115: What Does The Rash Around My Mouth Mean?

Have you ever wondered about an annoying rash around your lips (or even on your lips) that can make it painful to move your mouth? It certainly can be unsightly and really beat down your confidence. But it can also be painful to do mundane things like smile or laugh. In today’s podcast, I want to explore if this rash around your mouth is really just eczema or something else. And why it’s important to dig deeper into it. Not just from a nutrient perspective, but also due to the likelihood of infections present that could be a hidden trigger. I hope this helps you find relief if you’ve been struggling with rashes and symptoms around your mouth! In this episode: What is Angular Cheilitis (AC)? Symptoms of angular cheilitis The connection between AC + infections Angular cheilitis + specific nutrients you could be deficient in What makes you more at risk for developing this type of rash? How Vitamin A is connected to AC Quotes: Angular Cheilitis can be caused by a number of issues -- exposure to certain medications, specific health conditions, and deficiencies of certain nutrients like B vitamins, iron and zinc. Common nutrient issues associated with rashes around the mouth include low B vitamin intake, low zinc, low iron, low protein or even excessive vitamin A intake.Ready to figure out your skin’s root causes so you can finally fix your skin + break free from meds + flare ups?My virtual clinic works with adults worldwide struggling with eczema, psoriasis, rosacea, urticaria, hives, dandruff, perioral dermatitis + more.Trusted by 1000+ clients, we get results WITHOUT restrictive elimination diets.Schedule an assessment call at skinrepaircall.com

114: Why Preservatives In Skincare Can Be A Good Thing w/ Rachael Pontillo

With the popularity of natural skincare booming, certain ingredients (like preservatives) have become somewhat taboo. However, as my guest will point out, sometimes natural skincare products do need preservatives.  My guest today is Rachael Pontillo, a holistic skincare innovator, author, and educator. Rachael is the bestselling author of the book Love Your Skin, Love Yourself, and co-author of The Sauce Code. She’s a functional nutrition practitioner, AADP and IAHC Board Certified International Health Coach, licensed aesthetician, and natural skincare formulator and educator. She’s an avid herbalist, skincare ingredient aficionado, and lifelong learner. Rachael is also my good friend, and my go-to person to ask about the ingredients in skincare products. Join us as we discuss why preservatives in skincare can be a good thing, and the possible implications if natural skincare products omit preservatives. Do your skincare products contain preservatives? Let me know in the comments! In this episode: Info about preservatives in skincare Why some natural skincare products may require preservatives How do you know if there is a preservative in your skincare product? Is there a way for the consumer to know if a company has done adequate testing on their product? Quotes “When a product doesn't have a preservative, some of the signs that tell you that contamination has happened, one of them is separation. And definitely black specs indicates some sort of microbial infestation that has happened, which obviously is a big problem.” [3:55] “Anytime you have water, that is an environment that can breed bacteria, mold and yeast. Any of that can cause problems. That contamination can lead to infection, irritation, all sorts of problems. So we do need a preservative.” [5:19] Links Find Rachael online Create Your Skincare Nutritional Aesthetics Interested in trying Rachael's online classes to create your own skincare? 113: Why The pH of Your Skin Is So Important To The Microbiome Living There

Did you know that the pH of your skin is directly tied to the organisms that are able to live on your skin? As you already know, a healthy skin microbiome is crucial to avoiding things like a leaky skin barrier and unwanted bugs (like Staph Aureus) from taking over. What helps determine the makeup of the skin microbiome is directly tied to the pH of the skin. If the environment becomes too acidic or even too alkaline, problems can ensue. In this episode, I'm going to share with you some really cool details about your skin's microbiome AND how the pH of your skin can spell trouble if it shifts away from the optimal range. In this episode: Type of organisms living within a healthy skin microbiome Different zones of the body alter the microbial makeup Why the pH of your skin so important Ways your skin's pH can be altered Can disruption of your skin's pH change its microbiome makeup? pH of different cleansers and natural oils Quotes: Your skin's pH needs to be between 4.5 to 5 making it more of an acidic environment. It should NOT be alkaline (no matter how popular alkalizing the body seems to be online). Maintaining a healthy pH balance is so integral for this skin is because it has a direct connection between what organisms are able to grow and thrive on your skin.Ready to figure out your skin’s root causes so you can finally fix your skin + break free from meds + flare ups?My virtual clinic works with adults worldwide struggling with eczema, psoriasis, rosacea, urticaria, hives, dandruff, perioral dermatitis + more.Trusted by 1000+ clients, we get results WITHOUT restrictive elimination diets.Schedule an assessment call at skinrepaircall.com

