When asked once what inspired her novel, The Woman in Black, Susan Hill replied that her chief ingredient was atmosphere, which I think sums it up perfectly. Some have suggested she might also have found inspiration from a little-known haunting, said to have taken place in Cheltenham back in the late 1880s.
