The New McCarthyism, w/ Jodie Evans of Code Pink talking about New York Times smear campaign (G&R 245)
A few weeks ago the New York Times published a hit piece on Jodie Evans and her partner Neville Roy Singham as well as Vijay Prashad of Tricontinental and others, accusing them of organizing front groups to spread Chinese propaganda.
These are groups which are advocating No Cold War and peace with China, but to the U.S. establishment they are threats.
Bob had a great conversation w/ Jodie Evans, a co-founder of Code Pink, about the work of these groups in advocating for an end to saber-rattling w/ China and negotiations in Ukraine, and about their true relationships w/ China and others.
The NYT piece was a boilerplate Cold War smear job, the kind that the U.S. media and political class has been conducting for a century now. It's a resurgence in McCarthyism and it needs to be stopped now.

Talking Trash: The Global Garbage Crisis w/ Oliver Franklin-Wallis (G&R 243)
In much of the developed world, waste is out of sight and out of mind. The world generates around 2 billion tons of municipal solid waste annually, with at least 33% of it not managed in an environmentally safe manner, according to a 2018 World Bank report. Though high-income countries only account for 16% of the world’s population, they generate about 34% of the world’s waste each year. A third of all food produced is wasted and ends up in the garbage can. Plastic waste is another mounting issue: Across the globe, less than 10% of it is recycled, according to the most recent data from 2018 published by the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development. Plastic waste has more than doubled globally since 2000.
In our latest, we talk with journalist, and author of "Wasteland: The Dirty Truth About What We Throw Away, Where It Goes, And Why It Matters," Oliver Franklin-Wallis (@olifranklin) and take a deep dive into the global waste crisis.

Oliver Franklin-Wallis is an award-winning magazine journalist, whose writing has appeared in WIRED (where he is a contributing editor), British GQ, The Guardian, The New York Times, The Times Magazine, The Sunday Times Magazine, 1843, and many other publications. He’s also the author of "Wasteland: The Dirty Truth About What We Throw Away, Where It Goes, And Why It Matters."

Apple's diversity commitments end when asked to do the right thing w/ organizer Robby Diesu (G&R 242)
Like many corporations in Silicon Valley, Apple claims to be supportive of the LGBQT community. Even more than most as Apple's CEO Tim Cook is openly gay and the senior vice president of retail and former head of People (i.e human resources), Deirdre O’Brien, is also a member of the community. Every Pride month the company proudly claims “support” of the LGBQT community, it sells rainbow bands for Apple watches in its stores and claims to provide same-sex benefits to its employees. But as a former employee and his partner recently found out, that support only goes so far.
In the latest, Scott talks with comrade Robby Diesu (@robbythequeen) about their, and their partner's, experience with Apple while working for the company in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). They discuss how Apple revoked benefits when Robby's partner demanded the same treatment as heterosexual couples, and forced their partner out of the company.
Bio//
Robby Diesu is a long-time organizer who worked with various social movements. They currently live in Milan, Italy with their husband awaiting US immigration approval of their K1 visa.
Their husband worked for Apple for 11 years until they were forced out for asking to receive the same benefits as heterosexual couples this past year. Green and Red is withholding his name out of fear of reprisals by the company.

Journalist Will Potter on How the State and the Media Go After Radical Movements (G&R 241)
We’re in an unprecedented rollback of civil liberties. States are passing laws to outlaw protests and direct action, charging non-violent protesters with “domestic terrorism” and legalizing the running over of people blocking traffic. State surveillance of activists has increased dramatically. Police budgets are getting astronomical increases to further militarize the state. In Atlanta, in the Stop Cop City campaign, police assassinated a forest defender, Tortuguita, who had their hands up and then tried to claim self-defense.
To put this all in context, we talk with investigative journalist and author Will Potter (@will_potter). We discuss the Stop Huntington Animal Cruelty campaign, the Earth Liberation Front, the taming down of climate actions in the 2010s and how the police state ignored right wing terror groups in the same period.
We also discuss the role of the FBI and the liberal corporate media in going after radical movements, how Cop City is shifting things and where popular culture fits into the story.
Bio//
Will Potter is a thought leader and investigative journalist whose work has focused on social justice and environmental movements, and attacks on civil rights post-9/11. He’s the author of “Green Is the New Red: An Insider’s Account of a Social Movement Under Siege,” that exposed the criminalization of nonviolent protest groups by the FBI.
Currently, he’s a Distinguished Journalist in Residence and Civil Rights Fellow with the University of Denver Animal Law Program.

Stop the Mountain Valley Pipeline w/ Appalachians Against Pipelines (G&R 240)
The Mountain Valley Pipeline is a 300 mile long fracked gas pipeline cutting across the mountains and waterways of Appalachia. For the past five years, Appalachians Against Pipelines (@stopthemvp) has waged a fierce direct action campaign against it with tree-sits, blockades and civil disobedience.
Along with battles being waged in the courts and the public eye, the campaign had successfully impeded the construction of the pipeline until Joe Biden and West Virginia Sen. Joe Manchin made an agreement to fast track the pipeline's construction during the recent debt ceiling negotiations. And with a recent U.S. Supreme Court decision (with all nine justices voting to greenlight the pipeline), the pipeline is moving forward again.
In our latest episode, Scott talks with Charlie, an organizer with Appalachians Against Pipelines, about the pipeline, the politics around it and the direct action campaign resisting it.

Best of G&R: Hiroshima and "Atomic Diplomacy," 78 Years Later (G&R 239)
It's the 78th anniversary of the bombing of Hiroshima. With decisions to drop atomic bombs being discussed with the release of Christopher Nolan's "Oppenheimer," we thought we'd repost this episode from 2020.
Enjoy!
From the 2020 episode:
"For years, large majorities of Americans have believed that the U.S. had to use the A-Bomb against Japan on August 6th, 1945 to end the war quickly and avoid a land war and thus save one-million American lives.
Scott and Bob discuss the use of the bomb, why it was used as a message to the Soviet Union and not a military necessity, the chronology behind the development and deployment of atomic weapons, the U.S. public response to it, and the creation of a new history, a propaganda piece, regarding the use of the bomb. The dropping of the bomb on Hiroshima was vital in the development of the Cold War, the arms race, the military-industrial complex, and the National Security State.
Seventy-five years after the first atomic weapon was used by the U.S., it's still a highly-debated and important topic."

Noam Chomsky on 9/11 . . . Interview w/ Bob Buzzanco on 9/13/2001, from the Green & Red Archives (G&R 238)
On September 13th, 2001, G&R co-host Bob Buzzanco was fortunate to have one, if not the, first interviews w/ Noam Chomsky about the terrorist attacks of 9/11. Here the Green & Red Archives reprises that interview as an important document of the era and of Chomsky's history of dissent.

Woody Guthrie's Birthday Hootenanny, w/ Prof Mark Jackson . . . Green & Red Encore from 2022 (G&R 237)
Woody Guthrie is the most influential political singer and songwriter of the 20th Century. July 14th is Woody's 110th birthday, so we had a fantastic discussion with Mark Allan Jackson, a scholar on popular culture and music. He's author of "Prophet Singer: The Voice and Vision of Woody Guthrie" and editor of "The Honky Tonk on the Left: Progressive Thought in Country Music."
We discussed Woody's political music and activism, especially on socialism, labor, civil rights, his songs about war and peace, and his larger meaning and legacy.