Quotes “Sun-related spots, freckles, age spots, sun spots, liver spots: Technically they're many, many names for the same thing.” [3:55] “Sun spots are caused by ultraviolet radiation, by ultraviolet exposure to your skin. 111: What is Geographic Tongue? (Is It a Sign of Psoriasis?)

Have you ever heard of Geographic Tongue? It certainly sounds strange, but bear with me because it's actually got some interesting connections to psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis. Some believe that Geographic Tongue (GT) is a sign of psoriasis in the mouth. In today's episode, I wanted to share with you what GT is, what it means if you have psoriasis, and why it's important NOT to ignore it! Part of the reason I say you shouldn't ignore it is that I believe your body communicates with you through signs and symptoms. If you've got an issue like this, your body is trying to say something. Here's why I think Geographic Tongue is an important clue and how to find out if you have it! In this episode: What is Geographic Tongue + its connection to Psoriasis Does everyone with psoriasis get GT? Triggers, medication + conditions associated with GT Can GT be a sign of nutrient deficiencies? Why it would be good to get an oral exam if you’ve got psoriasis Quotes: Some sites call Geographic Tongue “psoriasis of the tongue”, but that might not be the case! Not everyone with psoriasis has GT though there is a high association between the two. The potential for GT to be a sign of nutrient deficiencies underscores why this isn’t something to just blow off.Ready to figure out your skin’s root causes so you can finally fix your skin + break free from meds + flare ups?My virtual clinic works with adults worldwide struggling with eczema, psoriasis, rosacea, urticaria, hives, dandruff, perioral dermatitis + more.Trusted by 1000+ clients, we get results WITHOUT restrictive elimination diets.Schedule an assessment call at skinrepaircall.com

110: Missing Links Between Your Little One's Skin Rashes & Mom's Health w/ Jennifer Brand, MS, CNS

Seeing a baby struggle with chronic skin rashes is heartbreaking. Today's guest is here to talk about how mom's health has the potential to impact her baby's skin health.   My guest today, Jennifer Brand, is an integrative and clinical nutritionist with a Master's degree in public health, a Master's degree in nutrition, and she’s a Certified Nutrition Specialist. She specializes in childhood skin rashes (eczema, psoriasis, tinea versicolor, hives, acne, vitiligo, and others), food allergies and sensitivities, and gut problems. Jennifer’s own struggle with gut problems, and her father’s battle with psoriasis turned psoriatic arthritis left her frustrated with conventional medicine. She knows first hand that a different approach is needed: An approach that doesn’t remove more foods from the diet. Your body runs off of nutrients from foods you eat. When they are missing, imbalances develop and symptoms and health problems follow. An approach that doesn’t include stronger prescription steroid creams. No one has skin rashes because of a steroid cream deficiency! Jennifer is a relentless detective putting her strong knowledge of nutritional biochemistry to work for you, to identify what’s driving symptoms and health problems in order to address the root cause of them. Jennifer’s work has been featured in peer-reviewed scientific journals and Voyagela, as well as on podcasts, online summits, and in-person presentations at venues such as Casa Colina Hospital in Pomona California. Join us as we discuss the link between a baby's skin rashes and the health of their mother. Have you ever wondered if your health could have impacted your little one's skin rashes? Let me know in the comments! In this episode: No guilt or finger-pointing What's the deal with an infant's microbiome compared to an adult, especially in terms of skin rash issues? Effective testing for little ones Can breast milk pass things that could affect a baby's skin? Quotes “A gut microbiome is not mature until a child is about two to three years old.” [4:00] “I started finding some research that certain gut bugs can be passed through breast milk. H. pylori is one of them.” [10:50] Links Find Jennifer Brand online Get Jennifer Brand's FREE GReady to figure out your skin’s root causes so you can finally fix your skin + break free from meds + flare ups?My virtual clinic works with adults worldwide struggling with eczema, psoriasis, rosacea, urticaria, hives, dandruff, perioral dermatitis + more.Trusted by 1000+ clients, we get results WITHOUT restrictive elimination diets.Schedule an assessment call at skinrepaircall.com

