265: Problem with Antihistamines That No One Tells You w/ Dr. Chris Thompson, MD
Itchy eyes. Sinus pressure. Coughing and sneezing... Many people take antihistamines to get through an allergy episode, and that can be totally OK. But what about if you have to take them everyday? Are there potential long term side effects? Today's guest, Dr. Chris Thompson, is a Board Certified Otolaryngologist, Head & Neck Surgeon with over 25 years of experience practicing medicine in Texas. He earned his undergraduate degree in Biomedical Engineering from Texas A & M University in College Station and went on to receive his Doctorate of Medicine at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas. Dr. Thompson completed his residency with the Department of Otolaryngology, Head & Neck Surgery at the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston.Dr. Thompson focuses solely on allergy, sinus and nasal treatment and is considered an expert in all three fields. He is one of a handful of doctors that played an integral role in the development of the cutting-edge sinus procedure, Balloon Sinuplasty. Dr. Thompson is also experienced with nasal reconstructive procedures and rhinoplasty. He is very excited for the future of allergy treatment through sublingual immunotherapy, as more patients choose and stay consistent with the treatment. He is also a member of the American Academy of Otolaryngology-Head & Neck Surgery, American Academy of Facial Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery, Texas Medical Association, and Travis County Medical Society. Join us as Dr. Thompson discusses all things relating to allergies, the side effects of long-term use of antihistamines, and other options that people can use or try to get off of those meds such as immunotherapy. Have you used antihistamines to calm down a severe allergic response? Have they helped, but you're ready to try something new? Let me know in the comments if you have questions! In this episode: Are antihistamines appropriate for daily use? Different types of antihistamines (what do they do?) How eczema, food allergies + asthma are related Antihistamines crossing the blood-brain barrier (YIKES) Non-pharmaceutical options to consider (and discuss with your doctor) Treatment options for different types of specific allergies Quotes “There are some studies that link long-term antihistamine use with things like dementia. There was one I read recently that showed an increase in glial tumors, which are typically brain tumors... There are links to depression. There are links to weight gain with these and all, but one of the antihistamines over-the-counter can cross the blood-brain barrier." [4:16] “One of the most surprising facts about allergy is that only 2% of the population of allergy patients seek allergy care. Imagine, if 3% of cancer patients or 2% of sleep apnea patients sought and received proper care for their medical ailment? It would just be unfathomable, but yet in the allergy world, again, we're not talking about a life threatening problem in most cases, but it really does get sidelined and poo-pooed by a lot of doctors." 264: How to Balance Your Skin's Microbiome with Endolysins (MIND BLOWING!)
Have you ever heard of endolysins? Are you wondering what these things are and how are they relevant when talking about skin conditions? Today’s episode is sponsored by Gladskin which makes a topical cream that I think you should know about called Eczema Cream with Micreobalance®… and it’s highly relevant to what we’re talking about today. I became aware of Gladskin several years ago when community members started to share their personal stories of how Gladskin’s Eczema Cream had helped their eczema flares + symptoms.Because I didn’t fully understand how exactly the product worked, I read up on the Micreobalance® endolysin technology and talked to people at Gladskin so that I better understood why it could be helpful while being free of antibiotics and steroids. I was really impressed with how neat endolysins are – sort of like pac-mans (for those of you who are old enough to remember that video game) that target the bad and preserve the good, to keep your skin microbiome in check. You can check out more about Gladskin Eczema Cream with Micreobalance® AND save 15% off your order at www.gladskin.com/healthyskinshow. My guest today is Dr. Peter Lio, a Clinical Assistant Professor of Dermatology & Pediatrics at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine. He received his medical degree from Harvard Medical School, completed his internship in Pediatrics at Boston Children’s Hospital, and his Dermatology training at Harvard where he served as Chief Resident in Dermatology. While at Harvard, he received formal training in acupuncture. Dr. Lio will be giving you the low down on endolysins – I know you’re going to find this just as fascinating as I do, so let’s dive in! Have you ever tried Gladskin, and has it helped on your skin journey? Post something you learned it in the comments! In this episode: The difference between the skin microbiome of eczema vs healthy skin Thoughts on antibiotic resistance as a growing medical concern Endolysins: what are they + how they support the skin microbiome How Gladskin's Micreobalance® utilizes endolysins to help the skin's microbiome Real-life stories from Dr. Lio's practice of patients using Gladskin Tips + strategies to help you use Gladskin with Micreobalance® Quotes “There is some very convincing evidence that it may help with not only the bacterial balance on the skin, but also with atopic dermatitis. So we can actually see some of the studies are studied in patients with eczema