165: Before You Say No To Antibiotics, Consider This
It’s pretty common to be afraid that antibiotics will wreck your gut microbiome. That fear is pervasive thanks to the many health marketers who’ve convinced people (including myself at one point) that antibiotics were something to avoid at all costs. Unfortunately I’ve found that this approach leads my clients (and those in this community) to feel confused and to avoid treatment when it might actually be the best thing. I find myself sharing this exact information with clients every single week, so I thought I’d share this with you too to help you make better decisions for your skin and health. So before you pass on antibiotics prescribed by your doctor because of what you’ve heard or read, here’s what you should consider first! In this episode: Understanding the fear driving antibiotic use Will antibiotics totally wreck your gut? How to make a decision about whether (or not) to use antibiotics Six questions to ask yourself before taking antibiotics Situations when antibiotics might be the better option How to take probiotics during a round of antibiotics so that they’re effective Quotes: Long-term exposure can reduce gut bug diversity and increase the likelihood of opportunistic overgrowth (like Candida). We’ve been heavily marketed to through many wellness influencers that antibiotics completely wreck your gut and should be avoided at all costs.Ready to figure out your skin’s root causes so you can finally fix your skin + break free from meds to manage your skin?My virtual clinic works with adults worldwide struggling with eczema, psoriasis, rosacea, urticaria, hives, dandruff, perioral dermatitis + more.Trusted by over 1000 clients, we get results WITHOUT restrictive elimination diets.Schedule an assessment call at https://skinrepaircall.com/

163: Iron Deficiency Skin Rash
Have you ever heard of an Iron Deficiency Skin Rash? It’s a thing! So is itchiness triggered by low iron levels. I was so fascinated by this topic that I wanted to dive deeper and help you understand just HOW important it is to get assessed for iron deficiency. Unfortunately, it’s one of the most common deficiencies that I uncover in my practice. If you’ve struggled in the past with iron (or have iron deficiency symptoms like hair loss), this episode is a MUST for you! Assessment is way more complicated than just looking at labs. I’m going through my process that I take every client through so that you get a better sense of what it’s like to have a comprehensive evaluation. Numbers on a paper only tell part of the story especially if you’re not feeling well and struggling with itchiness! In this episode: Iron deficiency + itchiness Type of rash that can appear due to iron anemia How low iron impacts your thyroid (+ ultimately your skin) Which diets make you more susceptible to low iron Best labs to check for iron status What I assess if I suspect iron deficiency Foods + supplements to help iron levels Quotes: Clients often take for granted that their body will just make the nutrients it needs like iron. And that mindset unfortunately can get them into trouble. Iron deficiency must be taken seriously and assessed from several different angles especially if symptoms are present.Ready to figure out your skin’s root causes so you can finally fix your skin + break free from meds to manage your skin?My virtual clinic works with adults worldwide struggling with eczema, psoriasis, rosacea, urticaria, hives, dandruff, perioral dermatitis + more.Trusted by over 1000 clients, we get results WITHOUT restrictive elimination diets.Schedule an assessment call at https://skinrepaircall.com/

161: Low Oxalate Diet: Can It Stop Your Rashes?
If you’re working through what foods seem to trigger or flare your rashes, you might at some point consider trying a low oxalate diet. Though it’s commonly used to reduce the production of kidney stones in those prone to making them, I’ve received many questions about this particular elimination diet for rashes. Aside from my general caution about eliminating more and more foods, improvement on a low oxalate diet (or because you have high oxalates in your urine) is an important clue! I’m sharing in this episode some clinical pearls about a low oxalate diet that might really surprise you. AND the circumstance when I think it would be worth a try to eliminate them (and when it’s not). In this episode: What is a low oxalate diet + its connection with rashes Foods that are high in oxalates What high oxalates indicate about your gut Probiotics that breakdown oxalates Is it worth it to try a low oxalate diet? Quotes: More current research shows that those struggling with calcium oxalate kidney stone formation “exhibit dysbiosis in their fecal and urinary microbiota compared with controls”. Gut bugs like Oxalobacter formigenes, L. plantarum, L. casei, L. acidophilus, L. rhamnosus, L. salviarius, Bifidobacterium infantis, and Bifidobacterium animalis can all break down oxalates.Ready to figure out your skin’s root causes so you can finally fix your skin + break free from meds to manage your skin?My virtual clinic works with adults worldwide struggling with eczema, psoriasis, rosacea, urticaria, hives, dandruff, perioral dermatitis + more.Trusted by over 1000 clients, we get results WITHOUT restrictive elimination diets.Schedule an assessment call at https://skinrepaircall.com/
