ideal in the beginning. • How to grow the environment in your dog training. • What to do when you know your dog will ignore you, with the example of playing with other dogs. • Why and when to give your dog surprise high value rewards. • Tips for building yourself into all the reinforcement your dog receives.   Shaped by Dog Episode 200 Online Celebration Event Register to get the news to join us for an online party for Episode 200! https://dogsthat.com/sbd-celebrate-episode-200/   Resources:   1.
