The Bottom Line: LeBron James, Gerry Cardinale and what $750m investment into FSG means for Liverpool
Welcome to a brand new show on the Blood Red podcast channel, which we’re tentatively calling ‘The Bottom Line’. Why ‘The Bottom Line’? Because this podcast is all about football finances – and Liverpool Football Club’s in particular. The Liverpool ECHO now has a dedicated business of football writer, Dave Powell, and we will be calling on him, plus special guests, to give our listeners an understanding of what’s going on off the pitch at Anfield and elsewhere. To kick us off, Paul Wheelock talks to Dave about two big stories that have emerged this week involving basketball superstar LeBron James and an investment firm called RedBird Capital Partners that is fronted by financier Gerry Cardinale. James (1%) and RedBird (10%) are buying stakes in the owners of Liverpool FC, Fenway Sports Group. So what does it mean for the Premier League champions? Dave discusses that, as well as touching on FSG’s approach to running the Reds; the impact, if any, that missing out on Champions League football will have, and what supporters can expect when the club’s latest financial accounts are released. Hope you enjoy the podcast and if there’s anything you would like us to cover on future shows, please get in touch with @_DavePowell and @PaulWheelock on Twitter.Watch and subscribe to our Blood Red videos on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/c/BloodRedLiverpoolFCJoin our Blood Red podcast group on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/groups/1656599847979758/ Learn more about your ad choices. The Academy Show: Musialowski and Gordon progress as Klopp watches on and Woodburn serves reminder of talent
Liverpool played an internal 11-vs-11 friendly match in Kirkby at weekend with Mateusz Musialowski and Kaide Gordon among the youngsters to impress. So Matt Addison joins Guy Clarke to give Reds fans the lowdown on the starlets who featured, including Billy Koumetio, James Balagizi and Tyler Morton, as well as Ben Woodburn, who hit a hat-trick and is now back at the club after his loan spell at Neil Critchley’s Blackpool ended. Also on the show is Polish Liverpool supporter Karolina Kurek, who provides the view on the highly-rated Musialowski from the 17-year-old's homeland. There is then the return of the One To Watch feature, which focuses on a striker who scored a 26-minute hat-trick as the FA Youth Cup returned, and the usual check in on how the U18s and U23s are getting on.Watch and subscribe to our Blood Red videos on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/c/BloodRedLiverpoolFCJoin our Blood Red podcast group on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/groups/1656599847979758/ Learn more about your ad choices. Blood Red: Gini to Barca, Xabi to Gladbach, and why does Salah get treated differently to Kane?
Matt Addison, Sean Bradbury and debutant Mark Wakefield join host Guy Clarke for the Blood Red podcast as they talk Gini Wijnaldum, Xabi Alonso, and Mohamed Salah and Harry Kane. A report over the weekend stated that Wijnaldum has agreed to move to Barcelona once his Liverpool contract expires in the summer. So the panel react to that news, look at the legacy the Dutch midfielder would leave behind, and look at how Jurgen Klopp would go about replacing his ‘quiet leader’. Talk then turns to Alonso, who is set to take over Borussia Monchengladbach after Marco Rose departs for Borussia Dortmund. It’s a great move for the former Reds favourite – and could it help him to one day become the manager at Anfield? The panel discuss that prospect before rounding off the podcast by examining the differing reactions to when Mohamed Salah and Harry Kane win penalties.
