Quote on Embracing Uniqueness:
"The real world rewards people that are not conventionally minded, those that sort of like break from the pack and carve their own paths and create something different and legendary, right? And so somebody asked me recently, like, what's one thing that you would tell yourself, your younger self? And I was like, stop trying to fit in, right? Embrace that side of you that's different because that's the unique lens that is going to make you create wonderful things in the future, right? And not be like everybody else. And if you look at all the innovators that we admire and all the people that have quote unquote made it or that are doing wonderful things for humanity, these are all the troublemakers or the rebels or the, you know, those kids that were in school doing things a little bit differently. Why? Because it required like, in order to innovate, you have to be able to see things from a different perspective, right? In order to sort of like, yeah, go in a different direction."
Quote on Rethinking Learning Environments:
"Many times, when there's learning happening, it doesn't look like what we're used to, thinking, oh, you know, when you walk in a classroom and you see all the students quiet and, and, beautifully paying attention to the teacher and the teachers in the front and everyone's calm and you're like, wow, such a well-behaved classroom. Everyone's learning here. Congratulations. It's like, No. Most of the time, all those kids are daydreaming. They're playing the game of school, and there's not a lot of teaching and learning going on, so we need to be open to thinking, when you walk in a classroom and you see chaos and you see, things all over the place and students up and down and not at their seats and talking and moving and jumping and that's probably when they're learning, right?"

A school with 70 Choices Every Six Weeks, Every Student a Designer, with Garrett Smiley
Journey with us into the innovative world of Sora Schools. Here, every six weeks heralds a new beginning as students sift through 70 diverse subjects, deciding whether they'll dive into artificial intelligence friendships, architect their own civilizations, or plunge into the mysteries of the Roman Empire's decline. But at Sora, the power of choice doesn't end there. If none of the 70 topics resonate, students can champion their own projects, always steering their educational ship. Yet, even in this realm of freedom, challenges like student insecurities and the weight of tradition loom. Discover how Sora Schools uses technology not just as a tool, but as a bridge, connecting these unique learning experiences to traditional academic credits. And in the words of Garrett, their approach is a "quantum leap in how education works."
"The powerful moment is when they realize they are always in control of their GPA and, essentially, their grades. Because if you 'fail', if you get a zero out of four on, let's say, critical thinking — that's actually pretty hard to do — but if you get a zero out of four on critical thinking, you do it better next cycle and it's gone. It never happened."
"Students are sitting there every six weeks, they choose new learning experiences. So they're sitting there and they have 70 choices, things from building artificial intelligence to how to build your own civilization. At some level, you are there because you chose to be there. They are always in the driver's seat of their education."
"Education historically is designed the way it is because this is a very complicated thing we're all doing and we did not use to have computers to organize people and information. All the design constraints that drove that initial configuration are no longer true. So I think you just have to kind of throw it all out. It's mostly this antiquated thing, and I think we are much better suited throwing it out than trying to reform it into something relevant for the 21st century."
Key insights:
Student-Driven Learning: Traditional educational systems are set up with a fixed curriculum and structure, but Garrett emphasizes the importance of letting students choose their own learning experiences. At Sora Schools, students are presented with a multitude of choices, from building artificial intelligence to studying the fall of the Roman Empire. This not only empowers students but also ensures they are genuinely interested and invested in what they're learning.
Rethinking Efficiency in Education: Historically, the educational system has been designed for efficiency, often compared to a factory model. However, many of the constraints that shaped this system no longer apply in the modern age. With the advent of technology and more resources, the old model may be more of a hindrance than a help. Garrett suggests that instead of trying to tweak and modify it, it might be more beneficial to completely overhaul and reinvent it.
The Illusion of Permanent Failure: In many educational settings, a bad grade or failed test can seem like an insurmountable setback. However, at Sora Schools, the approach is different. If a student doesn't perform well, they have the opportunity to learn, improve, and redo their work in the next cycle. This not only provides a safety net but also instills the idea that mistakes are part of the learning process and not the end of the road.

A blueprint to kindle fires in young learners, with Kelly Smith
Join Andreas as he chats with Kelly Smith, who started Prenda Schools, about what makes small schools called microschools so special. Kelly shares his experience visiting a microschool and being inspired by a calm and firm guide (his wife) who had a unique way of connecting with her student, Noah. They dive into why this close connection between guides and students is the secret sauce of successful microschools.
Kelly and Andreas also discuss how microschools empower parents to take a more active role in their children's education, transforming feelings of being stuck into a proactive journey of creating better learning experiences.
Kelly also shares touching stories about the transformative power of patience, understanding, and a little bit of courage in the face of learning challenges. Tune in to discover the inspiring world of microschools and how they create a nurturing and effective learning environment for every child.
Quotes:
"I think a lot of parents in the past felt stuck. It was like "I'm passively receiving this thing, the best thing I can do is complain on behalf of my child." Well, now you can create on behalf of your child and other children and that shift is huge." - Kelly Smith
"Why do some microschools do so incredibly well? You go visit, you watch these people...I was at a microschool yesterday. This woman's quiet. She's not somebody you would put in front of the room and bring everybody in, but watching her one-on-one with these kids...It was like they knew where they stood. They knew how this was going to work. She didn't take a lot of nonsense from them. But at the same time, she was gentle, assertive...anyway, it's just great. And it's like she did it in her way. Others do it in their way. Connection is a deeply human thing that we need to understand a lot deeper because it's such a key to that foundation of trust that's required for eal learning to take place." - Kelly Smith