or atopic dermatitis. I think there is pretty convincing evidence of clinical helpfulness of these [endolysin] products.” [10:47] “... the baby's branded one. Actually, they remove the oat because there is some discussion around putting foods on our skin and the connection between allergy. Some people really do have an oat allergy. In this episode: Signs + symptoms of lupus Tanya's personal story from "fuzzy" diagnosis to being flare-free The eyebrow-raising stat of how many people really have lupus Why getting a proper lupus diagnosis is so challenging How diet + external factors play a huge role in flares and calming the inflammation Quotes “When I was having my lupus flares, I had no idea if I was going to wake up. Honestly, to just get out of my bed was excruciating. He's my husband now, he's a good one, I kept him, but he helped me get dressed. He helped me get my breakfast and turn the doorknobs to get out of the apartment. It was really tough." [30:14] “Lupus can lead to headaches, low-grade fevers, photosensitivity. So if you notice, "Oh wow, I spent the day in the sun. And for days after, weeks after, I really don't feel well," that could be a sign of lupus." 262: Why Your Child's Risk of Allergies, Eczema + Asthma Is So High w/ Meenal Lele
If you've had children, you may have been given tips (probably unsolicited) about feeding Baby, but what does the science really say about baby advice? From allergies to getting your child started on the best foot forward, most parents are left trying to decipher an ever-changing landscape while feeling defeated. Today's guest, Meenal Lele, is the author of The Baby and the Biome, a revelatory look at how we all got so sick. She is also the founder & CEO of Lil Mixins, an early allergen introduction solution. She has a chemical engineering and business degree from the University of Pennsylvania. Meenal's book combines her deep clinical experience with her goal to end food allergies that affect 40 million Americans, like her son. Join us as Meenal helps to break down the complicated topic of children's food allergies and what science really says when it comes to a child's microbiome. Does your child have early eczema or food allergies? Post something you learned in your journey in the comments to help other parents! In this episode: The scary stat of how many kids will develop a chronic immune disease How eczema, food allergies and asthma are all related What is the best time window to introduce common allergenic foods to a baby (this goes against common advice) Why staph and eczema can go hand in hand along with food allergies What should parents do to hopefully minimize these issues? Quotes “Foods become an allergen when your body mistakes a totally normal, safe food and decides it's a parasite.” [12:52] “I feel like we're so unwilling to be even momentarily uncomfortable that we end up throwing things at a problem that don't even help. And that's the case for us with antibiotics. In Sweden, they made doctors report every single time they were using antibiotics, and why, and it cut the reuse of antibiotics by 75%, meaning probably for us in the United States, three out of four uses of antibiotics are completely unnecessary." 261: Chronic Hives: Why They Aren't Going Away
If chronic hives, dermatographia or angioadema have got you down – I hear ya. They are extremely frustrating skin conditions especially when all the testing to look for an environmental trigger doesn’t yield much helpful information. If you’re anything like my clients, you probably don’t want to be stuck on endless combos of antihistamines and feeling helpless to make this type of rash stop. My clinical experience supporting people with these conditions has shown me that there are a lot more underlying the frustrating skin symptoms than what you’ll hear from your doctor. I’m going to share with you how I view these conditions from a functional clinical nutrition perspective AND what first steps you can take that my clients find incredibly helpful! In this episode: The main reason the hives/urticaria will not stop Thyroid connection to chronic hives Research on hives + autoimmunity Is your body OVER-producing histamine?!?! First 4 steps to get urticaria to stop Quotes: Histamine Overload is a situation where your body is no longer able to handle the immense amount of histamine present. A 2019 paper noted that 25 to 30 percent of urticaria cases also had underlying Hashimoto’s along with anti-TPO antibodies.Ready to figure out your skin’s root causes so you can finally fix your skin + break free from meds to manage your skin?My virtual clinic works with adults worldwide struggling with eczema, psoriasis, rosacea, urticaria, hives, dandruff, perioral dermatitis + more.Trusted by over 1000 clients, we get results WITHOUT restrictive elimination diets.Schedule an assessment call at https://skinrepaircall.com/

260: Oral Microbiome-Skin Rash Connection w/ Dr. Mark Burhenne