109: Eczema Triggered By Hidden Infections [CASE REPORT]

Ever feel like you've done everything and STILL aren't getting answers about your eczema (or other skin rashes)? You're not alone. Even I felt like my dermatologist should have better answers than just use another steroid cream and "this is probably genetic". I really felt like the answers that I got weren't real answers. At a certain point, I realized that I'd rather someone level with me and say "I don't know what's causing your eczema" rather than just blaming things that felt out of my control. And that's how one of my clients felt as he neared the point of feeling very hopeless. He's tried both conventional and holistic solutions without getting pretty much anywhere. Fortunately, we crossed paths and were able to uncover a major root cause that has gotten him some great results! All it took was asking the right questions so that we knew where to dig! In this episode: Chad's challenging eczema story Why a really in-depth case history was crucial to finding answers How we chose testing that help get to Chad's root causes Why an elimination diet didn't help at all even though prior testing said he had many sensitivities What Chad's eczema is like now after working on his root cause Quotes: "One crucial step in my process is doing an incredibly thorough case history. I often ask questions that no one has ever asked before. All to tell me where we need to dig!" "If you've ever visited a third world country, it can be a red flag... even if you didn't get sick. It's possible that you picked something up that didn't make you sick enough to even consider it a trigger for your rashes."Ready to figure out your skin’s root causes so you can finally fix your skin + break free from meds + flare ups?My virtual clinic works with adults worldwide struggling with eczema, psoriasis, rosacea, urticaria, hives, dandruff, perioral dermatitis + more.Trusted by 1000+ clients, we get results WITHOUT restrictive elimination diets.Schedule an assessment call at skinrepaircall.com

107: Symptoms Of A Staph Infection On Your Skin

Have you ever wondered what the symptoms of a staph infection on your skin are? I have come to discover that a lot of people really don't know what the symptoms are which can lead to delay in seeking help from your doctor. Recently, I asked my Instagram community if they knew what to look for if you're having a flare and it might be staph. I was surprised to discover that 98% wanted me to talk more about staph infections and weren't clear on what the symptoms are. And I've found this issue with clients who desperately manage a flare. But because they don't know the symptoms of a staph infection on the skin, they don't even consider it as an option. Failure to identify a staph infection can lead to a potentially unnecessary period of suffering. That's why I decided to share what you should look out for. Because I'm not a doctor, this is certainly not intended to help you diagnose a staph infection. It's my hope that it will help you know when to see your doctor rather than trying to just deal with it on your own. In this episode: Client story about staph infection Is it worth it to blend alternative and conventional approaches? 98% of my audience didn't know the symptoms of a skin staph infection Signs of a Staph infection you need to be aware of Are Staph infections only a concern for people with Eczema? Quotes: Staph infections can happen to anyone and that means that they are not an eczema-specific problem! I've worked with psoriasis clients who are struggling with staph as well. Burning skin and a deep, awful itch are two key symptoms during a flare that could spell the difference between a rash flare and a staph infection.Ready to figure out your skin’s root causes so you can finally fix your skin + break free from meds + flare ups?My virtual clinic works with adults worldwide struggling with eczema, psoriasis, rosacea, urticaria, hives, dandruff, perioral dermatitis + more.Trusted by 1000+ clients, we get results WITHOUT restrictive elimination diets.Schedule an assessment call at skinrepaircall.com