Raise your hand if you've ever used mouthwash or bleached your teeth. Probably everyone has at some point, right? My guest today will make you rethink your idea of having a "dirty" mouth that needs to be sterilized! Today's guest, Dr. Mark Burhenne, attended the University of the Pacific Dugoni School of Dentistry in San Francisco. In his bio, Dr. B writes, “In my 30 years of practice as a dentist, I’ve seen a lot of misinformation and people who have fallen through the cracks due to our healthcare system’s failure to understand the oral-body connection” – which is where his focus on “whole body care” really started. Dr. B is passionate about getting people the right information they need to be healthy – a passion we share! He founded askthedentist.com in 2010 as an avenue to advance that passion. Ask the Dentist promotes oral health for total wellness and empowers people to understand how the mouth is a window into the health of the rest of the body. It's fast becoming one of the sources for the best dental advice on the net with millions of viewers per month. Dr. B is also is the author of the best selling book The 8-Hour Paradox: How We are Sleeping Our Way to Fatigue, Disease, and Unhappiness. He recently started a podcast, and is helping connect functional dentists to functionally minded patients via a worldwide directory. Join us as we chat on all things relating to functional dentistry- from sleep to the oral-systemic connection to the oral microbiome. (And yes, we will talk about some oral care products!) Have you noticed a skin rash pop up after having dental work or something go awry within your mouth? Tell me about it in the comments! In this episode: How oral health can impact + worsen skin problems What is the oral microbiome? Why you should NEVER disinfect the mouth How bleaching your teeth could lead to dysbiosis Should you DITCH toothpaste? (cankersores, anyone?) Hydroxyapatite - what is it + how is it helpful for your teeth Testing you can order to assess your oral microbiome Quotes “Anytime we talk about health, whether it's systemic health, oral health, we have to talk in that fashion as being a super organism and having this complex, interacting, synergistic system in our mouth. And when it goes wrong, it's not necessarily just the human DNA, it's a combination of everything.” [5:03] “There's a little girdle of tissue that tries to seal off the bugs in the mouth and prevent them from getting into the body. The bad news is that it happens quite frequently. For example, every time you go in for a dental cleaning, within 20 minutes, those bacteria in the mouth are in the blood in your bloodstream... And that's called Bacteriema." 259: Common Nutrient Deficiencies in Psoriasis {RESEARCH}
If you’ve got psoriasis – there’s a pretty big chance that you’re deficient in certain nutrients (especially if your psoriasis is more severe). In fact, nutrient deficiencies are more common than you probably think! As a clinical nutritionist, I often find that those with more severe symptoms tend to experience higher degrees of nutrient deficiencies (which is one reason that I do not understand the resistance to checking the nutrient status of those with psoriasis). So let’s discuss which key macro and micronutrients are commonly found to be deficient in psoriasis and what that could mean for your body and health! Especially because nutrient deficiencies are a source of intense stress because your body doesn’t have the proper nutrients to operate efficiently. In this episode: Common nutrient deficiencies found in cases of psoriasis Impacts of low protein intake on psoriasis cases (that I see in my practice) Why this one key macronutrient is so important Certain optimal ranges that I use in my clinical practice What selenium has to do with psoriasis The potential impact several of these nutrients have on modulating your immune response Quotes: There’s no way you can know that your nutrient stores and nutrient intake are appropriate for you without (in many instances) looking at labs. Keep in mind that combining several interventions together may make a bigger impact on your skin than a single intervention alone.Ready to figure out your skin’s root causes so you can finally fix your skin + break free from meds to manage your skin?My virtual clinic works with adults worldwide struggling with eczema, psoriasis, rosacea, urticaria, hives, dandruff, perioral dermatitis + more.Trusted by over 1000 clients, we get results WITHOUT restrictive elimination diets.Schedule an assessment call at https://skinrepaircall.com/

In this episode: What is Emotional Freedom Technique (also known as Tapping)? How does it work and why is it effective? Research backing up how well ETF works How can you use this tool to benefit you? Example of a basic tapping process/mantra to use Quotes “When you're tapping on these points in the body, it's actually sending a signal to your brain to let your brain and body know that you can relax. And there's even studies that show that tapping is going to reduce cortisol levels in the body.” [1:59] “It's all about fully accepting all parts of you. And a lot of times we're fighting against these parts of ourselves, we're frustrated with ourself. We don't want to look at or deal with these things that bother us. And so, rather than us ignoring them or avoiding them, we fully bring everything into the light and we just acknowledge what is true…and when we can accept something that's there that we don't love, it's actually through the acceptance that we're more easily able to release it.” [12:30] Links Connect with Sarah Emily online RESEARCH – Clinical EFT (Emotional Freedom Techniques) Improves Multiple Physiological Markers of Health Follow Sarah Emily on Instagram | Join her Facebook group Get a free tapping training HERE Check out this beginner intro to tapping course that teaches the basics of tapping if you want to learReady to figure out your skin’s root causes so you can finally fix your skin + break free from meds to manage your skin?My virtual clinic works with adults worldwide struggling with eczema, psoriasis, rosacea, urticaria, hives, dandruff, perioral dermatitis + more.Trusted by over 1000 clients, we get results WITHOUT restrictive elimination diets.Schedule an assessment call at https://skinrepaircall.com/

257: Itchiness + Histamine Intolerance - Why Am I Itchy?
Most people assume that itchiness means there’s too much histamine in their bodies. This assumption is often very wrong leading people to take anti-histamine medications that they will admit don’t help much. If this hits home, you’ll be shocked to know that there are many different reasons (or hidden root causes) that can drive itch that often isn’t explored in conventional dermatology. So if you’re frustrated that nothing seems to help that awful itch, you’re in the right place! In this episode: MYTH-BUSTING – itchiness + histamine intolerance Common meds + supplements used to stop itch What happens when these options don’t work? Different itch triggers (that have nothing to do with histamine) What about chronic hives + dermatographia? Quotes: If itchiness were solely triggered by histamine, then the medications and even potentially the supplements would help. Itchiness is associated with higher levels of IL-31 in the body (especially in those with eczema, urticaria, and prurigo nodularis).Ready to figure out your skin’s root causes so you can finally fix your skin + break free from meds to manage your skin?My virtual clinic works with adults worldwide struggling with eczema, psoriasis, rosacea, urticaria, hives, dandruff, perioral dermatitis + more.Trusted by over 1000 clients, we get results WITHOUT restrictive elimination diets.Schedule an assessment call at https://skinrepaircall.com/

256: Understanding Your Skin's Circadian Rhythm w/ Michelle Jeffries, MD
Did you know that your circadian rhythm affects your skin? Are you ready to find out what it means by your skin having its OWN circadian rhythm? If you've wondered why your skin feels different at different times of the day (super itchy at night, but fine during the day), today's guest will explain why! My guest today is Michelle Jeffries, D.O., FAAD, FAOCD. Dr. Michelle Jeffries is a board-certified Integrative Dermatologist in private practice in Phoenix, AZ and is the CEO and Founder of The SkinClock Method. She is a triple board-certified osteopathic physician in Dermatology, Pediatric Dermatology and Integrative Medicine. Her unique training and background has led her to a comprehensive "inside AND out" approach to skin health that blends the principles of holistic beauty with the natural health cycles of your body, universal laws of nature, ancient teachings, modern dermatology, functional nutrition, and spiritual consciousness for truly holistic skincare. Join us as we discuss how clock genes work in alignment with your circadian rhythm and how that can affect skin health. Have you dealt with poor sleep patterns and aligned your body's circadian rhythm to the betterment of your skin? Share with me in the comments! In this episode: What exactly is your circadian rhythm? What are clock genes? Why your skin may be actually drier at night along with more itchiness Why is it important to align your clock genes within your body with the rhythm of the world? What ancient civilizations knew that modern tech and research are discovering Thoughts on blue light blockers and red light therapry Quotes “Shift workers who actually are awake at night and asleep during the day, they actually have different rhythms that they do throughout the day. And unfortunately they're more at risk for diabetes, heart disease and cancer, psoriasis, other things. So the research has shown when you're not aligning with those rhythms, a lot of the other systems in the body get out of sync.” [7:52] “If we don't eat during active periods of the day and we're eating at night and we're eating when we're supposed to be resting, then that can just throw that whole gut clock out of lap, too. And then that will send mis-signals to the body because then the body has all these nutrients (to process).” [15:37] Links Connect with Dr. Jeffries online Follow Dr. Jeffries on Instagram | Facebook Healthy Skin Show #128: Eczema Sleep Problems w/ Christa Biegler, RD Healthy Skin Show #234: How Sleep Impacts Your Skin (Tips + Strategies) PT 1 w/ Michelle Nilan, MS, CNS Healthy Skin Show #235: How Sleep Impacts Your Skin (Tips + Strategies) PT 2 w/ Michelle Nilan, MS, CNS Healthy Skin Show #236: How Sleep Impacts Your Skin (TipsReady to figure out your skin’s root causes so you can finally fix your skin + break free from meds to manage your skin?My virtual clinic works with adults worldwide struggling with eczema, psoriasis, rosacea, urticaria, hives, dandruff, perioral dermatitis + more.Trusted by over 1000 clients, we get results WITHOUT restrictive elimination diets.Schedule an assessment call at https://skinrepaircall.com/
